GoG is live! I get my Fallout on.

In my last blog I talked a bit about Good Old Games. Well, I got my Beta invite, and immediately went out and purchased the original Fallout, for a sweet £3.50-ish. Then, I get sent a code for a FREE!!! (I love that word) Interplay game. Interplay make Fallout, and Fallout 2, so I bought Fallout 2 to go along with it. Now, that was cool, 2 awesome games for the price of one, and the price of that one was really, really small.

Also,  with each of these games you get a Soundtrack download, Avatars, Wallpapers, all for free when you buy. I thought that was really cool. In fact, my spiffy new PipBoy icon is from that download. So I got something extra out of it. Either way...cool. And I swear, I am not being payed by them in any way, I am just impressed with their service.

Good Old Games.

I just signed up the Beta business over at GOG.com, which would stand for good old games. I think the main reason is Fallout 1 & 2. Those aren't available on Steam, and I don't like the way GameTap works, so seen as you can buy these out right it might be the place for me to get them. I've never played a Fallout game before, but with Fallout 3 coming up, I want to play the previous ones to get a handle on the themes and such. Having said all of this, is it weird that my Icon is the Vaultboy mascot?

Also, I am going to start talking about Flash games in an upcoming blog, and probably further upcoming ones after that. I have already talked about how much I like Kongregate in a previous blog, so I guess now it's time to start talking about the games that make me like it.

New Review, It Sucks. Also, Marriage.

Portrait of Ruin.
Portrait of Ruin.
I just finished writing up a review of Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. To be frank, I don't like it. It's not as if I've not put in the time with this game either. I just finished a second playthrough, got the 1000% completion, have finished all the quests except 3, and am working on filling out the Enemies list. And I have been doing this now, not months ago when I got the game, but now, so it's fresh in my mind and relative to me now.

For some reason, I don't like the review. Maybe I am just rusty, I've not had much practice recently. The closest I have come to any of that kind of writing has been re-editing my TimeSplitters 2 review that I wrote years ago. Maybe I just don't know how to express myself with that game as well as I thought. It's odd, but the review is there, and I guess people can make up there own minds if anyone ever reads it. Hmmm...how demoralising.

Also, play this game, The Marriage. It's free, small download, made by Rod Humble (one of the Sims guys over at EA), but I want people to tell me what they think. Try not to read the game description on the internet, but read the help file when you boot the game up. I want to know what people think of it, if they could figure it out. Now I just have to hope someone actually plays out so I can get some discussion on.

Annoying...

If I only had a Wii, then yes, probably. Knowing I could get very close to retail price for the console, I wouldn't be hung up too much about getting rid of the thing. Taking in to account I have a 360 and PS3, I'm not too fussed. The Wii is just a nice, little party piece.

This statement annoys the crap out of me though. Nintendo is just letting down its oldest fans so it can pander to it's new fairweather friends, the casual audience. Who knows if Nintendo will be able to keep up this approach until the end of the world, but when you just negate everything your oldest fans have given you over the years in order to look good to the popular crowd.

Sorting my collection out.

I have just started a collections list (I had to make another one, as the standard one wouldn't work? Confusing), and have added a bunch of games. This took forever the last time I did this, I had to dig things out and such, but maybe I can do it quicker this time as GB allows you to add things very easily. I have my PS2 and GC games to go through, as well as original Playsation, SNES, NES and portable stuff.

Should be fun...I will have to find out where I stuck my SNES games...in a box somewhere.

Resident Evil!

Not the original, but 2 and 3 specifically. I would love to see them remade like REmake, or even using the RE4 controls to see how that changes the game. To be honest, I just want another Resident Evil set in a city environment.

I have no opinion on the game, but alot of opinion on the drama.

For me, Too Human always looked interesting, and I find Dyack a fantastically interesting character. From his appearances on the 1UP show, it's obvious he has opinions on everything and that a good majority of the time they are grandiose and out there, but interesting nonetheless.

The "Drama", however, can go to hell. A reviewer has the right to give any game any score, because not all games are for everyone. Of course, games are able to contain certain mechanics and technology that make them obvious candidates for a good score, but there is always enough artistic room to justify any score you wish to give it...probably.

From reading a good chunk of these reviews, looking at videos and screens and listening to other peoples opinions I can see that Too Human is nowhere near awful. It's also nowhere near fantastic, but it's probably possible to have an opinion that falls near to either of these extremes. I could also understand any of these opinions, so I wouldn't question them. At the end of the day, an opinion is an opinion and it's unique to that person.

Confused about the points system.

Ok, so I'm pretty confused about how the points system is working now I am over 1000 points.

So...I have edited some more of the TS:Future Perfect article, and my point count for that article has gone from 270 to 352. Great! However, these points don't get added to my profile. Do I have to wait for a mod or something to approve them still before I get the points?

The weird thing is I get points for images right away as well as, as far as I know (and I realise I just used "as" 4 times dead quick), general information stuff, as I did the GI for...something, the other day and it dumped my point count up.

I am massively confused, but I hope that my point count will eventually take in to account those extra TS points, because I like those games and my overall rank. =P

EA gets back on the board, and gets me excited all over again.

I've just had a quick look at the Skate 2 trailer (there might need to be a dot in there somewhere) and it looks as if it's doing everything I want it to. You can get off the board, which fixes a vast majority of the problems that the first game had (getting to certain spots and navigating congested areas). It also looks as if you can move objects around the world to create you own lines, which is an added bonus.

The thing that got me the most excited, however, was simply seeing the extra movements you can now do in the game. It looks as if they're putting in the ability to manipulate your feat more, so you can do foot plants and rails and boost of the floor, and the like. The fact the they had an actual Hippie Jump in the game trailer is also promising, as it  looks like you may be able to do tricks by simply moving feet off of the board. Excellent. Plus, people hand planting while someone jumps over the is totally...rad?

EA seems to be far from the monster is was. They have a lot of, dare I say it lest the cliché gods smite me down, innovation going on. I honestly think EA have a rare opportunity to turn public opinion around, probably thanks to Jonh Ricoo....Rica...Riccotellio....let's just say that John guy who runs EA.

Kongregate and why I love it.

In between figuring out what I'm able to edit next, and hopefully score more points, I will usual play a game. Something weird that's been happening more and more recently, however, is playing flash games online instead of my regular console and PC offerings. Why? Because of Kongregate. Maybe it's because I'm an achievement whore, so I like the fact I get awarded points whilst I play, but I think that on the most part...the games are actually good.

I mean, yes, there are quite a few stinkers, but just like Microsoft's XNA experiment (which they want to be the YouTube of games) the good stuff rises to the top. And when you get in the chat rooms, you can tell the good from the bad in the simplest way of all, people are playing the good ones.

Take GemCraft for example. It was all the rage a couple of weeks back, because it was part of one of Kongregate's ever changing challenges, to win a card for their own flash based card game, Kongai. So I started playing. Hours and hours and hours later, and I finished it, and couldn't wait for more. It looks like I'll be getting more too, as they are planning to release a second game, and quick turnaround is something you can definitely praise flash games for. GemCraft has a lot of depth, tons of content, and is something I would be willing to pay for on, say, Xbox Live Arcade. Instead, it's free, and that's really rather cool.

So, next time you're trying to kill some time, try out Kongregate. The community is good and thousands strong, the achievements add something to the sometimes simple games you're playing and earning cards is a even better way to persuade you in to playing the good games. My user name on K is Nizumal, add me if you have an account, we can chat while playing some flash games. Flash is returning in a good way...
