PositivelyGreg: Best of 2009

  • Almost so obvious as to be shameful. This game delivers in so many ways, with gameplay that's good enough to justify any plot and a plot that's good enough to justify any gameplay.

  • Sure, PC support sucked. But this game burst onto the scene with just enough Serious Sam-paced action, beautiful stylized art, and a single campaign that scaled extremely well for one to four players.

  • In a day where every game is, in some small part, an RPG, it's nice to have a game that brings us all back to what it means to play a role. In a game.

  • Hell, I don't even like Batman much, but this game delivers exactly what it promises. My biggest fear is that Rocksteady may now have unmeetable expectations on their heads for a sequel.

  • I will admit freely that it helps to be a fan of the Beatles. Luckily, I'm a fan of the Beatles. This game is superb and so far DLC isn't even a conscious decision I make... I learn that it exists and the purchase is automatic.

  • The one game on the list that I didn't play. I'm sure some other PS3 games would make it if I had a PS3, but this one deserves an extra nod for holding itself to a single bold goal and challenging players to come along for the ride. Amidst a lot of games that feel committee-driven, watered-down, accessiblized, or "safe", we need developers willing to go out on a limb.

  • Every year we get further proof that downloadable games and "full retail" releases are converging, and quickly. Shadow Complex delivers an adventure that's just about the right length to avoid getting stale, at a price that fits the size very well. Brick and Mortar trembles.

  • When I need a reason to justify still having a Wii hooked up to my TV... there's Muramasa. Shouldn't have been done as a Wii game, but nonetheless a great title.

  • Who saw this coming? I mean really. A great little game that promises a bright future for Runic.

  • You know, it's an odd title that many people won't get into, but SMT:Devil Survivor delivers a lot in a small package. It's got all the SMT trappings (by which I mean tons of devils to acquire and merge, and a whole element-weakness system to exploit) and a nicely realized tactical combat system. The plot has a lot of clever characters and a surprising number of branches and alternate endings. And it's about as heretical as you could possibly wish for.
