@christophicus: If it was a single player game, or even a multiplayer game that could stay relatively static and still keep people, then sure. But most TCGs rely on a steady stream of expansions and new cards, and no company is going to put in the development resources for a small, dedicated fanbase for long.

@schnoo: Only 5 "ignored" (i.e. neither picked nor banned), there's 7 unpicked. Lion and Meepo have been banned but not picked.

I guess I'm stretching "actively" here, but whenever I have some real bad downtime during work, I sometimes pull up PuTTY and log in to alt.nethack.org

EDIT: I'll also pull out VVVVVV or Cave Story whenever I'm super bored.

Yes, I am going. I also know Crispy got tickets when they were on sale, but don't know if he planned on actually attending.

I'd be nice to know if anyone else is going so we could have a little duder meet-up or something.

As for advice for your question (although this thread is nearly three months old so you maybe have already found what you need), I used airbnb for housing. Was able to get a nice, full apartment with kitchen and everything for less than what a single bed hotel was asking for. Haven't checked recently, but if you're still looking give that a peek.

@helicopterspy: My understanding is that they had a few programs working in concert:

  • A Python program that reads the Twitch chat. It connects to Twitch via IRC and reads the messages.
  • The TASBot, which converts the messages, character by character, into controller inputs (which are essentially bits sent along the controller port to the SNES/Super Game Boy).
  • The chat display, which was programmed inside Pokemon Red.

The last part, the chat display, likely wasn't fully programmed when they were moving the items around in game. What they did when they were moving the items in game was program a bootloader, which essentially tells the game to load into something else rather than load into Pokemon Red. Then, once they have loaded into this new program, they have TASBot quickly input the code to create the chat display into memory and then reload to display that. While not specifically related to this particular run, the explanation for another Pokemon Yellow Total Control hack gives a much more technical overview.

As for getting the emotes into the SNES, I believe I read that they had added those sprites into the SNES internal memory, which may be why it looked like they were using their own SNES instead of a random SNES connected to the TV.

Goddamn I miss this duder. Was listening to an old This Year... Collection and it is amazing how he livens up every conversation. The jokes just seem funnier when he was around. He was an excellent emcee for the podcast, consistently finding a way to pull out the best of any conversation and finding the funny.

I remember pretty vividly how I found out, still today. I was taking a summer school class and was haphazardly paying attention to the TA in the lab, browsing Twitter. I noticed a lot of weird, somber, or melancholic messages about Ryan and mentioning his passing. I couldn't believe it and rushed to the site to see Rorie's message. I remember pretty vividly Alex tweeting that he wasn't mad or angry at the people who didn't believe it, because he honestly couldn't believe it himself when he first heard.

It fucking sucks, man.

Was considering purchasing this tonight after work. The itch of World of Warcraft is a hard one not to scratch.
