Played 2020

The yearly list of mostly chronological games played.

In order to show up on this list I should at least have played 3-4 hours of the game. Hopefully most will be completed, or at least with an indication of if i plan to complete them.

List items

  • Never played the Legend of Grimrock, but I have a softspot for turnbased strategy games.

I like that you can take one characters action, followed by moving another character/doing their action, and then jump back to the first character and finish their turn.

The writing doesn't seem too strong in this game, which makes me wish that e.g. Obsidian would do a turnbased game.

  • The game got a look, reminds me of a cyberpunk take on the Runaway adventure games by Pendulo.

I have just started it, and I am a bit unsure how the feelgrid works. The story so far seems like it might go some interesting places so I will get back to this.

  • Gave this one a spin after a big part of the gb crew liked it. I had considered buying it, but since the steam sale was over I kind of dropped the idea. I then discovered that it was on Xbox Gamepass.

Initially I was not sure I would actually like this game, but man it is a lot of fun to run around and explore, while gathering new shards.

So many shards I have not yet tried, but let's see. I have unlocked 98% of the map so far and gotten to what seems like the main boss of the game, but still haven't cleared any of the side bosses behind the different doors. I might not get through the "final" boss, who knows, maybe I figure it out at some point.

I should have known I would like this game since I also liked Dust an Elysian Tail. It was probably the Castlevania part I was not so hot on, since I never really played the games.

  • Picked it up some time back in 2019, but did not get around to actually start playing it until January.

I quite like that they use their fake Tokyo precinct Kamurocho to tell a different story in the same setting. I think I like the questioning system a lot, since it does not punish you for picking a "wrong" option, and instead rewards you for not wasting time.

The tailing is not too bad, and after figuring out that the chases are really just QTEs, and holding the direction does not work, you have to tap it to the side it shows. I'm getting better at the drone flying as well.

Currently finishing out chapter 11, the Keihin gang is getting very annoying, actually all the fighting is grinding me down. It was kind of fun to begin with, but now it is just managing the EX gauge, and doing Triangle finishers, or just 4x square 2x triangle combos. It might just be me that cannot figure out doing anything else.

The story is quite good, though I would say the Yagami the protagonist is a very lucky person in regards to getting off the hook a bunch of times. The characters are in general likeable and I had a blast, sans the repetitive fighting.

  • Will 2020 be the year I finish the last chapter in this trilogy? Maybe, at least I have started to chip away at the chapters.

And its finished! It is a damn goofy game with goofy characters, but damn if they don't grow on you.

The cases are interesting, and there are not too many moonshotish puzzles.

Overall I am glad I played it, and I am kind of interested in playing some of the other games now... Maybe they will come to PC, maybe they will come to the Switch. Who knows?

  • Got into Xcom 2 again, damn it is such a big improvement over the first game in everyway... well except for performance. The worst aspect of this game hands down is the lagging and freezing.

I will probably not complete it, but I am having a blast even if I am save scumming.

  • Comfort game for a time when you cannot decide what to play. Most maps take less than 15 minutes especially if you don't go for the pause mania that is getting a sub 10 min.

  • Bought the Elsweyr expansion during one of the steam sales, and have been enjoying doing 1 or 2 missions at a time then quitting. Would still very much like my own instances of caves, such that you dont get half way through without any enemies, and then suddenly they all respawn.

The setting is nice enough and they have some fun missions right out of the gate, loved the cat detective who i hope to meet again.

I wish they did away with the bank storage limit, and that you had a component pouch where you could have all the small stuff like spice etc.

  • I stopped playing this last year when I got to the "this is the final mission" part. Not sure the ending has a lasting impact, but it reminded me how much I hate the quicktime events, where you just die over and over again because you cannot figure out where to go.

That being said I still kind of liked the game, it has a lot of flaws but the bow shooting and stealth is still very enjoyable.

  • Gave this a spin, unfortunately it did not really catch me, only got to the hospital, and I am not sure if/when I will play this again.

  • Bought this way too long ago, only to not start on it... Then tried it out and hated the controls and bounced off it... And now after returning to it and removing the mouse acceleration, and powering through the first couple of hours, I really like this game.

The first story line with the Bloody Baron is so well told, and the tales of the Trail of Candy is so sad. Lots of interesting side quests and good characters. I have ended up sinking 73 hours into the first couple of chapters, cause I kind of have "Gotta do all the stuff" itis.

I look forward to finishing this, but I have not touched it for a bit of time, due to other stuff. Currently at Kaer Morhen, and have been told that there is not a lot of story left. Guess I feel like I got my moneys worth either way :)

  • Summer sale, and picked this up since I liked Doom 2016.

This one I am not 100% sold on, feels like they put too much stuff into a fast paced shooter. Too many skills, and forcing you to play in a specific way, ahh and skillshots, damn I suck at those, even though there seems to be auto aim that is quite generous.

The climbing on walls looks so off, and I was staring dumbly at the ice level (second or third level), until i finally spotted the climbing wall, followed by me shortly afterwards standing looking dumbly at a climbing wall I could not get to, and even though I could see the jump pad, I thought I could not reach that either... I might just have gotten too used to games showing you the way, but I clearly dont catch the hints this game is laying down.

Honestly it feels like it takes itself a bit too serious, or rather not serious at all, it feels like it is trying a bit too hard either way. It got the vibe of being too in love with it self.

I will probably get though this little by little, but it will be something like playing a level until I die once or twice and then coming back later.

  • Steam summer sale impulse buy, this game has been on my wishlist for quite some time, but somehow I only got around to pick it up now... Damn, it is an absolute blast, love the mixing of "guess the price of stuff you found in the dungeons", and the combat / exploring / rogue lite. It scratches all the right itches, though the story is a bit weak, and the interaction with other characters is extremely limited.

Put in around 21 hours, and I am kind of ready for a new game plus right away, and it prompted me to buy the DLC even though the steam reviews are mixed, cause I think I paid too little for this gem.

Ugh hated the DLC btw. and never upgrade my store to the highest tier in my original playthrough, and damn that is clearly the way to play it.

  • It has been some time since I played a Far Cry and I felt a bit of an itch, but boy if it is not a Far Cry game, just less towers. I did not complete Far Cry 4 since I started on it way to soon after having played Far Cry, and have not played primal.

I'm not really sure if I like this installment. It kind of tries to walk on a tightrope with its tone, and thus kind of fails on both being truly funny and being somewhat serious. The seriousness kind of comes across as pretentious 13 year old "deep" commentary of America.

Where it really falls flat is that the story does not matter when the gameplay loop is so transparent: Go to region, do enough stuff to be noticed, get captured, get some exposition from the bad guy of the region that makes you hate the person, miraculous get freed/escape. Repeat three times, kill the bad guy, get to the bad guys bunker and free someone, escape the bunker. No matter how much story you pile on to that skeleton, if it happens 100% like that every time, the story stops mattering. If I am meant to get captured, just do it as a part of a mission or with a cutscene, otherwise you are just wasting my time. Also damn the bad guys just suck when they keep letting you go.

The part in the loop in the in the northern region (Jacob?) is almost good since it kind of drills a set course into you. Then it kind of pulls a surprise on you in the last course, since you are more or less doing it on autopilot, and bam something happens at the end of the timed course. But they kind of warn you about it up front... And then force you to do it anyway, cause even if you have figure it out, it needs to happen in the story. I really hate it when games force you to do things like that, reminds me of the torture scene from GTA V, man that mission was not fun at all.

I'm not sure I like the skill system either, it just kind of feels wrong that the parachute, wingsuite and grappling hook is locked away by skill points. Not that skill points are hard to come by, just go do some prepper treasure hunting, or do some skill achievements. It's more that it means that the game cannot expect you to have either, so missions cannot be structured around those. The wingsuite also just feels useless, since you need a high vantagepoint to start from, and there are not as many as you might hope for. Even with some height you have a very limited range. One mission suggest that you use the wingsuite, but you can only get like half way to the next point with the wingsuite... then what is the point?

But it is not all bad, sometimes there are good missions that make you feel like you are apart of the world, and not just a Rambo plot device. One mission has you drive a man and his wife to the medical clinic in time for her delivering their baby. This is after a couple of missions for the man, with some exposition on them having the baby. And the ending of that mission is rather touching.

Then there is the random nature interaction like wild animals will attack not just you but also NPCs, it sounds awesome, and should mean that the world feels more like it doesn't just revolve around you... But then you have the wandering gun shops (hunters), which is a neat if stupid idea. Gameplay wise it is always nice to be able to change your loadout, or stock up on ammo... Except every time you encounter one of these hunters, they are immediately attacked by wildlife, rendering them 100% useless.

Currently I am at the 2. bunker, and I am not sure if I end up completing the third region (and fourth I guess), especially since it is THE bliss area. The bliss is just such a bad Deus Ex Machina/Mcguffin.

Well I ended up completing the game, and what a shitty ending, all of them actually.

  • During the summer sale this caught my eye, it seemed like it had some Persona 4/5 over it, turns out not really.

It shares a high school setting, and some of the social aspects of the Persona games, you have a crew that you get to know, learn their stories, and how they tie into the world.

Besides the crew there is a whole social graph, which is a neat idea, you meet NPCs in the world, talk to them and you can help them resolve their problems, for a reward (passive abilities). There is something like 500+ NPCs that you can help, but without a guide I don't see how you could figure all of them out. The ones that utillises the social graph are neat, but you can only take on one trauma quest at a time. Further more you often need to include the character in your party, meaning you have to drop out one of your crew members.

That being said, the main characters, and musicians, have nice storyarchs. Overdose adds a way for you to see the other side of the fights, and getting to know the enemies and their reasoning by joining the musicians for some interlude simple "ambush" missions. It is 100% what makes the game somewhat interesting, and kind of what kept me going.

The fighting system is turn-based but with a neat twist, you can see and plan into the future, so you can delay, foil attacks, or throw up a barrier to avoid attacks. I really wish they had added the ability for me to scrub through the preview battles, such that I didn't have to waste my time watching the same opening moves again and again when I am trying to line up the a third attack. I would also have loved if I could swap between ready characters, instead of having to setup their attacks separately and in the forced party order.

One thing I wish I had figured out from the start is that you talk 3 times to the NPCs to get enough info on their trauma. That and that you can farm skill points by picking up a low level NPC for your party and quick leveling them by beating some much higher level enemies.

I wish the equipment system, the stigmas, had some way of upgrading/merging, since there is a lot of trash, but you need to keep at least one of some specific stigma in order to solve some of the NPC trauma quests.

So I guess I'm rather lukewarm on the game, it was ok fun even if the battles get rather mindless, but I kind of have a weakness for that. The way the characters relate is interesting enough. My play through took 50 hours, and I don't think I will get back to playing a new game+ unlike with Persona 4/5.

  • This had been on my wishlist on and off a couple of times, and I finally bought it and gave it at try.

It's rough, the textures are not great, and the game is not very good at directing you, especially in the start.

The game also want you to pick up a companion, since you don't do a lot of damage, but all the companions kind of require you to go all over the map. Mostly you just run away form monsters and get your xp from doing quests, which is kind of fine.

The skill system is kind of weird, you have attribute points, which are only used for allowing you to use items and buying skills that you meet the requirements for.

I have put something like 10 hours into the game so far, and not sure if I get through it. I kind of want to know more about the world and the main plot, but at the same time it kind of feels like death by a thousand cuts. But at least there is no inventory limits :P

  • What a lovely game, chill, with a bit of platforming.

And some lovable, and flawed, characters.

It really kind of hit me when Gwen was sent on, and when the time came for Alice, man that hit way to close to home.

I got a bit frustrated with the game since I thought I was stuck and could not do anything, but turned out I just needed to go to one of the northern ice cites with Alice.

Somehow I think this game will stay with me... was what I thought at that point, now not so sure, some of the later characters are just abusive :( Though some of them get a bit past it after some quests, except for the damn teacher.

Anyway i like the game, though there kind of was little substance after the point I got to. Somehow I think the game would have been better if it was not so many fetch quests.

    Still enjoyed the game though.

  • Finally landed on steam, and got a bit of a discount as well, so jumped in since the GB crew seemed to like it.

It's neat, the combat is a bit challenging at times, and when you get the pull/push telekinesis that is the main weapon except for against a couple of enemies.

The story is a bit shallow, but the characters are neat, and a lot of the collectibles are neat, especially the Darling videos, along with some of the audio clips, and the references to other Remedy games.

I have currently "completed" the game, got the first real credits, but still got the DLC that comes with the ultimate edition to do.

Oh and the ashtray maze was a nice sequence.

  • A friend recommended me this, so picked it up. So far it is ok, though I had some graphics glitches/performance issues.

I have some theories already and if it its branching is like 999, then I guess I might be right for some subset of playthrough , but it is going to be interesting to see the story unfold.

Ok so finished this, took ~24 hours, I quite liked it, and the branching story telling is neat, and just like 999, not really any way to fail the game, except for some quick time events, but not a lot of them.

I think I got that song stuck in my head though... even if the song is kind of out of key and the lyrics are not fitting the song, still catchy though.

  • Saw Abby play this, and though hmm this is probably "up my stardew valley". So bought it on a sale at some point, just did not have the time to start on it, until now.

I kept getting impressed with what the devs had managed to cram into a game that on the surface seems quite shallow. And yes it kind of is, but the crafting keeps going for longer that I thought it would, and the story missions kind of keeps expanding, though where I am now I guess is kind of the last expansion on the map.

There are some annoying bugs, where for some reason the game will prompt you to agree to plays/dates that you cannot actually attend due to in-game events going on. That is extremely annoying, but you can luckily just decline missions, and accept them after the in-game events.

Currently in year 2, autumn, and I might have lost the interest by now... Will probably still jump in from time to time, if not for anything else but to see how far the main story goes.

Some of the mechanics in the game feels a bit thin, and I guess that might be due to them being added as Kickstarter goals, since this is a kickstarted game. Well I still jumped in on their next Kickstarter for the My time at Sandrock, so hopefully they nail even more stuff in the game.

  • Quaint little adventure/walking simulator. Sluggish controls, and limited manoeuvrability, but still a bit interesting. Got to a bit with a raft and that just seemed like an extremely badly made part of the game, that should probably just have been 1/4th as long, and made easier to control. In general every time the game kind of wants to kill you is just infuriating.

No idea how long the game is, but will have to see if I get through it or if I lose interest.

  • Ahh supergiant, what a neat run based game you have created here. The art, the music and the characters are superb as expected, and the gameplay loop is neat enough. I have played for 17hours and that brings me to ~31 runs, got the the second phase of the boss on the surface...

I am down to playing a run at a time, and close down the game, cause the runs end up being around an hour or so, and defeat is always somewhat bitter.

  • On the last couple of days of 2020 I took a dive into Tetris Effect. Its Tetris, but with music made by you dropping the pieces. Quite neat, already bought the soundtrack before buying the game so it has been a joy experiencing the pieces I enjoyed showing up during my play through.
