I don't follow hockey but it must suck to start a new team. If all the best players are "protected" from an expansion draft, also assuming that means what I think it does, then what's the point?

You wind up with a team of third string jobbers who are at a huge disadvantage. Who the hell would pay to watch a team lose? It's fine for away games but Hockey is a business. If no one goes to the home games you make no money.

I get that ANY NHL player is still really great at Hockey... But by the same standard those "protected" players are just that much better. Right?

Seems like you're making a new team, spending hundreds of millions to do so, all the while knowing that there's like 5% chance of them winning the Stanley Cup. Seems crazy.

That is usually the case, but this time around teams were not allowed to protect as many players. My team, the Nashville Predators, lost one of their best scoring forwards because they had to protect their younger, talented defense men.

Certainly, Vegas won't be a top team, but it will not be like expansions in the past where the team is terrible for 5-10 years.
