PAX East 2010

On Saturday, I got to hit the expo floor first thing in the morning. I was apparently mistaken. I thought Max Payne 3, Metroid: Other M, Super Meat Boy and Natal would be there, but they were not. Crackdown 2 was there, but it was just the multiplayer (team deathmatch), so I skipped over it. I'm way more excited to play co-op than multiplayer. I did get a chance to check out Breach and Monday Night Combat. Both coming to XBLA this summer, I believe. Monday Night Combat is a bit like Team Fortress 2, mixed with DOTA and looks promising. Breach still has a way to go in terms of the way it controls, but it's graphically impressive and the destructibility of the environments is paralleled only by Bad Company 2. I also got a half-hour to check out Mafia II. It's better than the Godfather games, but not on par with the Grand Theft Auto series yet. I can confirm that there are issues of Playboy scattered about, and yes, they feel extremely out of place. The driving, however, is just the way I like it.
I got to attend the following panels on Saturday:
- Kotaku and Croal: In Search of the Best Games Ever
- Hal Halpin and Adam Sessler Talking Games
- Get Ready for Love: The Joystiq Podcast Live!
On Sunday, I got to check out Red Dead Redemption (and got a shirt and poster!). The game controls very similar to GTA IV, with the addition of "Dead Aim", a variation on bullet time. I got to ride around on the horse for a bit and play through the demo mission that was available. If this game wasn't on my radar before, it certainly is now. I also got to meet Arthur Gies (Rebel FM, IGN) and Ryan Scott (Geekbox, Gamespy) and had a word with Gerstmann.
I attended the following panels on Sunday.
- X-Play Live with Adam Sessler & Morgan Webb
- Sequelitis Snake Oil with Gerstmann, Grant, Levine, Avellone, Teasdale
- Closing Ceremony (the final Omegathon round was pretty epic)
This was my first video game convention and I had a great time at PAX East 2010. I could think of a better way to spend my birthday weekend. I'm glad that they're moving it to a bigger location next year and I'll definitely be picking up tickets for PAX East 2011. Hopefully they'll be on sale next month again.
Now back to Mass Effect 2!
