@aktane: Well, yes of course each individual's mileage will vary. But I still don't think that Alex's idea that new consoles will have trouble selling is likely. Maybe it could happen in the US, which seems to be the most fucked-up of all major countries (on top of very poorly managed COVID, there's the election which could have some crazy consequences). But many other countries (like mine) have their shit at least somewhat together and will likely sell out their console allotment easily... unless the price is ridiculously high. Scalpers are gonna be doing their thing too.

Personally, my launch PS4 feels ancient now, so I'm very excited for the new tech PS5 supposedly has. It's worth it to me just for the faster load times and the new controller. And I have more money than time, so I'm perfectly fine buying the console with just one game.

I don't know if I'd call your XB1 launch experience typical. I feel like most people just buy one or two games, especially since they just spent hundreds on the console itself. PS4 launch was actually pretty bad on the "exclusive" side (Knack & Killzone were the big ones), and it still sold out easily. I only bought Black Flag at launch, and it kept me busy for a month. Which was fine, to me. My point being, it doesn't necessarily matter how many exclusive launch games there are. As long as some big popular franchises are there, and the prices aren't too crazy, they will sell.

Thank you Jeff for the sensible response to the "delay the consoles" question. I'm getting tired of the concern and the panicking. I'm at the point where I don't even care if all the launch games are delayed. I just want to play my PS4 backlog (plus Yakuza 7) on better hardware with a new controller. I'm still using a launch PS4 with a 2014 controller that is just starting to have battery issues.

And, that fire situation sounds completely terrifying. I've never experienced a natural (or man-made) disaster where I live, aside from a very tiny earthquake, but with climate change who knows.

Wow Alex is soooo negative on this console launch. I think Spider-Man alone is a strong launch game for the mass market (Sony, please show us gameplay tho). Also, I know unemployment is up, but there are still a lot of people who never stopped working (like me) due to being "essential". Day One console buyers are usually enthusiasts anyway, and I'd guess most of them have been saving money for it, if they were able to. I have the money for PS5 and I'll be damned if I have to live with my launch PS4 any longer than I must. Even if I have to pay $900 Canadian.

As for what I'll be playing on PS5.. first thing will be Astro's Playroom. Then I will go to Yakuza Like a Dragon. (I briefly considered waiting for the "coming soon" PS5 version, but I've been waiting so long for this game already, so I'll just play PS4 version via backwards compatibility)

The PS5 Launch/"Holiday 2020" lineup, as far as we know, is a lot more than just Spider-Man, unless you think timed exclusives/console exclusives/cross-gen don't count for whatever arbitrary reason. (The important thing is, these games will not be on the competing console at this time.) It has BUGSNAX !!! Also, Deathloop, Kena, Godfall, Jett, The Pathless, Oddworld. Geoff Keighley called Astro's Playroom a "multi-hour" game, so unless he misspoke, I would count that as a launch game, too.

Reliable insiders have also said Sony should have another first party game ready at launch. And every first party game shown at their June showcase is targeting 2020 or 2021. That is HUGE if true. I'd expect Sony to give more concrete dates at their next big PS5 show.

Like Jan's friend, I am also willing to pay $800 for a PS5.

I live in Canada, and I have to emphasize, I paid $399 Canadian bucks for my PS4 on launch day. Our currency has devalued so much that $399 US is now $530 Cdn. If PS5 is $599, it would be $799 Cdn. (My prediction is $499 US = $650-700 Cdn)

(And, I love pointing out that games were $60 in 2013, but by like 2015 or 2016, they became $80. I really hope the price of games doesn't increase, or else I could be looking at $90-100 per game)

Also WTF at the Filet-o-Fish hate. It's the best McDonald's sandwich, except it is incredibly overpriced. I remember them being a lot bigger 20 years ago.

I just have to laugh when people, including this podcast, complain "The launch lineup is nothing! No games!" right now, but when November comes around, it's gonna be like "omg why is everything coming out at the same time, I don't have TIME to play ALL these games, and why are they 30+ hours long? Games are too long."

Supposedly, all of Sony's first-party lineup shown at the June event is targeting the first year of PS5. No dates given, because Covid could delay things, but obviously they're planning to space them out throughout the year. It is not a problem if only Spider-Man comes out at launch. There are going to be tons of third party games anyway. Personally, I'm probably gonna be busy with Yakuza 7 at launch (PS4 version on PS5 via back-compat), which will take me like 1 month to finish anyway. Plus AstroBot, which I don't even have to buy.

Anyway it's premature to be complaining about launch lineups. Neither company has confirmed it yet. Even Spider-Man isn't confirmed for launch, it's "Holiday 2020" and people assumed it. And, again supposedly, Sony still has game announcements to make in August.

Edit: Finished watching, and regarding the PS5 needing a Knack-like game.. I think AstroBot is exactly that, except it's free this time. AstroBot is literally made to showcase the features of the DualSense. And I think the controller could be a big selling point of the PS5, but it's just not easy to convey that without putting it in your hands. Supposedly.

As a PlayStation-only woman, I was kinda bummed when MS acquired Obsidian. Now that I know they are making Grounded and Avowed, I no longer care. Those games have zero appeal to me.

I read a bunch of (overwhelmingly negative) reactions to this show before watching, so I was mystified to see the GB staff being somewhat positive about it. Lack of gameplay footage for most titles was something I am shocked they STILL screwed up after the backlash to their May show. Which makes me think that those games are not even close to being ready. But even Halo..:

343 said that they are adding raytracing in a patch "sometime after launch". Which is really odd to me. It's supposed to be one of the big features of the Series X, and it's not in the flagship title at launch..??

And I gotta mention.. the news that the PS5 version of Yakuza 7 will come "at a later date" (which seems to imply MS moneyhatting the next-gen version), and also that non-XBox versions of Tetris Effect will not get the multiplayer update until next summer, is a high level of bullshit.

Finally... I see people saying MS isn't interested in selling their box, they just want people to get gamepass.. well then why are they releasing a box at the same time as Sony? Why keep saying "MOST POWERFUL CONSOLE EVER but actually you don't have to buy it lol"??? Well whatever, them trying to compete with PS makes PS better, so, sure.

Seems like Abby doesn't read the comments :p

As other people said before, people keep stealing because of "Sharing is Caring" neighbourhood action plan, which, based on googling, might be bugged to be always active even if you didn't vote for it?

And yes, "Cursed" means things like more fires, more bad moods, food spoils faster, and higher risk of accidental death.

Much respect to Abby for playing this on Hard Mode lol.

I basically abandoned English-language music in 2004 and this video reminded me why. Some of the songs Alex played aren't "musically" bad (some might even be catchy), but the vocal performance and the LYRICS are god awful.

Now I only listen to trash Japanese emo cuz at least no one around me knows what they're singing about. Neither do I, unless I concentrate on it.

I personally dig the PS5's look, except for the disk part sticking out weird, cuz I am so sick of black rectangular boxes. I am interested in a bunch of those games too. BUGSNAX (that damn song.. also it strangely resembles Wattam in some ways), Astro's Playroom (which is free anyway), Sackboy, Ratchet, Stray, Kena, and Volcano High. .. I haven't played the first Spider-Man & Horizon games yet, else I'd probably be excited for those too. Biggest disappointment was Ghostwire Tokyo, cuz I'd love to run around weird creepy Tokyo, but I can't stand first-person games.
