A Gamer's Hell (and what you can do to help!)

I went skidding off my scooter here in Taipei the other day. It was a stupid mistake and entirely my fault. As soon as I got up, I knew I had broken my wrist. As I walked to the side of the highway still in shock and bleeding from some painful roadrash, I came to a horrible realization.

Shit. I can't play games with a broken wrist, can I?

This isn't my wrist, but it's the same operation I had- except with fewer screws.
This isn't my wrist, but it's the same operation I had- except with fewer screws.

Well, my wrist was in fact broken and now one week later I am finally back in my apartment. Actually I'm very lucky that my injuries weren't more serious. I could have broken a hip, busted up my noggin, been hit by a car, or broken my right wrist instead of my less important left. Here I am though. 1 surgery, 14 stitches and 8 screws in my wrist later and I am asking for your help.

What games can I play with only one hand?

Luckily I've realized that many of the games I've actually currently been playing only require one hand. Point and click adventure games (Gabriel Knight), Strategy Games (Master of Orion II) and many other titles as well (World of Goo, Osmos). What are your recommendations though? What is the silver lining to this gamers nightmare? What overlooked titles that can be played with one hand should I use this opportunity to play through? I am abroad and currently only have a DS and PC.

I went through the trouble of typing all this up with one hand, so please, lets have those suggestions!

Yeah no, I'm pretty much back to 100% now. My wrist still clicks and I can't lift nearly as much weight as I used to, but the cast is gone and I can play games just fine again.

Man though, those 6 weeks were fucking terrible looking back.

Any game that uses only a Wiimote could be done one-handed. I also remember that if you use Lair's motion sensing controls, you could actually play it only using a right hand.

All you'll ever needed to play is pocket pull (Fun game, by the way; critics didn't give it good reviews, due to the lack of depth to it, but regular people LOVE it)

Dang, crazy story.  Hope you get better.  Anyone ever wonder if us gamers will be prone to arthritis and what not? heh, I've thought a few times about being an old geezer gamer.

If I'm going to be playing hentai or rapeplay games and I can't use my other hand for extra-curricular activities, is there even a point?

Great suggestions so far. I had totally forgotten about the entire Sim universe.

I'd play Civ 4 but I've already beaten that horse long past death.

The first thing a true gamer worries about is not the effect an injury will have on his career or home life, but how it will affect his gameplay.

If you're feeling nostalgic you could always give Sanitarium a spin. Maybe Phantasmagoria?

I suppose the Pokemon games don't require more than one hand.

Get well soon!

PC games are always good, RTS can be played pretty easily with only the mouse (besides control grouping, there is nothing critical that has a key binding).

Flash games, as mentioned above are good, tower defence games only need one hand and are great fun. Torchlight on steam is a clickfest, you might be a bit slow clicking on items or abilities but it should be possible.

Perhaps something like The Sims or Sim City? Neither require fast reactions or multiple inputs but can be interesting for a long time.

You can play a lot of RTS games with one hand. Not as efficiently, but all of the operations needed can generally be done with the mouse. Oh, and I bet typing this post was a bitch.

The Sims games can be played with just a mouse!

My apologies, I did not intend to sound callous.

I'm rather amazed that noone has mentioned Torchlight yet. It's a great dungeon crawler if you're into that type of thing and it's played entirely with the mouse. Normally on offer via the steam download platform.

Man, that blows, sorry to hear. Maybe some Wii Ware titles? Definitely phone, especially iPhone, games. I play Plants vs. Zombies on the can with one hand all the time.

@guiseppe:  Nah, no permanent damage. Just 6 weeks in a cast and another surgery two years down the line to get the screws out.

Point and click adventure games. Or learn to control your games with your feet, or better yet, with your mind!

A little over a year ago I lost the top part of my right pinkyfinger, which scared me because I thought that if there were some form of complications, I wouldn't be able to play games anymore. Then again, I guess you aren't thinking straight when you're standing around with part of your skeleton sticking out of your body. Anyway, things are good now and I can play my games without problems. At least not any signifcant ones anyway. In either case, this broken wrist thing is going to heal, right? I mean the damagae isn't permanent, is it?

I suppose any DS games that only use the stylus would be doable too as I have my DS here.

You lump all point and clicks together, so I assume you're taking many of them into account.  Machinarium's a good recent one, if you want to check that one out.
