Social construct, since different cultures have different ways of determining what male and female should be, and the line is pretty damn easy to blur.

There is a consistency in gender roles among way different cultures so your point is null.

For example, in muslim countries women have the same tendencies as women in the west to pick social (nurses, teachers etc) proffessions while men go for more mechanic oriented (engineering, math etc).

You might claim that this is due to discrimination but there are studies which support that THE MORE equality exists in countries, the more possible it is for women and men to show these patterns. For example Norway, which was voted for the 1st country when it comes to gender equality, shows a greater deviation from the 50-50 percentage in jobs than many other not-so-equal countries.

Also, throughout the world and history, males were more prone to violence and to assume the role of the protectors of their families, no matter the culture they exist in.

Different cultures do have different ways of determining what males and females should be, but there are also striking similarities.

Not to mention the studies on complete newborns (1-2 days old) which have shown babies prefering male or female toys according to their sex, so they assume gender roles without any influence from society taking place.

When you look at the whole picture in studies and notice the patterns, it seems that gender is really affected by your sex, so it is biological as well.
