Slippy: Best of 2009

  • Without a doubt, the finest game i've played all generation. Awesome, unforgiving gameplay that's as addictive as crack. The online community is second to none and I don't think it would be half the game it is without it. Believe the hype - this is incredible.

  • Had Demon's Souls not existed this would have been my pick. I was so convinced after doing a marathon 8 hour session that this was the GOTY, and it wasn't without good reason. I can tell a truly intelligent and talented team produced this game. It doesn't even matter that the graphics are among the best on PS3; its writing and character are strong enough to carry it through to its conclusion.

  • I still have mixed feelings about this, but it's hard not to be impressed every time you see it in motion. THE best looking game on consoles. Not even U2 can touch it in my opinion. Most of my time went into the multiplayer which I felt was handled exceptionally well. While it wasn't all there on release, a matter of months saw a bevy of patches and DLC support which made it much better by the end. The search function to find 16-player games saved it from being a clusterfuck.

  • Euro-man here, so we only got this in mid-2009. Demon's Souls just about beat this as RPG of the year (everyone must be hating on From right now for stealing their thunder), but I still had a lot of fun playing this and was intrigued by the story. I'd never played a Megaten game before but now I feel obliged to track down the rest of the series. And i've never even watched the Endurance Run.

  • I love action games, and I still believe Ninja Gaiden Black is the best the genre has to offer (Bayonetta not considered). As a sequel this was excellent; as a port, it was phenomenal. The effort Team Ninja put into this in terms of new content was astounding. A solid technical improvement over the 360 release too.

  • Total surprise, I thought it was going to be awful but instead it turned into a pretty well rounded package - brings the DC world to life, has all the big names of the cartoon behind it and looks great. Stoked for the sequel now.

  • I owned Monster Hunter Freedom 2 before and sold it to get this expansion... and what an expansion it is! I have not played much, but everything I have has been new content. I have heard that you can get several hundred hours out of it so perhaps this will be my '2010 game of 2009'. The thing I love so much about this franchise is that it makes you feel like a hunter gatherer, but in that quirky Capcom way that thankfully wasn't left to die in the 90s.

  • FIrst of all, I got this free, so that MAY affect my judgement. Say what you will about its lack of career mode, I am enjoying it a lot. The best thing you can do is accept the career's omission and find other objectives. For example, the game is now a car collectathon for me. I spend hours just buying new cars living in the hope of having all 800. It's basically a replacement for 100% completion which I don't mind at all. And I should mention how awesome the graphics look on a Go screen.

  • I felt I needed a downloadable game in the list, so here it is. It was either this or Flower. While I think Flower is a very well made game, this had me hooked for weeks. It's like a kooky new-gen Tetris with physics, so you can see why I got addicted. Not the most attractive looking game, and built on all sorts of crazy and at times broken rules, but I still love it. It would be great if they did a PSP Mini version.
