My Back to the Future Timeline Design

Yo Bombers!

This is something I've been wanting to make for a long time now. Back to the Future is one of my favorite films of all time. Yes, I know that a lot of people have made these already, but I wanted to make one with the different timelines and descriptions for each one plus a neat design!  ;)

Doc explains in the movies that whenever a person time travels to the past and alters key-events, he deletes his timeline and a new timeline is created.

Ripple effect explanation: Whenever a person travels back in time and changes things in the past, things and people in the future may change. Because of this, the people in the future are sent to the new timeline that the person travelling back in time created.

If you're interested, this is available as a Print. :)

If I've made any spelling and/or grammatical errors, please tell me!

Wow, that's really neat, good job.

The only thing that really confused me about the series when I watched it was how Future Marty was in 2015 when Present Marty left 1985 to go to 2015 (wouldn't he have been missing the whole time etc., and newly created timelines hurt my head).

Dude nice. I played through episode two of the BTTF game yesterday and was trying to find a way to visualize a chart of the alternate timelines. I think we can all agree the crappy one Doc drew in the movies could use some modern power-pointery.

Events from later timelines do not make their way backward into the previous timelines, so that's why there was a Future Marty in 2015. This is also why there aren't two Marty's at the Twin Pines Mall in Timeline 1.

What happens to the characters in the previous timelines after they have left and made new timelines? I mean those timelines still exist in their own parallel universes, don't they?

Like, does Marty's family from timeline 1 eventually register him as a missing person? Or does the ripple effect "overwrite" the original timelines?

@MrKlorox: Whenever someone travels to the past and alters anything (which is bound to happen), the previous timeline ends and a new one is created. So therefore, there isn't a George McFly in 1985 in timeline 1 searching for his lost son.

This is awesome.

I bought the trilogy on Blu-Ray recently, and one of the special features is the filmmakers answering questions about how the timeline is laid out. Some people get confused by it, but the way they explain everything makes it seem pretty simple.

This is where it all falls apart for me. How can there still be a Delorean in the games if they take place after the movies without individual universe permanence. I mean, yes they haven't released all of the episodes yet, but I still can't figure out how there's still that same Delorean at the beginning of Episode 1 after it gets destroyed at the end of Part 3. I'm sure Telltale has an incredibly twisty story ready, but unless Doc did something with the machine before he tested it with Marty in the parking lot, alternate universe permanence is the only solution I can think of.

edit: I guess there was some time in between the end of his adventures in Part 1 during the few "seconds" Doc is in the future for something to happen, come to think of it. The Delorean runs on garbage and can fly in the game after all. Other than that the audience pretty much knows whats happening with the machine the entire time.

Ah, that is kinda weird. Hm, now you've got me thinking. Where does Marty find the De Lorean in the game? That could make things a little easier.

@Twilight:  It shows up outside Doc's place with Einstein inside it (something about an automatic failsafe) along with a tape recorder and a shoe right after the second scene in 1985. Or is it 86 by then...?

They were offering Episode 1 free on the telltale site if you used the coupon code 121GIGAWATTS some time back. Not sure if that's still going on though. Either way it's totally worth the $25 bones for the season, judging by the first two episodes. I'm totally hooked on the story now.

Ah, that's right, I remember that from the Quick Look! That's kinda weird though, cause as far as I remember, there isn't a De Lorean in 1985 at the end of trilogy cause doesn't it get crushed at the end of BTTF III? I can't think of a way there would be another De Lorean in 1985 in that timeline. Man, this is too damn complicated. I can't think anymore!

Yea I don't think those coupon codes work anymore. Thanks for the suggestion though. I'm definitely gonna buy it soon. I've just not had a lot of time recently to play games.

@Twilight:  Since Marty wakes up after reliving the parking lot scene, it makes me wonder if Telltale is using the premise of a dream to rewrite the physics of the fiction. I mean quantum physics theories haven't exactly been stagnant over the past 25 years.

And man Quantum Leap would be a cool game if done right.

got one thing wrong, Doc doesn't stay in 1885 - he travels forward to 1985 in his "train-machiene" to show Marty and Jennifer he and Clara are okay and that they have kids, also gives him a photo as a "souvenir"

@MrKlorox:  Doc may have used the DeLorean from the past before it was destroyed. He has the time traveling train that he could have used to snag it at some point, or maybe even make a copy of it. We will have to wait and see how telltale explains it.

@Lego_My_Eggo:  Oh that's right. It was sitting in that cave for a hundred years. I guess as long as its returned at the end of the game, it could make sense that he borrowed it. But what about Einstein? He didn't make it to 1885 in the movies and Marty doesn't take care of him. Ah crap, too many open questions.

But like you said, Telltale will just have to explain it over time. All I know is that I can't wait for episode 3 to come out.

When Doc was struck by lightning in 1955, it sent him 70 years into the past to 1985. But it also created a duplicate DeLorean, sending it 70 years into the future to 2025. On one of his trips to the future, he came across and recovered the duplicate DeLorean. He probably had to replace the flying circuits, but since he was in the future anyway that probably wasn't a problem. He also added the automatic retrieval feature, allowing the DeLorean to return to 1986 to get Marty's help if Doc ended up in trouble.

Why was a duplicate DeLorean created? Well, he couldn't take one of the DeLoreans from the past, or it could cause a paradox. So the writers made this happen instead. That's what you get for overthinking time travel. I hope you're all happy with yourselves.

@LordAndrew:  Aw... that's a letdown. I was hoping for a loophole allowing for like Evil Marty or something down the line if it gets more than one season. I demand infinite universes!

Now excuse me while I go stare at this fractal.
