@Aus_ChA: I think everyone can pretty much agree Megan Fox is both a terrible actor and a terrible person.

As long as there are limited release dramadies starring Zoey Dechawhateverthefuckherlastnameis in a quirky role, there is no chance that this will ever get an Oscar for anything besides special effects. It's unfortunate really. (I've got nothing against Zoey it just seems like she's the new "critic's darling").

"
Yeah, I hear that. Zooey Deschanel is actually one of my favorite actresses, but I really don't like media darlings. As for District 9, I would never expect any awards ceremony to look at a sci-fi picture on the same platform as some other drama.

@mikeeegeee: That does seem like an interesting movie, but I'm more into epic sci-fi rather than horror sci-fi. Plus, no theatre near me shows it. :(

What can I say? The people in the theater when I saw it literally applauded whenever Megan Fox was on screen. So it didn't exactly take much to get them excited. "
Am I the only one who would rather see an actual fox rather then Megan Fox? Because foxes are cute and awesome. =P "
I'm sure an actual fox would do just as good, if not better, acting-wise than Megan Fox. "
Haha! I've no doubt you're right about that!

I think the standing ovation thing is dependent on the theater you go to and the people you see it with. When I saw Transformers 2, it got an ovation by people. Not that the ovation isn't a good judge of quality, just that it shouldn't be used as a primary barometer. I'm sure many people will like it and all the Armond White's of the world will find some silly reason to rag on it ("Blah blah apartheid"). I thought it was enjoyable, at the very least, and worth the praise it's getting. I agree that different people will get different things from it. But I think there's something there for everyone, at least. And that's more than can be said for a majority of movies. "
You do make a good point with that. Looking back, I suppose there where quite a few teens who I presume had come just to see stuff blow up, so maybe that's why.

Yeah, maybe so, after all, it's only August, but it's been a long time since I've been to a movie that received a standing ovation at the end. No way it'll be everyone's cup of tea, but I think it's a movie that speaks to a lot of people.

I just returned from seeing District 9, and let me tell you something! This is a movie that I would definitely call a must-see! To me, this is a movie best suited for viewing with as little knowledge about it as possible, so you won't find any spoilers here.

From the intriguing documentary-like opening to the climactic battle, District 9 is sure to have your complete and undivided attention from start to finish. It takes sci-fi in a eerily realistic direction, from the inherent racism that we sure know would be an issue to the twist that's both horrifying and totally awesome. Even the cliffhanger ending is done in a way that makes you feel that weren't cheated out of a conclusion, and provides enough mystery to ensure you'll be eagerly awaiting District 10, or whatever they decide to call the next one.

I would go so far as to call this the movie of the year, what about you guys? What were your thoughts on it?
