Games I'm looking Forward to in 2014

Here's my shitty list of games I'm excited for this year.

List items

  • At this point in time there is very little we actually know about Persona 5. Even so, there's really no way I couldn't have made this my number one. Every since playing P3P back in 2010, the Persona series has had a huge impact on my taste in gaming. I bought a PS2 just to play P4 and have followed every drop of news pertaining to its sequel for over three years. And now, finally, the hour is at hand. P5 will be out this year. It will be on PS3. I will play it.

  • Arc System Works is going to make me their bitch. With three major games on the horizon, it's looking like they've almost single-handedly guaranteed that this'll be a great year for fighting games. BlazBlue and Persona aside, however, neither of those releases have received quite the amount of hype as the return of motherfucking Guilty Gear. There is a plethora of reasons why I'm excited for this game, but it's getting late and I really don't feel like listing them out for the like three people who will ever see this list. Like with Freedom Wars, your best bet with this one is to just watch the trailer.

  • ULTRA. SUPLEX. HOLD.

  • Hey look! It's Fanservice: The Game! Seriously, Persona Q looks like a pretty fun dungeon-crawler featuring characters from Persona 3 & 4. That's enough to earn it a decent spot on my list.

  • I've never played a Strider game. Not because I don't want to, but because the games still haven't received proper digital releases on current-gen consoles (to my knowledge). Regardless, the new Strider looks fucking radical. A metroid-style action game with ninjas and robots? Sure, I'm down.

  • I'm not huge on hunting games like Monster Hunter or the God Eater series, but Freedom Wars looks to be putting enough of a spin on the genre to get me interested. Using crazy Spider-man powers to cover distance fast and lock-down you enemy looks awesome, and the combat itself doesn't look half bad either. Freedom Wars is a hard one for me to describe beyond that, so do yourself a favour and go check out the trailer.

  • The BlazBlue series is fast, frantic, and stylish as all fuck. I kind of passed on the last couple of entries but Chrono Phantasma seems like a definite step-up from its predecessors. Rebalancing, a continuation of the story, and a butt-ton of new characters will be featured in this new version, and I can't wait to pick it up.

  • One of the weirder entries because I've already has a chance to play a chunk of it. The Walking Dead was my GOTY in 2012, and if Episode One is any indication, Season Two will continue to deliver that quality of story telling and then some.

  • This won't be the last Persona game you see on this list. Well, it might be depending on which way you chose to read it. Regardless; I'm not a rhythm game kind of guy, but the catchy music of the Persona series combined with the characters I love are sure to pull me in on this one. Also the announcer in that trailer was pretty great.

  • A Bird Story is the follow-up to 2011's To The Moon, which I liked a whole lot. This new game will supposedly tell its own story as well as set-up the plot for To The Moon 2. The only thing holding this one back is that it's not actually confirmed for a release this year yet. Fingers crossed!

  • There's not much to say about this one. I like Smash Brothers and am very eager to get my grimy mitts on the 3DS version when it's released later this year. If I'm being honest, the only reason this isn't higher on the list is because I won't have a Wii U to play the console version on. And that's kind of a bummer.

  • I watched a first few episodes of the Dangan Ronpa anime a while back and dropped it as soon as I heard this game was getting a western release. The core concept sounds exciting but the anime was clearly rushed for time and had to gloss over a lot of details in order to fit the story into a mere 12 episodes. This month, however, I'll get a chance to experience the plot in its original form on the Vita. I'm pretty stoked.

  • It's easy to take one look at Dengeki Bunko and its cast of characters and immediately dismiss it as a bunch of cutesy anime girl bullshit. You might be right in doing that, or you might be wrong. That's up to interpretation, I guess. However, the fighting prowess of developer French-Bread combined with the ridiculous crossover potential of Dengeki Bunko and Sega is nothing to scoff at. It nothing else, I'll be able to play as Shizuo Heiwajima and chuck trash cans at Kirino for an entire match.
