Game of The Year 2014 Users Choice

Might as well use this list since it was already made for me by the lovely GB staff. Here are the best games of 2014, as chosen by me! Keep in mind I have not actually finished a lot of the games on here, but I still feel confident in where I ranked them.

List items

  • I had an itch to play a party based CRPG for god knows how long. I tried DA:O, the Baldur's Gate games, and others, but nothing seemed to scratch it. Divinity was then released (on my birthday no less) and did the trick. Messing with the elements and combo systems never ceases to be fun, and although the story loses the thread a bit near the end, the writing is enough to keep you wanting to move forward.

  • There is a lot to Endless Legend. RPG style character sheets, skill trees, and gear. This is stacked on top of tactical turn based combat. This is stacked on top of a Fantasy 4X strategy game where almost every playable race not only has its own flavor, but also breaks the rules in a meaningful way. All these systems and tweaks means that there are near endless ways a game can play out, and the unpredictability breathes new life into a mostly otherwise stale genre.

  • A fun-ass video game that does not give a shit that it is nothing more than a fun-ass video game is oddly refreshing at a time where every game feels like it needs to change the world.

  • After not really liking Origins (that game has not aged well at all), and not playing DA2, there is finally a DA game I can say I truly enjoy. Sure the combat is not the best, but it plays well enough and the exploration and interactions with the rest of your companions, as well as the interesting arcs for most of said companions, more than make up for it.

  • Supergiant does it again. The music and art are the true stars here, but the surprisingly deep skill system and cool take on mixing real time and turn based combat keeps it fun to play throughout.

  • It is a good Mario Kart game. Perhaps the best Mario Kart game since Double Dash. That alone would be enough to justify its spot here, but Nintendo upped their game with working online play (I know!), and DLC that actually managed to be a great value. Also, wow this game looks great, especially at 60fps.

  • It has its flaws, but it is also the most fun I had with a multiplayer shooter this year. Running up a wall, hopping onto a titan, then shooting the shit out it continues to be super satisfying. Adding new modes for free does not seem to have increased player count on PC like I hoped, but I still think the horde mode equivalent is pretty good. If they tweak some things like progression the right way, I can see Titanfall 2 being a big hit because the core is super solid.

  • I normally do not play games on my phone, but I got drawn into Monument Valley by the art. I decided to stay because the puzzles, while never really reaching that high of a difficulty level, were still fun to solve a few at a time whenever I had a minute to mess with my phone. I have not gotten to Forgotten Shores, but I plan to play it eventually.

  • The best turn based combat the JRPG genre has seen in quite some time matched with one of the coolest job systems I have messed with. Basically a Final Fantasy game in everything but name, it gives us hope that that franchise can one day return to form. Would be way higher up this list if the bad reputation the last few chapters have stopped me from playing right before that part began. I still have had 35-40 hours of fun with Bravely Default and plan to finish it, and I still look forward to Bravely Second.

  • Removing the need for a bunch of controllers and replacing them with anything with a web browser was a stroke of genius, and means that these games can be played by pretty much anyone. Sure, Lie Swatter may miss the mark, but YDKJ, Fibbage XL, and Drawful have been among the most fun I had with local multiplayer games in a year where that style of game made a huge resurgence.
