Paid membership update: the basics and a video test

It should come as little surprise to most of you that the engineering team here has been working on a paid membership product for Whiskey Media over the last couple of weeks. While I'm gonna wait for each of the sites to make formal announcements about what it includes I figured we're far enough along at this point to start talking roughly about our plan and get some feedback from everyone. I'll be releasing more details over the next couple weeks as we adjust with your feedback.

First, why are we doing this?

It's easier for us to build towards what our users want, than what random visitors off Google require. We can either build a better product than our competitors and rely on our small, hardcore userbase to partially support us (that's right, you're now a pie slice!), or we can go for quantity as a content farm and build everybody-eats-it-but-nobody-likes-it web sites like our competitors. We like being able to be proud of our work, so door number one it is!

What am I going to lose if I don't buy any of this?

Sorry, you must be thinking about someone else. We're in the not pissing off the Internet business. The site as you see it right now will remain largely unchanged.

What's this about unified Whiskey Media accounts?

First off, we're going to create a unified Whiskey Media account system tied to your email that will work on any of our sites. You don't need to pay for that, everyone will just get it for free on day one after jumping through a couple account-linking hoops. Yes, you'll be able to retain different usernames across sites, but you'll only be able to link one account per site to your umbrella email account. If you end up deciding to upgrade to a paid account you'll earn the benefits across the entire network so no worries about us trying to make you pay more than once.

 The mobile version.
 The mobile version.
Dude, just give me some details already.

OK, so it wasn't hard to figure out the nuts and bolts stuff  you guys wanted... HD Video, mobile / iPad support and no ads. Fine. Done. So without further ado lets list out the first 3 confirmed features...

  • Stream and Download HD Video at 720p (we shoot and receive most source material in 720, 1080 would just be upscale). Here are a couple tests, let me know how they look (Wargames, Portal 2). We plan on doing this for our entire back catalog, but obviously the newer stuff will look better.
  • A completely redesigned mobile site built in HTML 5 with video-watching, commenting and profiles built into it from the start. It will work on any smartphone with a web browser (iphone, android...etc). The site will continue to work as is for everyone else. Our iPhone app from last year is still free.
  • No ads (if you go for yearly billing). Sorry but we need to be able to make reasonable guesses against our ad inventory, and we can't do that unless we know for sure what portion of our audience is in it for the long haul.

Dude, that's it?

Nope, not even the start. That's just the stuff you could have guessed. I'll talk about the rest in the next couple weeks and I'm sure the various editorial teams will start talking about this stuff pretty soon. For now I just wanted to say... yes, this is a thing, it's happening in September and don't worry, we're trying to be smart about all this.

 Unified accounts are free.
 Unified accounts are free.
What definitely won't be in the plan?

  • Paid message boards. I just don't like segregating audiences.
  • Anything that involves the wiki. Sorry, that's something we all built together and I couldn't ask anyone to pay for premium access or features there. We'll be rebuilding/redesigning all our wiki and API tools quite soon, but that has nothing to do with this. As far as the wiki goes, everyone is equal.
  • Calendars of anime chicks?
  • Free games from five years ago?
  • Any sort of in-your-face hard sell. I've got the feeling most of you just want to support us and could care less about the features. That's great, we'll respect you back in the same way with not trying to do anything stupid when it comes to convincing you to make that decision.

What will this cost?

We're still figuring that out.  If I mentioned anything that wasn't concrete I think our BizDev guy might have a heart attack. I can say there will be a monthly and yearly option. Along with no ads we're considering giving T-Shirts to anyone who signs up for the yearly plan. Does that sound like a good idea, what would you want to see on the T-Shirt? We'd likely have to add $10 to anyone outside the US to pay for shipping if we end up going that route.

Will you support paypal?

Right now we're thinking about going only with credit / debit card processing. If there is wild outrage that paypal isn't an option I'd like to hear it.

Duder, I've got an idea!

I'd love to hear it. Let us know what you think below.

So how will the podcast splitting work with iTunes? Will members have to download it from the site? That's a real turn off.

A feature I'd like to see for the paid memberships would be separate video download feeds for each type of Giant Bomb video. For example a rss feed for all the quick look videos, one for endurance run videos, one for reviews, one for TANG, etc.

Splitting up the Bombcast (yes, that's what you're doing) is a bad idea. You're basically extorting people to pay to hear what you're going to offer for free a week later. How does that make sense and how is that justified? Either make the entire Bombcast a premium service or leave it alone and find other features/perks/bonuses to fill its place. But $50 a year just to be "privileged" to hear an extra hour each week when for over TWO YEARS it's been free and accessible to everyone and now all of a sudden you're throwing up the "cost of production" as an excuse? C'mon. That's just straight up wrong. What about the last two years? How were you guys getting along all that time and now it's an issue?

I was going to pay for the membership anyways but, no splitting the bombcast please!  Add video feed for paid members in return. Splitting the community like this isn't a good idea.

The Persona 4 Endurance Run shirts are amazing, and have been since their inception. I don't know how "licensing" would work for forum people, but I hope they make an effort.

And yes, I get that they're somewhat sick of their own creation, but sorry guys, we love it, and we want more of it.

The splitting of the Bombcast is a terrible idea. That is not what I expected from a community-driven site like Giant Bomb, and I am disappointed. I understand that the site needs to bring in money, but I feel that this particular change is a step in the entirely wrong direction.

I very much disagree with the splitting of the Bombcast. They are going about this very much in the wrong way.

This may have already been mentioned, and it may sound stupid, but exclusive parties would be fucking rad. I know it sounds pathetic, but just the opportunity for us to hang out at events (like a PAX or whatever else there is) and have paid members be able to get 1 on 1 time with the crew or whoever would be cool.

@snide: I want some merchandise options.  The store that is set up right now for GiantBomb is terrible.  If paying for a membership means I can buy a shirt or two and get some extra perks while I'm at it, I'm sold.

@TheHBK: so what's the difference between Credit Card and PayPal? PayPal charges the seller between 1.9% and 2.9%. If you as a business want to accept Credit Card you usually have to pay between 2.5% and 8% for a normal business (depending on volume) and go as high as 20% for things like porn sites. Plus often there's a fixed monthly fee. In that respect PayPal comes quite cheap to a seller. By the way, mobile network operators charge up to 50% for Premium SMS (where you text something like "RING1" to a shortcode like 55555 and receive some ringtone or something).

No offense to the whiskey mead team, but i do not trust you/your system with my credit card information.
Google Checkout or Paypal are the way to go imho, otherwise no purchase from me.

For me it comes down to the simple fact that these big companies spend millions of dollars setting up systems to keep our personal details secure. There is no way Whiskey Media has those sort of resources.

What do you other people think?

Some opinions/ideas:

How about an almost-fully customizable profile page?  For instance [giantbomb,screened,tested,etc].com/profile/jessej07/ could be a page that I can set up however I want.  It could have the usual parent-site header at the top but below that it could be a regular blog-type setup, achievement tracker, Twitter update thingy, or standard usual feed.

I'd prefer to pay in PayPal, but it's not a deal breaker.

Ah... that's my initial reaction.  I'm excited for the Whiskey Media crew, Screened and GB have become a staple in my surfing habits.

Pirates.  Your iPhone app was stolen.  I think even now people can download the vids proper by doing a .flv thing...

Is this going to be an issue you've thought about?  I for one have already allotted 1,786$ to the support giant bomb cause, so you don't have to worry about me leaking gigs and gigs of your awesomeness...

Anyone opposing to this, quite frankly put, I feel, is an ass.

For the amount of meaningful content coming out of the Whiskey Media sites, I think payment should be a bit more forced actually.

Its an optional thing. If you don't pay, your life doesnt change. The sites you've been using all the while, they're still there. If you pay though, you got a tiny little extra which I feel isn't a huge problem.

Its a Win-Win situation either way.

I'm surprised how many people are opposed to this idea. One of the arguments I've seen is that Whiskey Media should only be earning money from advertising but I don't think anyone should hold it against you for giving people the option to support the site through a subscription. I want to support Giant Bomb and I don't think the site can grow through advertising alone. What's the teams stance on this?

I'm not sure how the iPad actually handles websites compared to the iPhone, but when the mobile site rolls around, if you subscribe, would the iPad default to the mobile version or the normal version of the site? Better yet, will there simply be a button that you can click on to swap between the normal or mobile versions of the site, depending on what device you're using? (like how if you go on Twitter.com on an iPhone or whatever).

I only ask because navigating around the normal site as it is works fine for the iPad (aside from the issue of not being able to post in comments or the forums because of the way it handles the text box), and I imagine that stretching a lot of the mobile site to a larger screen could create a lot of blank space. Of course I have no idea how any of this stuff works, so I could be completely wrong, but I figured I'd ask.

Overall, I can definitely see myself subscribing to the site. You guys do a phenomenal job around here with thw way everything works and the content you produce, and I'll be glad to help in any way possible. As long as you can pick what size shirt to get and not get shafted with an XL, as a few others have said.

@BadNews: I'm literally building all the cancel / update billing stuff right now. Don't worry, I've paid for enough shit online to know how to be smart about it. Seriously, I don't know why people hide that stuff. You should spend your time trying to make sure people don't want to look for it, rather than worry about how people will find it.
