Here's what Sony did @ E3 2015

Sony wasted little time in getting into some gameplay with what looked like live gameplay of The Last Guardian. I just want to congratulate those of you who won bets at this point and offer commiserations to those of you without faith in the random number generator that is the video game industry. The Last Guardian finally has a release date; 2016. Okay, it’s barely a date but come on it’s been like four years already, how could they miss this one?

Next up we saw Guerrilla Games make an appearance to show off Horizon Zero Dawn. Zero Dawn looks like Enslaved taken to an extreme. After some ‘darkness’ comes and wipes out humanity, primitive tribes settle in the remains of cities and are hunted by giant robots. It’s a mysterious premise, you’ve got to admit. There’s a whole lot that could go wrong but there also seems to be some cool weapons which combine primitive and futuristic tech. Immediately afterward, a new Hitman game aptly named Hitman was announced with a few PlayStation-specific contracts. It looks a whole lot like Absolution so if you liked that, you’ll probably like this one.

Hey FGC guys; Cammy and Birdie are the new Street Fighter V characters. I don’t know what that means but as of July 23rd you’ll be able to play the public beta of SFV so get hyped.

Sorry for swearing here; No Man’s Sky looks fucking rad. The scope of this game is god damn incredible. This is one game where every time I see something new I get less sceptical about the scope which is paradoxical and I feel like I’m setting myself up for disappointment but please just let me believe. The presentation was modest and it was some Irish guy who was clearly fed up of talking about the game to people but it was just so honest. Apparently there’ll be a release date soon, but not soon enough for my liking.

Media Molecule are back with their weird-as-fuck creativity. It looks like they’re building on the sculpting/animation tech they showed last year in some crazy ways, placing more of a focus on collaboration. They’ll have more to show at Paris games week so if you’re interested in that, you’ll have to wait a little while for more information about Dreams.

I am extremely intrigued by Firewatch. If you’ve seen any of the trailers you’ll know what I mean. It’s just intriguing. What do you do? What’s the point? Why is it called Firewatch? I guess it’s the nature of a mystery game to be mysterious, huh? No release date unfortunately but Firewatch is very high up on my list of games to watch. You know what isn’t on that list though? Destiny. I’m sorry I just don’t care for it and from what I’ve heard it’s lacking in some pretty serious ways. Some new gear, a new map and some other digital goods doesn’t do a whole lot to fill that void.

AC: Syndicate reared its head again but as with the prior appearances we weren’t allowed to see any gameplay. You will be able to play some extra missions only on PS4 though. In yet another jarring transition, you’ll be able to play World of Final Fantasy first on PS4 and PS Vita in 2016. There isn’t much information on what it is but its super chibi. Oh hey, are you into Final Fantasy but looking to play something you’ve already played? Stuck in the 90s? Unable to let go of the past? Don’t worry; The Final Fantasy 7 remake you’ve been vying for is finally coming… eventually. Yup, it’s real now. The internet won.

Devlolver Digital had a brief showing of a couple of games including Mother Russia Bleeds, EITR and Crossing Souls and oh my shitting Christ they’re going to make a new Shenmue game. I don’t think anyone expected this. It was a bigger punch line than The Last Guardian before E3 started. Granted it’s a Kickstarter but even that much is more than I’d expected. I don’t know whether to actually be excited now. According to the kickstarter, expect it in December 2017.

Yo the trailer for Batman doesn’t mess around. The joker is dead and according to the narrator, batman will likewise die. Now I haven’t been keeping up with the batman games but I’ve clearly missed a ton if this is where the franchise has gone. This DLC available on the 23rd of June will follow a storyline based around Scarecrow, definitely one of the most interesting villains in those games.

I’m going to just assume this is only available in the US but PlayStation View will allow you to buy channels a la carte so that’s going to be cheaper than whatever bundle you can get currently? I have no idea. This sort of lacklustre announcement was followed by the even less lustrous announcement of Black ops 3 on PlayStation. Yeah guys, no shit there’s going to be a Call of Duty game and it’s going to be on the PS4. I really do think Sony is barking up the wrong tree with Call of Duty at this point. Sure, that series sells millions but is it worth it to spend all of those marketing dollars on showing a demo of a known quantity? Anyway, Black Ops 3 looks like it features increased mobility and some weird kill streaks (Nano-bees!) but you can probably guess what the rest looks like. PS4 owners are getting the beta first and will get temporary exclusivity on map-packs. Woo.

Star Wars is teaming up with Marvel and some other junk in Disney Infinity 3.0 for some exclusive stuff on PS4. I’m going to echo a sentiment I shared about that minions game EA announced. Buy it if you’re 6. Or buy it for your 6 year old, I don’t know. That’ll be available this autumn. The announcement of Star Wars in Infinity 3.0 seemed to have been an opening to talk about Star Wars as some dude from Dice started talking about Battlefront again. This time ‘round the gameplay looked more like some kind of hoard mode and there was a little tie-in with the upcoming episode 7 movie shown but at this point the Star Wars fatigue is beginning to set in.

Finishing up the show was the next entry in the Uncharted series. The E3 gods couldn’t let a show go by without some technical issues so whatever machine was running this demo first took an age to load up and promptly shat the bed as the gameplay started. What we wound up seeing was a pre-recorded video of gameplay. This is almost more of a known quantity than Black Ops 3. It’s another Uncharted game through and through. Lots of cool, beautiful set pieces and action sequences where Nathan Drake barely makes it by the skin of his teeth ensue.
