Or maybe it's because Abby doesn't seem to think things through before she says them. She just says things that often don't make sense (or contradicts herself) and then as soon as anyone gives her the tiniest push back, like Vinny did this time, she quickly goes into "I don't want to talk about it" mode. If she actually believes what she said then she needs to clarify and defend her point. She deserves to have her point questioned because her complaints don't hold any water. She can't even argue her own stance. She doesn't even know the troupe she's trying to say the game is guilty of! It has nothing to do with her being a woman. It has everything to do with her just saying stuff without thinking it through or arguing something with wrong information (i.e. the Valkyries being corrupted).
1) the staff says flippant stuff all the time (and to be clear, i don't think abby was being flippant). jeff FREQUENTLY calls good video games bad because they aren't to his taste, and dan (though i love him) is 'talk-before-you-think' incarnate. and yet these things don't stick to jeff and dan, whereas people are still invoking last year's goty discussions as if they're waiting for a Truth and Reconciliation Tribunal to confer.
2) you're approaching this as if abby needs to persuade you personally of how she feels about something. the only people she needs to convince are the people in that room (sorry), and even if her arguments were 100% appeal to emotion (which i don't think they are), that's good enough, because games live or die in these discussions based purely on the merit of what-they-meant-to-the-staff irrespective of logical consistency.
but no, let's have a referendum on brief negative comments she made (that have now somehow completely overshadowed the time she spent praising the game).
To your first point, yeah, I agree with you on Jeff and Dan, however that doesn't change my points with Abby. Just because two other people have done similar things, that doesn't give her a pass either. And I don't know where you've been, but Dan was a long-time punching bag (and sometimes still is) in this community, but he took the criticisms to heart. Whereas with Abby it seems like she, and others in the community, want to say it's because she's a woman.
To your second, yeah, you're right, she doesn't necessarily need to persuade me since I'm not part of the GB staff, but when someone is going out of their way to attack something and either imply or explicitly state that it's treating women badly, but not willing to offer any real explanation or justification for that those comments, then yes, that person absolutely should be asked to justify those statements. To be clear, I don't care about GOW. I'm not here to fight for GOW. I'm here to just say that Abby is just as bad as when Dan or Jeff are flippant about something, and that's why people get annoyed at her.
I never said anything about her comments being emotional. She only got emotional when Vinny, very politely, challenged them and then her response is "I don't fucking care." Well then don't bring them up. You clearly cared enough, so you should back them up. And just because they don't have to appeal to us, that doesn't mean someone shouldn't be held to the fire for being logically inconsistent, or for saying something is treating women badly without evidence. Dan has, without a doubt, gotten it the worst from this community, but he learned from it. People play the misogyny card anytime someone critiques Abby in any way.
Lastly, the reason her comments are overshadowing things is because of the way she handled the whole conversation by just saying "this games treats women badly. I don't have to explain myself and if anyone challenges me, I'll just say that I don't care and move on to something else." Obviously I'm editorializing, but that's how it came off to many people.
Abby was right and the insane pushback she always gets from aggrieved nerds is emblematic of how much growth this industry still has left to do.
Name-calling because you can't refute any of the arguments? Very mature. No wonder no one takes any of these complaints seriously. You're incapable of defending your position, so it's easier to just call everyone who disagrees with you a nerd. Pretty childish.
Man, what is it with people going to 11 every time Abby criticises a game.
it's almost as if certain members of the staff are inexplicably held to a different standard. /s
real talk- if any other member of the staff had mentioned they had a problem with the female characters, it might have gotten a few pings in the comments. but here we are about 200 entries later. thank god the video game defense force activated to shield us from a fleeting opinion.

@eternalgamer2: If you don't like your life, maybe make a change instead of yelling at people who have worked their asses off to be successful. And just because they're successful and doing a job that you think you'd love and never complain about, that doesn't mean it doesn't take a toll in ways you may not understand. You just sound bitter.
Agreed. Or just put timestamps in there so I can skip over them. Sometimes they have good conversations about stuff while playing other games, but mostly with fighting games they just talk about the fighting game; that or Jason crosstalks over the other conversation to make noises or sing a song, which is just as annoying as sitting through the fighting games.
Jesus shut up, ECHO is more interesting than Batman or Terminator.
Maybe. But maybe this was also not a good setting to play this game. I actually like ECHO, but Vinny should have moved on once his save didn't come over. Maybe calm down a little?
