The way I play these games is defense and combo heavy. Especially the fifth game (the one I suggest playing because it is on modern consoles). But the nice thing about these game is that all of the characters feel really different. The fighting consists of high, medium, and low punches and kicks as well as grapples. Some button combos can lead to 'special-ish' type moves but, the way I play, combos are the way to go. It's a really cool franchise and, though I haven't played every game, the ones I have played have been fantastic (1, 2, and 5).

Why won't they just remake Bloody Roar already?

King of Fighters 13 is good, Street fighter x Tekken is ok, third strike is great. Mortal kombat is great.

I've only ever liked Soul Calibur personally though 5 was kinda disappointing. Really looking forward to Skullgirls.

The Arc Systems games are the best non Capcom fighters in my opinion. Guilty Gear/Blazblue are amazing. I'd also put KOF up there.

All the games you mentioned are worth playing (though I wouldn't call Smash Bros a fighting game) and I would also include King of Fighters XIII and Street Fighter x Tekken.

They are all fun and made better with an arcade stick (except smash bros) and people to play against who are at or near your same level. You forgot to mention Tatsunoko vs. Capcom.

I have played a bit of a few fighters and my opinions are:

Tekken/SC - ehhhhh so so

SF/MK Good

MVC - disgraceful, boring etc

Smash bros - awesome fun

There is a lot of fighting game series and franchises out there. Some are good. Some are bad. Some are in the middle. I want to know which fighting games are worth playing, weather just one game in the series is good or if the entire series is worth playing.

Games like: Tekken, Super Smash Bros., Mortal Kombat, Marvel vs. Capcom, Soul Calibur, Street Fighter, King of Fighters, Killer Instinct, Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive.
