Piracy is ruining the PC as a legitimate gaming platform(Don't try and tell me otherwise) But whenever a company at least tries to come up with a solution, there is almost always extreme backlash against it. Maybe I'm just ill informed in all this, but what's the big deal in having to be hooked up to the web in order to play games? Sure, you might occasionally be on an airplane or in a place that doesn't have an internet connection, but I'm sure most of the dedicated PC gaming community has a PC that is always connected to the web.  "

Its people like you who listen to idiotic developers like Epic who have been chanting "piracy killed our sales". You don't want to hear otherwise? Then STFU and stop posting the same old nonsense.  You are ill informed, and you should realize piracy did not kill gaming.    Here is the issue with constant online checks: http://www.geek.com/articles/games/assassins-creed-2-unplayable-as-ubisoft-drm-servers-go-down-2010037/  http://dvice.com/archives/2010/03/ubisofts-anti-p.php  http://kotaku.com/5506062/ubisofts-drm-kicks-australia-while-its-down  http://www.afterdawn.com/news/article.cfm/2010/03/08/ubisoft_servers_go_down_legitimate_gamers_cannot_play_their_games   Now personally, I think Ubisoft makes terrible games so I wasn't affected. But all those people who did buy the game got screwed. The pirates? Nope.  Get it yet? DRM hurts the real owner more than the pirates. Yes, DRM is bad for "legit" users, and not bad for "pirates". Okay, are we getting somewhere?  "
You're forgetting why the DRM was forced upon games in the first place. Pirates. If piracy wasn't an issue, there would be no need for DRM. Developers and publishers doesn't put DRM in their games because they want to, they do it because they are forced to. They have to try different kinds of protection because piracy IS an issue. We can both agree that those tries often fail pretty miserably.  Why do they keep trying then? Look at Ubisofts DRM here. It is not until now that the DRM has been fully cracked, at least according to "Skid Row". That is almost two months after the games release on PC. I bet Ubisoft thinks of this as a success. Not because the DRM was good to the paying customer, but because it took so long to crack. No lock is completely safe. Every door can be opened. The question is merely how much you're willing to do to get past the security. Developers know this. They know they probably won't be able to create the ultimate DRM, but holding off the crack until two months after release.. That's a feat they can be happy about. "

How can they be happy when they made enemies and haters of their own customers, all while proving the point pirates have been making over and over? Do you really think customers don't choose to avoid Ubisoft after experiencing the DRM? And we haven't mentioned how piracy on the 360, DS, and WII is as rampant as on the PC but probably even moreso? Where can we find numbers showing PC piracy is greater than that on the DS and 360?

" I think you need help dude.  Adverts shouldn't cause you to feel pressurised or like they know what's best for you.  It's just how companies get their products out there.  I'd understand if you found the advert irritating or whatever but you seem like you have some real problems with just blanking things out.  Besides blocking adds is a stupid thing to do.  Do you know how free to use websites like Giant Bomb, YouTube, Google, Facebook and basically anything you read on the web exist? Adverts.  Every time you block an advert you hurt the website you're reading, you cost them bandwidth and don't give anything back.  It doesn't hurt you to see some random gif image at the top of a website and mentally block it out, but it does hurt a website to use an addblocker. "
I agree with this guy. I don't understand the rationale behind adblocking. I fail to see the offensiveness of an advertisement to the point where you need to purge them from existence.  "
For you two, a large bottle of Viaga. You guys need it!

" I agree with John1912.   I was once a PC only gamer in the 90's and early 2000's. Back then PC gaming as a platform was generations ahead of consoles. The release of the 360 and PS3 changed that and the industry redirected their focus. While console players were playing the PS2, PC gamers were playing HL2. That was only 6 years ago and it will take time for PC fanboys to let go.  I still have a gaming PC for which I use to play 360 exclusives and that's about it. All my hardware wasted on 360 ports only to run at a better resolution and framerate.   "
What about Dawn of War 2, WOW, other mmo's, the witcher, dragon age, all FPS games, + indie games, etc... But I agree there are lots of CRAP ports out there... [Batman isn't one of them however, dare I say its a sweet port.]

Until you feel comfortable, just don't increase voltages.  Once you get the highest OC possible with no voltage increase, then maybe play around more.

I would avoid buying any aftermarket coolers [which are great for OC'ing, but not worth it when you need to upgrade soon anyways and the fans never work on the new cpus... or rarely], and instead put the money towards a new cpu down the road .  Using the programs listed below, make sure you carefully monitor the temperatures your system reaches. I would download and install prime95 before doing any OC, and let it run overnight. Watch the temps and see how your "base" configuration runs. Take note of the highest and lowest temps the cpu reaches overnight.

But before even starting, go read more OC guides [they sink in eventually].   Following their advice, make sure you install the following programs before you start: CPUZ, RealTemp, Speedfan, Prime95.

You could also share more specifics - what motherboard and cpu exactly?    And ram model/speed? [CPUZ will tell you all this from within windows if you don't know already]

Other than that it looks like you've got the ideal system to benefit from a little OC!   Get to it!

I don't know the last time you looked at the screenshots of SC2 on the mac but it looks god - fucking - awful. As far as gaming is concerned, macs are still years and years away from being comparable. I will agree the valve is supporting the mac, but they only do so because valve loves money and they recognize trends, and right now every tween with their daddy's credit card has an apple product. But we both know, Valve will always be a PC 1st company; and if you think otherwise, then you sir, are crazy.   As far as I am concerned macs will always have Plants Vs. Zombie games, I'm not going to argue that, but it will be a very long time indeed (or possibly never) before we see an outside companies such as Bethesda or THQ putting their games out on PCs and macs, let alone macs only.  "
Really good shit believe me. I don't disagree with you, but you don't really disagree with me so I'll keep smoking it.  Orange Box is great on macs, and orange box is some sweet gaming. Then again so is plants vs zombies.

Dual booting sucks? And you don''t have to buy 2 operating systems for a pc anymore? Oh, and this means game developers will use OpenGL more and DirectX less! Anything to get us away from Microsoft360.  And this comes from a long term pc gamer - not a mac fanboy.

The GPU performance would have a 15-20% edge over the ATI solution, but will be hotter and more expensive to run due to higher power expenditure. "

Brad,

You are a journalist covering video games, please tell me you agree Microsoft has done everything it can to kill PC gaming (by making their pc gaming services inferior to their 360 ones). Valve and Blizzard kept it alive against Microsofts wishes and now Apple is starting to target gamers.

Games for Windows Live has been pure crap - a halfass port of their console services. They keep blocking develoeprs from releasing games on the PC, in order to get exclusives for console fanboys. Their client has had a very rough history, with way too many bugs. I could go on, but its pointless. Microsoft can only play catchup now, as they've already launched kinect as a 360 device and not a general pc device...

But I'm sure microsoft is going to push back eventually now that Apple is threatening to take over what is left of the pc gaming market. The largest PC game developers, Valve and Blizzard,  are no longer tied to Windows. Mac's are slowly becoming gaming PC's.

And I know so many PC gamers dream of a "gaming os" that would replace Microsoft. I think I had a dream Google made the ultimate gaming linux distro that all the devs embraced 100%... then I woke up... but anyways...
