Job interview tomorrow.

My first job interview in over ten years tomorrow.

I just completed 10 years of service and an opportunity has come up for a shift to another division in the company.  Instead of working with food for humans, I will be working with food for animals.  What's the worst that can happen?  If I don't get it, I have a good, stable and well paid job anyway.  I can't lose.  For that reason alone, I don't feel nervous or stressed.

Wish me luck  :-)

Proud dad showing off his daughter's artwork. Opinions?

My 16 year old daughter is very much into her artwork.  She has been  proficient at drawing since she was about 11.  All of these sketches were done with a drawing tablet on our Mac as part of her school projects.  It is all original work, not copies.  She started out copying manga and has progressed to this.  Tell me what you think.

Giantbomb's Biggest Loser: oldschool's Wii Fit challenge.

Fighting middle age spread - one day at a time.
Fighting middle age spread - one day at a time.
Welcome to my personal challenge.

If you only read one weight loss challenge thread this year, make it this one :-)

Those who know me on this site, know that I am getting on a little in the age department.  Unfortunately, as will happen to most of you as well, metabolism will slow and your weight will grow.  For some of you, if it hasn't already happened, your hair will also fall out.  Well, at least I still have a full head of hair - hah :P

A little background.

I was a chubby kid, but once i hit 20, I had a rapid weight loss and became quite skinny.  I am 1.74m (5' 8.5") tall and my young weight was always about 65 kg (10 stone).  when I was in my early 30s, I bottomed out at 57 kg (9 stone).  I was too skinny and I didn't really like it.  I was running regular marathons at this point, which goes some way to explain my weight.

At 39, suddenly my weight started to climb and kept climbing.  Before I knew it, my weight hit 80 kg (12 & 1/2 stone).  I wasn't overly bothered and it just sort of stuck there.  Then as I hit 45, it started to hit the mid 80 kg (13 & 1/2 stone) and I thought it might be time to do something about it.

After I got Wii Fit last year, on the 25th of May, I took the test and was horrified to find that my weight was 90.7 kg (just over 14 stone) and by the BMI chart, I had just entered obese.  To be honest, I didn't really feel like I was fat, but what I had noticed, which was odd, was that I could feel the fat in my armpits when I put my arms down.  Time to do something about it.

So, contrary to what disbelievers say, I used Wii Fit to successfully lose wieght.  I exercised for 30 minutes, every day.  It was my only exercise.

Of course I changed my diet as well.  I removed (virtually) all processed food, dairy product, bread, and meat.  I never went hungry, but I only drank water, ate fruit, vegetables and nuts and had chilli, tomato pasta every night for dinner (with occasional steamed chicken breast for protein).

By the 7th of August (2 & 1/2 months later), I had dropped 9.1 kg (20 lb).  Then suddenly, I just gave up.  I couldn't be bothered any longer.

That was 9 months ago.  In the mean time, I have not weighed myself once.  Suddenly, it was time to start again.  I got a new pair of work pants and they are a bit tight (snug actually) and I decided, what the hell, I am going to fit in them with comfort.  So, the challenge begins.

The beginning:
I used the Wii Fit board to check my weight.  To my, relative, pleasant surprise, my weight was 84.8 kg (near 13 & 1/2 stone), meaning that I am still 6 kg lighter than my peak, despite no exercise and putting most of the junk back in my diet (I still eat the pasta and salad every day).  To get to the ideal weight Wii Fit says I should be, I need a BMI of 22 and a weight of 67 kg - not going to happen.  I don't want to be that light.  It took me a long time to gain the weight, so I am not expecting to lose it in a rush.  I am setting a realistic goal of losing 0.5 kg every 2 weeks.

My goals:
Goal 1 - to get to my last low of 81.6 kg.  (by 12 weeks)
Goal 2 - to get to 79.9 kg, to finally see a 7 at the beginning.  (by 18 weeks)
Goal 3 - to get to 75 kg, because it is a number I am happy with.  (by 38 weeks)

DAY 1.
Weight - 84.8 kg
BMI - 28.01
Wii Fit age - 42 (Standing on one leg for 27.55 seconds & standing still score of 68%)
Wii Fit exercises - Hula Hoop: 10 minutes @ 3233 spins & Free Jogging @ 20 minutes and 6151 metres.

I was actually quite impressed that I could run for 20 minutes considering a complete of exercise for the last 9 months.  If you think it is easy to run on the spot for 20 minutes, try it.  In real terms, that would be about a 3 kilometre run.  10 minutes of hula hoop is quite taxing as well.  I will have the results of day 2 up shortly.

Drop in occasionally and see how I am doing.  Encourage me, laugh at me.  It's all good.

CURRENT WEIGHT:
DAY 16 - 82.9 kg
Overall decrease of 1.9 kg

Start: 84.8 kg
Week 1: 84.7 kg
Week 2: 83.6 kg
Week 3: 82.8 kg

The sadness of losing a pet (death).

I am sitting here in my kitchen, 11pm Sunday night, filled with sadness as my pet rabbit sits in a box next to me dying.

His life long friend died last weekend.  It is a very large rabbit named Lunar (he is black).  It is really depressing, as there is nothing I can do about it, except make him comfortable.  I think he is dying a natural age death.  My partner told me he was dead, so I dug a grave and went to get him out of the hutch, only to find him still alive - barely.

I am going to have to go to bed, knowing that he will likley die during the night.  This is really hard.

We all bond with our pets.  They become family, but their lives are generally shorter than ours.  Condolences to those who lost a pet recently.

My 360 musing - will I or won't I?

Forgive me whilst I indulge in my mental musing about the Xbox 360.  You see, I have been a major critic about the hardware for a long time and with good reason.  However, to deny the library for it would be ignorance in the highest degree.  I have been swayed of late (since late last year) because there were supposedly hardware changes (the falcon motherboard?) that should have rendered the high failure rate to one that is more normal for any electronic hardware.

As of today, I was paid a substantial bonus for work (several thousand dollars), so I decided it was time to treat myself to my second console this generation (actually, from a technical point of view, it would be my third as I have 2 Wiis - PAL & NTSC).  Yes, I could have gone with the PS3, but no.  Whilst the PS3 is without a doubt, a much better console in every way, it is still too expensive at $700 and the library is still light on for games that interest me.  When talking about games, it also must be considered the significant number of cheap games, both new and used, available for the 360.  With the $300 saving on the 360, I could easily add  at least 10 games to play.

Once I made the decision that it would be a 360, the next decision is about the reality of the games library.  Yes, it is big, but it isn't about size, it is about interest.  To this end, for 2 nights I gave the library a good study and was rather surprised by how little I was interested in.  It shouldn't have been that big a surprise really.  Looking back at last generation, the Xbox had the least interesting library for me.  Even though I have near 60 games, it is only the Gamecube and PS2 games that I am still playing.  Fact is, I don't care for shooting games.

So what games am I interested in and do they justify a purchase.
  1. Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
  2. Bioshock
  3. Blue Dragon (the game I want the most and quite possibly a system seller for me)
  4. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
  5. Enchanted Arms
  6. Eternal Sonata
  7. Fable II
  8. Infinite Undiscovery
  9. Lost Odyssey
  10. Mass Effect
  11. Resident Evil 5
  12. Star Ocean: The Last Hope
  13. Tales of Vesperia
  14. Viva Pinata
  15. Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise

..... and that's it.  Not a lot really, but still than a PS3 list would be.  As it is, my Wii library is over 50 games, but if that was narrowed down to the games I REALLY wanted, as opposed to those I bought cheap, it will still number about 20.  So, is that sufficient to get one?  I say yes.  That yes is supported by a decent number of games that I know I can get cheap, cheap enough to class them as good value.

Still looking good then.  So what model should I get?  I had a quick look around today and discovered the best deals are at EB Games.  It seems that the only Sku department stores are interested in selling is the Arcade pack.  It certainly is the only that gets promoted.  Thing is, why would I get it?  No hard drive.  It comes with games I could care less about or have (Sega Superstars Tennis, Kung Fu Panda or Indiana Jones seem to be the norm).

The two choices I have is a Pro Bundle at $400 (the RRP for the 360), with bonus games of Halo Wars and Assassin's Creed or the Resident Evil 5 pack (red console) for $569, with a 120Gb HD and the games Resident Evil 5, Streetfighter IV and Halo Wars.

Whilst I like RTS, Halo Wars can only be considered an average game.  I would play Assassin's Creed, but it means nothing to me.  Streetfighter IV has very limited appeal to me.  Resident Evil 5 is on my list.  The extra $170 for the RE5 pack just doesn't grab me.  I do know the owner of the EB store, so I might be able to choose different games to Halo Wars and Assassin's Creed, it is worth asking.

Lastly in my thinking, a rumour from left field hits me.  The 360 is about to get an upgrade and price drop.  Should I wait?  The rumours are about a small price drop ($20US, a larger hard drive and an included HDMI cable.  Rumours are not normally all that reliable though.  I'm thinking that waiting isn't really worth it as even if true, the addition of bonus games would probably disappear and leave me in the same position, price wise, anyway.

One extra last musing, I bought my first 360 game today.  Yep, I have a game and no console.  Now I have to buy one right?  No prizes for guessing the game.  It was Blue Dragon.  As it was a clearance line, I wasn't going to miss the opportunity.

A new Xbox 360 it is for me then.  It better not disappoint.  Of course, anything could happen between now and my next visit to EB.  I have been known to change my mind a lot :-)

Sleepwalking.

As a previous blog of mine recounted, I had an experience with a colleague urinating over my clothes on a business trip, whilst sleepwalking.  Sure he was drunk as well, but it ended with him unemployed (damage to the hotel suite).  This week, I had another experience with sleepwalking and this one truly frightened the living daylights out of me.

It was roughly 2 am and I was woken from my slumber by noises from the children's end of the house, their bedrooms.  It started with kind of groaning noises, followed by some indecipherable mumbling.  What truly got my attention was a sudden cry for help.  With instincts that only a parent can have, I raced out of my bedroom in total darkness, negotiating doorways, hallways and corners at full speed without running into anything.

What greeted me when I opened the door to my daughter's bedroom and turned on the light would send a chill through any parent's spine.  I found her seemingly unconscious, sprawled on the floor at the other end of her bedroom.  Having had a friend find her daughter lying dead after a heart attack last year (happy ending, she was revived and lived), I was mortified.  For about 20 or so seconds, I shook her, calling her name and tapping her face.

Suddenly, she just opened her eyes, turned her head and looked at me and said, "oh, I need to go to the toilet", promptly jumping to her feet and walking out.  To be honest, I not really sure she was actually aware of that either.  As it turns out, she had a nightmare that was combined with sleepwalking (she has a history of sleepwalking).  She remembers that she was being attacked and was trying to get out of the room.

That must have been very distressing for her as we all know how real nightmares feel.  However, the shock to my heart could have been terminal.

Feel free to share your sleepwalking experiences with me.  Hopefully some of them may give me a chuckle.  Hopefully none of them are sad.

Cosplay, spousal abuse & a trip to the hospital - my weekend.

What an eventful week I had.  One day after returning from my work trip to Sydney (and the resulting urine related story), was my annual pilgrimage to the anime/manga convention, AI-con.

We managed to rent a lovely house overlooking the bay in Hobart, with great views also of the city and Mt Wellington.  This was our third trip to the convention and as we get to know more people we enjoy it more and more.  As well as my partner, we also had our 13 and 15 year old daughters and a school friend to keep us company.  Some of the costumes were very well done and some of the girls were VERY attractive.

Anyway, it was a fun 2 days, I made new firends and then it was just the drive back home - or so I thought.

We were just packing the last of the car, which is a station wagon.  My partner was fiddling around the cargo area.  I decided that I needed something out of the back, so I went to get it.  The next thing I remember is some very sudden pain and then nothing.  My partner had finished in the back and was closing the rear door.  Unfortunately she didn't see me and pulled the doorstraight down and very hard, on my head.  The part that hit me was a small edge just near the lights, meaning that the blow was concentrated in a tiny area.

So, apparently I was unconscious for a short time, maybe 30 seconds, laying sprawled out in the university carpark.  When I came too, the first thing I remember was my partner laughing whilst asking me if I was okay.  She assures me it was just fear and nerves.  I am checking my life insurance just in case she increased it.  This meant that my weekend ended in hospital for a CT scan, just to be on the safe side.

It did get me 3 days off work, but that was kind of negated by the sizeable and painful headache that it left behind.  Having my clothes urinated on by a work colleague and knocked unconscious by my partner - what a week.

Alcohol, urine and sleepwalking - a tale of sorrow.

I had an interstate conference with my job last week.  It is the usual trip at the start of the year, but this one was a little different than my previous 9.

I flew into Sydney for the 3 day event to some balmy weather and a lovely hotel at Darling Harbour.  My room overlooked the harbour and the city - it was pretty damn fine.  The afenda for the next 2 days was pretty cruisy.  This was about celebrating a very good year in 2008.  Apart from the good food, our main activity for the first day was a treasure hunt through Sydney.  Sure, my team came last, but we had fun, plus the sights were good.

Best of all, I was told that because of meeting sales targets, I would get a 10.4% annual pay bonus next month.  That is a tidy sum and maybe a 360 is finally coming my way.  That evening we had a hypnotist as entertainment.  I have to say, I hate hypnotists as much as I hate magicians, but there are worse things to have to do.  The band we had playing was fronted by an extremely attractive lady who sported a camel toe that was more hypnotic than the hypnotist.

Alcohol was fully available and most people hit it pretty hard, as is inclined to happen when it is free (I don't drink alcohol).  After the evening, the MD opened a bar tab  for those who wanted to kick on and most did.  I gave up at 2am and went back to bed.  This is where a good trip turns bad.

At 3am, my room mate staggers in.  I try to have a conversation with him, but I give up quickly when I realise that he can't string a line of words together.  So off to sleep he goes.  At 4am I was woke by noises in the room.  I called out to him several times, asking him what he was doing.  I only got babble as a reply, so I switched the lights on.  I was confronted with an image that will haunt me for years to come.

There was my work colleague, completely naked, urinating on the television and the surrounding area.  I kind of yelled at him to get him to stop, but by this time several litres of his bladder contents were already dispersed.  I got him to wander off and he went to the bathroom, still naked, and a few minutes later he staggered back to bed and was asleep.  In fact, he was asleep the whole time this happened and he has a history of sleepwalking.

To my horror, not only was the television his vision of a toilet, but so was all of my clothes (except a pair of jeans and t-shirt) that I had placed for packing in the morning.  4am and I am in the bathroom washing the urine out of my clothes.  This is not how I saw my day going.  In the end I was pretty lucky because he just missed my laptop, DS, PSP and digital camera.

So, after washing out the urine I wandered to the reception desk and informed of a little problem.  As the smell of urine and the proximity to my bed was way too gross for me, when they offered me another room, I took it.  When I got home I did put my clothes throught the washing machine twice just to satisfy myself that they were clean.

Sadly, as a consequence, the colleague lost his job over it.  We had tried to keep the matter secret by telling the hotel that he would pay for the damage, but the manager complained directly to our head office.  After that it was all over.  I am really angry about it as losing his job was completely over the top.  No-one was hurt and he was happy to fix it.  Plus, the company is complicit in my view by allowing unfettered access to alcohol.  I feel reallly bad for and wish I had have tried a little harder to cover it up.  Reaity is though that I probably would have failed anyway.

Today I am no longer a 'virgin'!

After many years of thinking about it and at times, yearning for it, today, the first day of 2009, I finally lost my gaming, online virginity.  It was to some random person named Ruffles, which kind of sounds like a little girl, so I am feeling kind of creepy at the moment.  But still, I kicked her arse and that felt good.

Background - I have been gaming since Pong was launched.  I have played so many games and owned so many consoles, I have no idea exactly the house price size of the money I have spent.  I have never played online however.  Hell, I couldn't.  I have only, finally had broadband connected.  Sadly though, it is satellite and my consoles (Wii specifically) will not connect.  Sidetracking on that thought, it really annoys me that I can't at least get to the online shop and download games - the game playing I could live without.  Anyway.

Back to the my point.  I decided to try out my DS online.  First, it connected, making me very happy.  Now, what game should I try?  I thought about the obvious - Mario Kart, but I suck at it and I want to at least be competitive.  Advance Wars?  I am reasonable at that.  So I connect and Ruffles joins me.  I have a fairly set way I play most games.  First I get the cities closest and build a good defence and let them come to me.  Then I blow the crap out of them and go on the offensive as they try to regroup.

Ruffles fell right into my trap.  It wasn't long before I was pushing him/her back.  About 30 minutes of grinding, I had Ruffles completely surrounded and about to deliver the death blow.  It didn't happen, he/she finished before me and the Victory sign appeared.  I won my first game.  I was pretty pleased, but I did want the climax to be total annilhilation.

That is it then, virginity out of the way.  It was awesome and I yearn for more.  Pity though that I am restricted to the DS, although I could try the PSP (if anyone actually plays them).  Maybe now I should step up to a game of Civilisation IV online with the Mac, but like tantric sex, I don't know if I could go the distance - they can be very long games.

Today I am a man:)

Objective game library analysis -#1 PS3

The one constant that forever revolves around the forums like the moon revolves around Earth, is that *insert console of choice* has no good games.  This is usually so well balanced out by (sarcasm), by the the fact that *insert console of choice* has the best games, usually concluded with, “you would have to be a freakin' retard not to agree”.

You know how it is, we saw it all the time.  Hell, some of you reading probably do it (especially if you frequent the Wii forums when you don’t have on).  After the Wii, the PS3 seems to cop the most flak about its games library.

Rather than just take this for granted, or allow it to continue to annoy me in a small way, I decided that it needs to be put to the test, in an objective manner.  How, however you say, can it be objective when games re about taste?  Well, yes, it can be done and I intend to put to rest all of the nonsense that weighs down this subject once and for all (actually, that part is not true, it is just like if I could absolutely prove that Jesus was not the son of God, a religious person would still believe anyway).

So, this rather lengthy blog is the first in a series on all consoles.  Why would I bother you ask (or not)?  It feeds into my Asperger’s Syndrome, like a compulsion to be as analytical about subjects as I can be.  I must add for this particular subject, being the PS3, I do not own one, nor do I intend to in any hurry as the price is to high and as my analytical study showed me, there isn’t much (or enough) to satisfy my gaming tastes.

AN OBJECTIVE AND ANALYTICAL ANALYSIS OF THE PS3 GAMES LIBRARY.

Note:  This entire analysis is objectively based on average scores assigned in Metacritic.  No personal opinions are involved.  An average of game scores diminishes to negligible, personal bias in game reviewers.

The Statistics:

There are 203 games on the PS3 that are worth consideration.  There are only 14 games that are not worth the time of day, they are the rotten PS3 games.

Of the 203 consideration worthy games, 105 games are good to excellent games (a score of 75 - 100).  It is that simple.  These are games that anyone could enjoy, even if it isn’t your preferred genre or franchise because they clearly do what they set out to do - make a good game.  Of course, if you despise a genre or franchise, then all scores are irrelevant as you would never consider them (such as me a any Wrestling game), but this cannot be confused with a bad game.

98 games are average to okay (50 - 74).  This is that middle ground, the ones where you would only scrounge around in because you like the franchise or the genre, so you would get the enjoyment you seek, preferably at a budget price.

Summary Part One:

Looking at the big picture it is clear, the PS3 has games mo matter what the fanboy will say.  It has 105 good to excellent games to choose from.  Let’s face it, the vast majority of gamers won’t buy that many games during the entire life of the console (me excepted, I bought 110 GameCube games).  That is just 2 years into the life cycle, so imagine how many more games will fill that list in 1, 2 3 or 4 years!  There is no way it could be said that any reasonable gamer could not be satisfied (remember, I don’t own a PS3 and are not planning to).

Summary Part Two - A more in-depth analysis:

Now, it is easy to just say that there are 203 games that could be worth considering if you owned a PS3, but what about the games?  It is important to know the mix of games as many of us will shy away from games that do not interest us, limiting the number to select from.

This part of the analysis has no conclusive answer.  It is where subjectivity takes over.  I repeat, they are all games worth considering, but judge the types of games for yourself from this listing.

ACTION - ADVENTURE

These are games that include both adult and teen gamers.  They are variable in style from Tomb raider to GTA IV and Silent Hill.  Some of the kids style games like Narnia also fit in here, but almost always fit into the ‘okay’ selection.  This explains why the okay outnumber the good.

SPORT

This is the single biggest catered for market on the PS3 - 1 in every 5 worthwhile games is sports related.  It is also the area of the most narrow consumer market.  You find most people either like or dislike sport games with very few in between.  There is one exception, that being cartoon based sport, but there is only a handful of games (like Hot Shots Golf) that are in this category.  Simple maths says that the list of 203  is instantly reduced to 125 if you hate sport.

There is a split in this area though as some people dislike sport, but enjoy car racing (such as myself).  The split from this means that 1 in 4 games (still a lot) is sport.  The other issue with sport games, including car racing, is that the average consumer sees one game much the same as the other (within its specific sport) and only hardcore fans buy the same game with a new number every year.

GENERAL

This is the are that is most likely to capture a so called “casual” gamer.  These are usually friendly looking games, where you sing, play an instrument, answer a question, take the role of a cute character or perform the classic platform.  It does however hide some pretty hardcore games such as a JRPG or Turn based Strategy like Civilisations.  In the platform games, a lot of the movie based games appear, usually just scraping an okay score, but still have a big audience who are interested.

So bringing the core figures together, approximately 1 in 6 games will be an action adventure.  Only 1 in 25 will be a fighting game.  A significant 1 in 5 games will be a shooting game.  A whopping 2 in 5 ames will be a sport game.  Finally, a significant 1 in 5 games will be general and friendly in nature.

Objectively, there are more games on the PS3 for the more seasoned gamer, which is really the opposite to the PS2 which was heavy on a broader audience (where the Wii has gone).  The lighter gamer will probably find a smallish list to pick appropriate games from.  Bottom line though, if you enjoy games no matter what your taste, there is plenty to please.

We will never speak of this again :)
