Awful videogame character design: Looking for examples

Being someone who draws and paints for a living, I have a lot of interest in art in videogames, from background assets to weapon designs and character designs. Aesthetic pleasure is a major reason why I replay Uncharted 2 from time to time. The deliciously-detailed and impressively-designed backgrounds are like porn to me.

Most of the games I enjoy tend to have what I consider to be fantastic character designs, like Team Fortress 2 and  Odin Sphere. Team Fortress 2 succeeds in giving each playable character class a distinct silhoutte and just the right amount of detail to help players understand immediately what each class does. The cartoony aesthetics help to reinforce the idea that despite the violence, the world of TF2 is one that lives in the realm of humor and silly fun. As for Odin Sphere, aside from the gorgeous painterly 2D graphics, each character is unique in design, loaded with detail and every playable character has his/her own distinct color scheme that suits their personalities.

I also have a kind of a morbid fascination with terrible art, and that includes pig disgusting videogame character designs. What I mean by 'pig disgusting' is unintentional ugliness, or a failure to express what the character's supposed to be. Well-designed monsters are meant to be ugly or disgusting, but a badly-designed monster looks like something little children could have scrawled, with little care for aesthetic sense. Games like Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust is home for many terrifying examples of supposedly attractive characters that look like the stuff of nightmares.

There are also cases where the character design is bad in the context of gameplay. Example: Brown characters in a brown background under a brown sky. While it may make sense for a military-themed videogame to have characters wearing camouflage to match the colors of the environment, if you're playing a game in third-person and your character as well as other characters look almost exactly alike with little difference in silhoutte shape it can get pretty confusing.

I'd like you to share with me: What game(s) do you personally think have terrible character designs, and is there a reason why you consider them to be awful?

@Grumbel:   They stopped using her Prime 1 look because her appearance in Zero Mission became her canonical appearance.  Up until then, Samus never had a consistent look when she was out of her power suit.  However, she has always had long hair, save for flashback scenes in games like Zero Mission and Other M.  That being said, yeah, her Zero Suit appearance in Prime 2 is not particularly well modeled.  Other than that, I don't have an issue with the way she looks.

If the best defense you can come up with for a middling character design is making fun of another style of bad design, you really don't have a case.

I just find it odd criticising a character designed to be a blank slate for being a blank slate.

Except he's not a blank slate. Belt guy with Amnesia is a blank slate. Sheperd has a history and a personality, and looks boring. Now I get what you're saying. Boring is better than distinctively bad. But its not a "this or that" situation. They can make decent looking characters and choose to make the lead boring by default.

He has a history and personality but you're meant to change him and give him a new look. He works well as box art as a default handsome male but they put all those character creation tools in there for a reason.

Well this wasn't a question about "only mention designs set in stone". Nobody said everything possible to make in the character maker looks like shit.  I made Hally Berry for my Shepperd.

By the way, everything possible to make in Oblivion looks like shit.

@HandsomeDead: Yes you can do that, but the default male shepard is the poster boy for Mass Effect. When you see that character you know it's Mass Effect just like when you see Mario you know its a Mario game. Just because you can choose not to play as him doesn't make his design any less bad.

I mean his costume - it looks like it's trying to give him a beer gut. also the mask he wears later looks kind of ridiculous on him. personally I don't like how ugly he looks but I don't think that's an example of bad character design.

Eh, the shoulder guard looks stupid, but the ''beer gut''he has is actually not that uncommon an armour acessory especially with the Samurai.

He gets cool points from me in the first place for being in a JRPG and having at least minimal pubic hair growth.

he looks like he should probably be wearing more armour to me; full or at least full-er samurai gear would probably look a lot better.

I disagree with most of the answers in this thread. This is mostly just personal preference and opinion, not bad character design, I think. There are some real stinkers in here, but for the audience of enjoy those games the most ( and even me, who I'm not a big fan of some of these games ) would love them,  just because you don't doesn't mean that the character design is bad.  Infamous guy looks amazing to me. They made a superhero out of a guy in a track jacket with a bookbag on.

Also, some of you guys seem to be attacking the fact that some of the  females in the games have sexual appearances. The males in these games have exaggerated appearances as well ( huge muscles, long legs sometimes, etc ).  It's a videogame,  I think they were trying to create super men and super women, and just like characters such as Ryu and Ken are depicted as handsome, strong with exaggerated features,  Chun Li is as well.

Also, we don't know if the president just made himself look like the new Dante, or the new Dante was made to look like him. So don't make assumptions. He might have just been pumped for the new character so he got a haircut, and also,  I'm sure Capcom would not have let that particular thing happen with their multi-million dollar product.

Well, then don't use an @ tag.
That implies you're talking to a single person.

And most people would consider things bad if they hate them, yes.
I'm sure there are people that like Tidus' design, that doesn't mean it isn't bad.
I'm sure there are tons of people that like Ryu's design, that doesn't make it good.

However, if enough people are of a certain opinion, it is likely that opinion is closer to truth.

The people pointing to the Final Fantasy X designs (or any Nomura designs, really) as awful are woefully misinformed. Modern Final Fantasy games are some of the few games that wholly create worlds and integrate their characters into them, while maintaining basic design rules and, for the most part, creating aesthetically appealing character structures. Many whine about the impracticality or "over-design" of the Nomura clothing, but for the series and individual characters, they fit. Some of Nomura's clothing designs hew closer to high-fashion art pieces that look wacky, but most are just re-coded visualizations of modern fashions and they really fit in the worlds that the characters inhabit.

Take a walk outside and look at what people are fucking wearing: a pastiche of corporate logos, random textures and mismatched jewelry.  All that crap that adorns a person's frame tells a story about the world they live in. The Nomura designs are no different. Let's take the Tidus and/or FFX designs for example:

Tidus

Clothing

  • Modified wetsuit/waders including detachable lengths; fully in synthetic fabrics; utilitarian boots; coral motif armour

Basically, by design, his clothes tell us that he is heavily involved in water activity. The removable sections infer a utilitarian necessity for free movement/and or possible loss of equipment, while the present general lack of clothing infers a hot climate. The sythnetics are water-shedding materials and the coral motifs all suggest some sort of affiliation to a water-based culture or cultural event. The light armour signifies some sort of physical conflict...IE--- This character is an underwater combat sports player from a hot climate.

Accessories/Logos

  •  Emblazoned with religious/sport (depending on time period) based logos; various chains, earrings, jewelry; dyed hair

Final Fantasy characters (unlike most game characters) actually live in the worlds that are created for them. They accessorize and wear trinkets and sport logos for the overriding cultural norms of the places they come from. The Yu Yevon symbol is front and center in Tidus' time (as a sporting logo) and in Yuna's time (as a religious symbol) and subtly informs the player about the principle beliefs of each culture. In Tidus' time, people wore the logos much like anyone you'd see walking down the street wearing their favourite football logo. In Yuna's time, the people co-opted the myths and icons of the past to become religious symbols just like any religion you'd find today. It was a hilarious underlying theme of FFX that most people don't catch.
As for the jewelry and hair, this is just the basic stuff of youth, especially in Japan. Tidus is a foil to Auron's old man stodginess and his youthfulness is accentuated by his teenager hair. Which brings us to...

Design Principles

  •  Sunny colours, middling frame, asymmetrical design

The FFX characters operate on classic design templates/visual shortcuts that instantly tell you something about the characters by their colour.
  1. Tidus - Yellow - Sunny, Positive, Happy
  2. Yuna - White - Pure, Chaste, Holy/Religious
  3. Auron - Red - Powerful, Courageous, Rebellious
  4. Wakka - Orange - Wacky, Funny, Upbeat
  5. Kimahri - Blue/Gray - Cold, Resistant, Sadness
  6. Lulu - Black - Mysterious, Strong, Reserved
  7. Rikku - Green/Brown - Youthful, Earthy, Grounded (in the sense of the Al Bhed utilizing science and logic instead of faith- and magic-based approaches)

His slighter, more streamlined frame allows Tidus to be more easily identified by silhouette from the stockier Wakka and more stoic Auron. Additionally, it suggest speed and agility over power which fits nicely with his Thief/Squire/Ninja job status. Finally, asymmetry creates visual interest...it's a hallmark of good design for active models.

A lot of the dissent to his design is pretty unfounded. The Final Fantasy worlds are not our world; their cultures are created whole-cloth in every instance rather than being pulled from fantasy tropes based on Medieval structures or sci-fi tropes based on NASA utilitarianism, and as such, look wildly different from what you'd see outside your window. But interestingly enough, all of the excessive "trinketing", "patterning", and "layering/segmenting" that people malign on the designs exists heavily in the clothes that we wear...just in a more familial fashion.

If you don't like it, that's cool, but please don't spout how it's 'bad design,' it makes you look uninformed.

In addition to Meg Ryan here, pretty much anyone from Final Fantasy is a perfect example of bad design.
