2013 Top Ten

Here are ten of my favorite games from 2013.

List items

  • In a word: charming. No other game had me smiling and laughing the way Tearaway did. Getting me into papercraft was just icing on the cake.

  • Simple, sure. Derivative of Defender? OK. But addictive and gorgeous with a great sense of style? Absolutely!

  • What more can be said about this game than has already been said. Not without issues and I didn't particularly enjoy playing due to the stressful gameplay and ugliness of the story it was telling. But it was breathtakingly acted and one of the few games I've ever played to bring me to the verge of tears.

  • I've never been huge on GTA games, but Rockstar's fake California was drenched with enough style and flavor to entice me and the heists kept me playing despite Trevor making me want to put the controller down permanently.

  • I'm a big fan of DrinkBox Studios and all things Mexican. Guacamelee is a raucous good time.

  • As an actual fan of ACIII, my bar wasn't set quite as low as other's, but AC4 manages to improve on all of the problems of it's predecessor.

  • I found Rayman Origins (the predecessor to this game) to be a near perfect video game. Rayman Legends "improves" on the original by adding a ton of unwanted new features and changes, but it's still not enough to diminish a fantastic game underneath it all.

  • Gorgeous, Innovative, Scary, Batshit Crazy. You can call Beyond: Two Souls a lot of things. I call it Worth Playing.

  • I'm a sucker or all things cyberpunk. The visual style and Future French Flair of this game made it very striking despite the awful gameplay.

  • Gritty, Gory, Scary. These are not qualities I look for in a Tomb Raider game, but this one was still worth playing. It balanced the supernatural element better than most of the last TR games, and made Lara's journey into badass-hood believable.

  • Ridiculous.
