Bad Marketing

Games and consoles which were poorly marketed to the public, usually with disastrous results.

Please keep in mind that just because something had poor marketing techniques, doesn't necessarily mean that it's a bad game or console.

List items

  • Heavy pricing and troublesome hardware meant that the PS3 struggled for the first few years on the market. It began to pick up steam towards the end of its life cycle when Uncharted 2 / 3 and The Last of Us released.

  • Kinect? Always online? Strict DRM regulations? No game sharing? Xbox One didn't really stand a chance thanks to some of the worst marketing for a console I've seen in my lifetime.

This TV-centric approach to Xbox almost killed the brand off entirely, but Phil Spencer came to pick up the pieces and salvaged what was left with promising results for the future.

  • Demonstrated at E3 2007 as a "gone rogue" story with Sam Fisher on the run in the style of Jason Bourne. Not much stealth on display but plenty of fist fights and action, which led to the game being critically derided for losing too much of what made the previous Splinter Cell games work in the past.

After a few years, Conviction was released and refined to more stealth-focused gameplay, but there are still moments in which the game requires you to get into shoot outs quite often.

  • Used heavy marketing tactics in an attempt to rival GTA and failed to reach expectations set by E3 gameplay reels.

  • The trailer for this game is just obnoxiously irritating.

  • Sean Murray spoke too much.

  • When I first saw the trailer for this game live at Gamescom, I had a hard time believing that it was a Saints Row game until the title card appeared at the end. And with all the goodwill built up with the evolving graffiti wall from Volition's social media, it's a wonder people felt let down in the end.
