Best Team Based Multiplayer Shooters

When it comes to First Person Shooters there are more than enough to choose from, both good and bad. This list is more for the games that reward working together, rather than being a lone killing machine.  Here are my Top 7 Best Team Based First Person Shooters.

List items

  • Obviously this should be number one on the list. When it comes to working as a team, Team Fortress requires it (for most game modes). With maps such as Goldrush, where the one team has to push a cart carrying a bomb towards the end objective, you really have to rely on your team mates to lend a hand. Not only that, but majority of the achievements are only achieved with assistance from another player. Team Fortress is a great example of team work being necessary.

  • This was a tough decision. All of the Battlefield titles have a very strong team-based feel, but 2142 is the best example of the team based challenges. Though most of the Battlefield titles have the same abilities to assist team mates (reviving, healing, resupply, spotting) 2142 has something that the others don't; futuristic technology. This technology offers portable UAV scanners, motion mines for vehicles, and transport scanners. As well as, like Battlefield 2, there is the ability to be a Commander and that player has resources to offer to others (EMP, Mortar, UAV, Vehicles, resupply, etc.)

  • Though the second iteration of this series has many improvements, the first was something that was rarely seen before; a game that punished you severely if you didn't work as a team. If one person was to run ahead of the crowd, the active AI would exploit this eager player and an ambush would be waiting around the corner. For this reason, Left 4 Dead belongs on this list.

  • Again, another tough choice between this series, but Gears 2 wins simply because of Hoarde mode. Not only was it a revolutionary gaming mode spawning many clones, but Hoarde mode, simply put, is damn near impossible solo. You must act as a team to survive this game.

  • This one is a black sheep on this list. It isn't necessary to play with others in this game, in fact, the single player experience is exceptional. It's the fact that Borderlands is 15 times better with other people that makes it stand out. The campaign doesn't change when you add in another player, or three, yet the game itself seems to play better.

  • The main campaign, not really necessary for the multiplayer component. There are two shining gems with this game though.

1: Firefight. Similar to hoarde mode from Gears of War 2, however the skulls that alter the game is what separates this game from it being just a simple clone.

2: Vidmaster Challenge: Déjà Vu -Completed Highway on 4-player Legendary LIVE co-op, with Iron, and no 'Hog or Scorpion. Simply put: awesome.

  • 1 vs. 128 doesn't seem like a fair battle. That's why this game makes the list. Communication and teamwork are a must for this online game. If you were to try and be a "lone wolf" most likely you efforts will be in vain. Success is dictated by the team you're with.
