Fear Gauntlet: Lights On. Reflections on Resident Evil 1

Steve and I are done playing Resident Evil 1. We have vanquished our fear! This game can't scare us! And so, as we emerge from the darkness of the recording room and into the light of an empty office, Steve and I take some time out to reflect on playing Resident Evil 1 for the first time.

Just a quick correction to the video; though we indicate otherwise in this recording, the game we are actually playing next is F,E,A,R 1! Not Condemned 1 (that comes later.) Stay tuned this weekend for new episodes!

RE is a very influential game and definitely deserves its place in the annuls of gaming history.

That being said, controls have changed alot since this game came out so going back can be jarring.

Also, I think you can effectively give players a "helpless" feeling by limiting ammo or pitting them against numerous enemies or something to that effect. Struggling with controls to do something that the character should be able to do easily is not scary, it's frustrating, and if the intention is to immerse me in this horror envirnoment nothing will take me out faster than awkward controls.

Off topic, but I was wondering when you guys would get to Condemned. The only game I've ever played that really scared me. I would begin each level standing still for a few minutes, not wanting to move the character forward because I knew that there were crazy hobos waiting to bludgeon me as soon as I did. I still have never finished it.
