What about controllers?

It looks to me that Dualshock 3 and XBOX 360 controller need revision.
I was wondering if right analog stick can be replaced by trackball. Or touch sensitive area.
That particular part can even be made replacable. You just remove the module if You need one or another.

I had once madcatz controller for PS2. R2 & L2 buttons were lower making them perfect for middle fingers. I do not know why it did not go further.

I really don't see why the analog stick needs to be replaced. I think it's brilliant. For example, PC gamers don't use trackpads over a mouse because you don't get the feedback or back to centre control that you normally would so I think introducing that kind of technology into a standard controller would be stupid. Microsoft and Sony have probably both experimented with such things but ultimately decide against it. Don't remove what isn't broken

I don't really see what would need to be changed either, how would having a trackball or any touchscreen elements improve current gameplay?

With the social networking elements in games and the consoles themselves becoming more and more prominent, I could see how having some of these things might be useful for that sort of thing and just generally browsing websites, but I'd rather see these as add on peripherals, like the text pads you can currently buy for the 360 and PS3.  That way they're not interfering with the gameplay for those who don't care or making them more expensive for the sake of having redundant technology onboard.

I struggle to see where changing the design of the Dualshock or the 360 controller would help give players better play experiences, I mean outside of the obvious task of fixing the horrible d-pad on the 360 controllers. Yes, there are some practical technological applications for trackballs and touch-pads but the thought of trying to use them in place of control sticks doesn't seem like an appealing concept at all.

@BionicMonster: Generaly Yes. Trackballs are Huge.
Most of equipment for navigation like Radars or ECDIS have them. And the balls are big.
But we have secondary stations. And balls for them can be fit.
For comparison, the size of the ball is approximately of the arc of right XBOX 360 analog stick.
And our system is old and cheap. Not ancient, but not cuuting edge technology.
I generally feel that it would be not the worst design.

uh...why? you get no physical feedback from a touch sensitive area and trac balls are fucking HUGE. honestly the stick is the best thing you could use.

I cant think of any situation where a trackball would be preferable over an analog stick and theres a reason that the DS uses a stylus. If you try to use your thumb on a touch pad it is very inaccurate and jittery because of the constant changing of the pressure points of a rolling thumb. Heat sensitive tracking wouldn't work that well either due to excess heat from your palms confusing the pad.
Simple, precise and durable user interfaces are usually the best way to go.
