Best Games I played in 2013

So with the year ending soon, now is the time to look back at the hours I've spent playing games there year and see what was great and what was just a good time.

Stuff that didn't make the list:

AC: IV - I haven't played it yet. Maybe it will be cheap on a Steam sale soon.

Any COD/BF Game - Infinite was my 1 FPS this year. That's about all I can ever handle.

Brothers - I found 11 better games to play. But I should try and get this played some day.

GTA V - After all the Saints Row stuff, I don't really feel the need to play a "serious" open world game anymore. Sorry.

List items

  • Once again I played an inordinate amount of Dota 2. Far and away the most played game and the most fun thing I did this year. Plus it isn't in beta now! Hats for everyone!

  • There seems to have been some blowback since this game's initial release, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Columbia. Elizabeth and Booker's wild sky ride was a top moment. The story and especially that ending made the game.

  • Didn't play a single second of multiplayer (though it hear its great), but this was a fantastic single player campaign. Varied levels and new hero units made it feel fun the whole way through. The feeling of overruning a Terran based with hordes of Zerglings never gets old.

  • This year saw a lot of travelling for me, which ended up being great because I could play LOTS of Fire Emblem! Fun story and great turn based combat. I have no idea why this series isn't a huge deal every time a new one is made.

  • With superb production and flawless tingling of those nostalgia beats, ALBW was the most fun I've had played Zelda since A Link to the Past. 3D Zelda is dead, Long Live 3DS Zelda.

  • GET GODLIKE, SON! This fighting game is easy to pick up and difficult to master. There is real skill in a game using only 2 buttons and everyone can claim to have some. This produced some of the best times I've had with friends on a couch in recent memory. Also Shoals is broken as fuck.

  • What a game. I had tons of fun blowing everything in Steelport to smithereens with my mind fireballs. The over the top absurdity of this game probably can't be beaten. Everything is constantly exploding and that's just the way I want it.

  • One of the best "roguelike"-lite games I've ever played that happens to double as a pretty great, randomly-generated Castlevania game.

  • Probably the greatest update to the base version of Civ V. All the culture changes and tech tree shake ups really make the boring end game of the original feel useful.

  • Barely squeaking into the top 10, Ni No Kuni was a delight. Yes it was maybe 15 hours too long, and the battle controls were frustrating at times, but I can't stop listening to Ol' Drippy. The second half of the game isn't as strong as the first, but as a whole I loved the time I spent in the fairy world.

  • I played this through on the Vita this year. What ambition! If only the second "disc" had been realized the way it might have been. A fun take on JRPG combat and a story that still holds up (for the most part, minus that crazy ending). Not more fun than Ni No Kuni but a must for every lover of classic Squaresoft RPGs.

  • Honorable mention down here for this fantastic card game. I got into the beta a month or two ago, and it has been a great distraction ever since. I'm not ready evaluate it's merits yet, but I think there is potential here. If you ever played Magic the Gathering back in the day, this will feel right at home.
