@jasonr86: I dunno fam, I'd loooove to read some deep criticism of those movies. Stupid things being taken deadly seriously is what makes those movies so good in the first place and it could translate pretty well to analysis of them too ha.
@nethlem: My point wasn't that Japan is inherently more hostile towards issues of rape than anywhere else, my point was that the same shit happens in Japan as everywhere else. Like you said, things are getting better because people are speaking out, meaning the things in Japanese culture that some people in the west find objectionable are also being discussed in Japan. Saying "it's a different culture!" to defend shit depictions of rape is asinine.
@namoo: @nethlem implying that Japan doesn't have rape culture (or that rapey stuff is OK because Japan, I'm honestly not quite sure what his point was) is the most illogical thing that has been said in this thread. I don't even think GZ was that bad, but that is some fuck ignorant shit.
"There is still widespread belief in 'rape myths'," said Masayo Niwa, an official at the Centre for Education and Support for Women, Japan, referring to the perception, contrary to law, that only assaults by strangers can be defined as "rape".
"Victims don't report cases because they think society can't be trusted to believe them," she said.
Maybe I'm wrong, and someone tell me if I am, but I find it problematic that Paz being raped is always brought up as the "issue". When I played Ground Zeroes, I never thought it would be as big of a deal as it was considering Chico, a child, was violently molested as well. Paz, or rather her real name, Pacifica Ocean is like fucking 30. I thought the big deal coming from the reaction to the dark themes was the fact that they weren't just willing to go to rape, they were willing to go to child rape.
But people barely bring that up.
This is a good talking point. I think the reason what happens to Chico is never/rarely criticised is because, unlike Paz's trauma, it isn't used only to further someone elses plot arc. I mean sure it's fodder to make you hate Skullface just the same, but screen time is given to show how Chico might be emotionally effected by it (shutting off and just listening to his headphones constantly, as well as his obvious fear when Big Boss shows up) where as Paz just gets vagina bomb'd. What happens to Paz also feels like it was written as comeuppance for her betrayal in Peace Walker, which comes across as overly sadistic.
I mean personally I'm not that bothered by what happens in GZ. I can definitely see what people are saying though, and I think this kind of conversation is good,.
Patron is NOT getting nerfed. Kinda can't believe it. I'm a bit conflicted because even though I like the deck it feels like it's going to overshadow the new possible decks that always arise out of an expansion.
Yeah, I think I read on Polygon a couple weeks ago that Ben Brode had said there was no nerf coming. He seems fairly confident that the new cards can counter it on their own, which seems like bullshit to me. The amount of Patron Warriors on the ladder make the game kinda no fun to play. I hate them more than Face Hunter and thats saying something.
I'm just super excited for this huge revelation they promised that would justify the choice for Quiet's attire, and make all the critics of it feel ashamed of themselves. For the life of me, I haven't been able to think of a single reason that would work.
Didn't they explain that the reason was because Kojima wanted to make a "sexy" character for people to cosplay as or some shit?
edit: I want an in-game reason for why Snake is smooching all those posters of pretty ladies.
Horniness?
I was thinking of his defense of the character design he made about two years ago, when people where reacting to it. Specifically, this line:
"But once you recognize the secret reason for her exposure, you will feel ashamed of your words & deeds."
I. Cannot. Wait. to hear what this reason is. So good.
Speculation: I think Quiet is Chico. Kojima is gonna do this whole big thing about how being forced to rape Paz damaged him to the point that he renounced his masculinity. People are gonna be PISSED not just because of the implication that trans people are just mentally damaged, but because it makes Chico the victim of Paz's rape. It's gonna be a train wreck.
Again, just speculation, but I honestly think thats how it's gonna go down.
