Shasam: Best of 2009

List items

  • "Oh, a Batman game? Sure, whatever, those films made some money so I guess they are looking for some of those chumps to buy this..."

    (Post release)

"Holy Cow, Batman! This is amazing!!! How the hell did they pull that off!?!?!"

Game of the Year, no doubt.

  • Modern Warfare 2. Easily the best multiplayer game of 2009, with a kickass Single Player and Co-Op mode to boot. A superb refinement of the excellent Call of Duty 4.

  • Theres not much to say about this, nothing that hasn't already been said in a million places anyway, but Nathan Drake is a badass (and one of the best bits is, he doesn't really know it). With a bajillion action packed scenes and some absolutely amazing set pieces, this is easily the best PS3 exclusive of the year.

  • The little shooter that dared. Sticking itself between Halo 3: ODST and Modern Warfare 2 is a risky move that, by all accounts, paid off. Mixing in just enough RPG to give you a bad case of loot-rabies, it's easy to sink hour after hour in to "Maxing out" a character whilst Halo jumping and shotgunning people in the face.

  • Unlike previous band orientated games, The Beatles: Rock Band is made up solely of the bands music and changes up the entire structure and visual style from Rock Band 2 to create a game that not only plays music which sounds like the Beatles, but delivers on all the peripheral aspects too, making youu feel a little closer to the 60's.

(NOTE: If I felt I could get away with it, Rock Band 2 would be in this list. Because from now until they either stop putting out DLC or make a new one, Rock Band 2 is game of the year! I love it that much, and they are doing a fantastic job of keeping that game going.)

  • After playing Forza 2 for an unhealthy amount of time, Forza 3 was an easy purchase. Expecting only an incremently change, it was surprising to see just how vast the changes were. A ton more cars, a ton more tracks and, possibly most important, a slew of changes to the community features and trading aspect of the game.

  • For what you get for that tiny price, it's not hard to justify (not that you should have to) buying this. The quality of the game, however, is way above what anywould would expect. You should get this, it will probably run on anything, so there's no reason not to.

  • It's normally hard to justify the smaller, downloadable title for a "Best of" list when it's got to go toe to toe with the big retail, heavy-hitters of the year. Shadow Complex, however, easily holds its own. It's amazingly detailed, has a ton of replayability and provides a new experience for a genre style that hasn't been big in recent years. A breath of fresh air in this years set of downloadable titles.

  • The controls are still HELLA old school, but Resident Evil still remains a fantastic experience. The co-op adds a lot, and the amount of weapons and custom attachments in the game do a good job of making the shooting enjoyable. At some point, they need to change up the style again, but for now it gets a pass. Well, more than a pass...

  • Just sneaking on the list, but in now way a small time game, inFAMOUS easily beats Prototype to the punch (critically, at least). With superior combat aspects and a much more interesting story, it's a must for PS3 owners.
