Awful videogame character design: Looking for examples

Being someone who draws and paints for a living, I have a lot of interest in art in videogames, from background assets to weapon designs and character designs. Aesthetic pleasure is a major reason why I replay Uncharted 2 from time to time. The deliciously-detailed and impressively-designed backgrounds are like porn to me.

Most of the games I enjoy tend to have what I consider to be fantastic character designs, like Team Fortress 2 and  Odin Sphere. Team Fortress 2 succeeds in giving each playable character class a distinct silhoutte and just the right amount of detail to help players understand immediately what each class does. The cartoony aesthetics help to reinforce the idea that despite the violence, the world of TF2 is one that lives in the realm of humor and silly fun. As for Odin Sphere, aside from the gorgeous painterly 2D graphics, each character is unique in design, loaded with detail and every playable character has his/her own distinct color scheme that suits their personalities.

I also have a kind of a morbid fascination with terrible art, and that includes pig disgusting videogame character designs. What I mean by 'pig disgusting' is unintentional ugliness, or a failure to express what the character's supposed to be. Well-designed monsters are meant to be ugly or disgusting, but a badly-designed monster looks like something little children could have scrawled, with little care for aesthetic sense. Games like Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust is home for many terrifying examples of supposedly attractive characters that look like the stuff of nightmares.

There are also cases where the character design is bad in the context of gameplay. Example: Brown characters in a brown background under a brown sky. While it may make sense for a military-themed videogame to have characters wearing camouflage to match the colors of the environment, if you're playing a game in third-person and your character as well as other characters look almost exactly alike with little difference in silhoutte shape it can get pretty confusing.

I'd like you to share with me: What game(s) do you personally think have terrible character designs, and is there a reason why you consider them to be awful?

@FritzDude: I don't know who came up with that design, but I want to punch them in the face.  There is nothing even remotely close to that "thing" in the book.

" This thread basically exists so that people can criticize baroque artistic style.  Because that's what all these intricately designed Japanese characters are based on.  Baroque became extremely popular in Japan, and still is.  This topic has turned less into examples of bad character design and more into an argument over stylistic choice. As someone who likes a wide array of styles, all in their proper place, I would be extremely upset if the design on the robot suit, the environment and the robot enemies in Vanquish was changed to make it more closer to Red Dead Redemption.  It would be a real bummer if Mario's identifiable round shapes were changed to harder lines, a la 90s Marvel work.  Interestingly enough, the two series most lambasted for baroque art moved to that style after spending most of their early period with romantic stylized concept art and gothic and fantasy assets. @ZanzibarBreeze:  Final fantasy VIII characters were fine. The rest  aren't nice with the exception of Balthier and Penelo in FF XII. For the time being, I'd have to go with Zidane, Blurrrgph.

@Meteora: Thank you I was wondering when this was going to pop up or if it was going to show at all. Now this is ridiculous design, any of Epic human design for that matter.

@garbagewrappedinskin: Well said, either he is blind or just slow.

@Pinworm45: Sigh, someone didn't play the game. There is a reason for this design, character design isn't only about the look but the story behind it.

@Buzzkill: Agree, again Epic needs a new character design philosophy.

I'm baffled as to how i've "assaulted" you by responding to your claim. Your response was glib because it glossed over the meaning of my explanation and simply focused on a common trope for Final Fantasy designs. Your response had "superficial plausibility", and that's not an insult either, if that's what you meant to say.

And this may blow your mind, but...zippered shoes:

They're actually really nifty and make it so that your laces never come undone. But that's really beside the point. I was "picking and choosing" Final Fantasy X because it has gotten the most criticism in this thread, specifically, Tidus. When most dudes say that they hate "Final Fantasy" designs, they generally mean that they hate Nomura (FF6,7,8,10,11,13) designs, with a dash of Yoshida (FF 12, 14, Tactics, Vagrant Story). Basically, the "belts and zippers" look. The zippers thing has always bugged me, as most of the mainline FF designs lack superfluous zippers (save the one on Sleipnir's ass in FF13). The man does love his straps and buckles though. Call it a trademark.

I'm not going to defend this shit to the ends of the earth; there are some that i like and some that i don't. I find them to be consistently high quality in the same way that i can look at top end fashion designers and appreciate their work too.  Stuff that is fit for the runway is not practical for heading to the office (or even the club) but it is visually interesting. Most of the numbered FF designs have practicality to some extent (with exceptions) but are mainly meant to be dazzling.

"
I think more of the issue is Tidus('s?) asymmetrical pants. I've never seen this in fashion, nor does it serve a utility function. A little assymetry is okay, but Nomura makes it so obviously 'Hey I'm going to make this character as assymetrical as possible'. If you wanted to talk about popular fashion in Japan, The World Ends With You is much more accurate depiction of Japanese fashion than any Final Fantasy character.

Also, as you mentioned laces, that's partially my point. Sora's shoes consist of no laces, they are magically held together with the most durable zipper on the planet. Why even bother making them zippered, why not just have them be slip-ons by that logic? Also Donald's hat has zippers, what is the function of a hat having zippers other than to make it even more unnecessarily heavy?

Look, Tidus is just a big fan of LL Cool J.

The World Ends With You was completely designed by Nomura, characters and all.

What are you talking about?...there are clearly two wide straps across Sora's shoes over top of the zippers. Also, you complaints about Donald's hat being too heavy...you do realize that you are talking about a talking duck whose ass end changes to an octopus when he goes in water. A TALKING DUCK THAT TURNS INTO A HALF OCTOPUS IN WATER.

Chris from RE5 looked ridiculous. i played through the entire thing and stopped every couple minutes just to gawk at how horrible and stupid looking he was. His african lady partner wasn't much better either (sorry i can't recall her name). well that entire game sorta was horrible.

and yeah, final fantasy in general has by far the worst looking characters ever. FFX wins by far though, tidus, wakka, that seymor guy

This is exactly what I never understand, but I guess people who like Dante's original awful design got upset that he was changed to something more realistic after Dante's been in 4 fucking games.Like seriously there is nothing good or original about Dante's old look just another Final Fantasy reject who found his own game.
