Uncharted staring Max Payne?

The MTV Multiplayer blog has confirmed rumors that Mark Wahlberg will be starring in the new "Uncharted" movie. The "Uncharted" movie has long been tossed about the rumor mill. It was confirmed by Mr. Wahlberg that Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro will also be appearing in the movie. The cast looks to be shaping up to be filled with action movie veterans, but they also can explore their characters and environments.

Never having seen "Max Payne" I cannot comment on how Mr. Wahlberg embodied that character, but I do think that he usually does a good job with the characters he mimics. Like most people who are into nerd culture, I think that Nathan Fillion would have been more well suited for the roll. I'm pretty sure that Mark Wahlberg is about a foot shorter than the character of Nathan Drake.

This will be a good opporotunity for the studio to try to capture on film, a story that was already great as a videogame. Hopefully, Wahlberg won't become the Uwe Boll of acting. I think that he will bring the same energy and swagger to the screen in his role as Nathan Drake, as he did to his rolls in "Three Kings" and "The Departed."

A Beautiful Journey

While fighting off cougars in the mountains near the boarder, my thousand dollar horse was mauled. After falling halfway down the mountain I recovered with enough time to take some medicine. The smell of wonded flesh was still in the air. The gods of stupidity took over and I pulled out my lasso. I tried to subdue the cougar with my lasso, but I was slashed in the face by knives sharper than katanas. I pulled out my knife in an attempt to gain some kind of "achievement!" I wanted my accoplishment to be heard around the world...

or at least on the internet.

This is just one of the many stories that we all can tell about playing Red Dead Redemption. Most of Rockstars open world games carry this same type of make your own story gameplay. I have been thwarted by Rockstars open world elements before, but this time I have been so immersed that I have had no problem finishing the game. I am nearing the 75% mark and I see no end in sight.

The grit and the grime in the game are almost tangible. When I see the characters I can see that they are dirty, many of them in more than one way. The stories that they tell are dirty and grimy. People were driven crazy by the Plains. As a student of the Mid-west, I know these types of stories to be true. I also realized that these types of stories are not contained within the narrative timeline of RDR. These stories continue to plague our news stories; I don't have to name any  because we see them everyday online or in print.

The inane is just as fun as the outlandish, as well. I spend the better part of last night looking for Butterfly Weed in Mexico. I know that I could have used the survivalist map, but I wanted to explore and do it for myself. It is for these reasons that I have enjoyed playing RDR so much.

This shouldn't be viewed as a review but more as a mid-game commentary.

A small accomplishment.

I've played through three demos in the last two days and this has given me a false sense of accomplishment. I haven't been finishing many games lately. And, those games that I have finished left me with an empty feeling (ex: 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand). I played Enslaved the other day and was really taken with the game mechanics and story of that game. Last night I played through the Darksiders demo, which was really long. I really felt a sense of accomplishment after my one hour playthrough of Darksiders. Finally, I just finished the new Castlevania demo on PS3. I found this game pretty bland.

After playing trough Darksiders, Dante's Inferno, and the new Castlevania demo on PS3, I have realized that this GoW apeing is getting a little out of control. I think that this style change is a good restart for the 3D Castlevania franchise. But, because I am playing Dante's and GoW on PS3 this new Castlevania just seemed like a bland copy. I think that this reboot is much better than the other 3D incarnations of Castlevania.

Playing these demos has given me that same feeling of satisfaction when I finish a full game. Its nice to finish something, no matter how small.

I just finished the Darksiders demo...

and it was really good. I didn't really pay much attention to the story, there was too little to mention. I don't know if this is true of the main game or just the demo. I know that we have one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse and he is killing other demons. The demon at the end of the demo tries to buy him off, but “we ain't havin' that.” Even with the unmentionable story the game was very likable.

The art of the game is more metal than apocalyptic. The monsters look really good and the main character looks really cool. The environments are pretty demented, but they are really colorful. The game shares a color palette with God of War; life is green, magic is yellow, and there are some blue ones that buy more powerful weapons from the "demon" store.

The most striking thing about this game is the bosses. Much like God of War, there are many run-of-the-mill enemies that feel and act like bosses. Unlike GoW, the bosses, or mini-bosses, are in pretty linear order from smaller to larger. GoW usually gives you a ridiculously huge boss right away. Then gives you will battle bosses or mini-bosses of varying sizes for the rest of the game. I think the formula that GoW has set out is cool because it gives you that feeling of being the most brutal, violent, and bad-ass of motherfuckers right away. I don't think there is anything wrong with Darksiders presentation. I think it would actually be bad if they tried to ape GoW to this extent. There is nothing wrong with linear progression if it is presented well.

But my favorite thing about this game is that it does not need to use Quick Time Events. It wasn't until playing this game that I truly realized that I hated QTEs. When I went up against my first mini-boss and the [O] icon popped up over the monster's head, I was sure I knew what was going to happen. I pressed the button and the cinema started and I kept waiting for the icons to appear, but they never came. They NEVER came! After I overcame the shock of the situation, I realized that I have been conditioned to accepting QTEs. It wasn't until the last boss that I realized if a boss is strong and difficult to beat it doesn't matter if there is a QTE. The QTE is just a tangible way to feel like you kicked ass. But, if I play a challenging boss and afterwards a small movie plays showing the conclusion of the fight, I feel like just as much of a bad-ass. I would rather do this than have an awkward QTE event that I might screw up a few times before getting it right. It's time developers realize they don't have to copy everything that GoW does if they want to make a good action game. Take the stuff that works, and fill in the rest.

I liked this demo. It was incredibly long. It took me over an hour to play through the whole thing. I will probably end up buying the whole game. If any of you liked it or didn't like it give me a comment telling me why you did or did not like the game or the demo.

Reviews need something different.

Reading videogame magazines and websites leads one to believe that they are made for people with too many holes in their heads. Recently we have started to get some very quality work out of our videogame enthusiast press. I think that Gamepro under John Davison was really starting to head in the right direction. Bitmob.com  from Dan Hsu and crew also has a really great format to it. Giantbomb.com, we all know, is also doing so many new and creative things.

I think that traditional review need something new. I don't believe that traditional reviews should go away. Many people read these reviews and use them for great purpose, but they can also be used for nefarious reasons as well. (see: metacritic.com and how game companies use meta scores to make buisness decisions) I think that we need a new way of reviewing games, and not only from private bloggers, but from large websites and from the few magazines who are struggling for life support.

I have just the thing. It isn't revolutionary, but it is new. It will make you think about games in different ways. It will make me think about games in different ways. Thinking about games differently will help change how we all approach games. I hope that you will do what you can to help change how we think about games too.

Tokyo Game Show is gonna be blown out.

I have been in Japan for 3 years now. I have wanted to go to TGS since I arrived in Japan. This will be my first trip to TGS, and I am really excited about it for a couple of reasons. I have made all of the steps in my life that I have set out for my self. I have come to Japan. I have learned some Japanese (I need to learn more). I have had some articles published about video games. I now need to make the final steps to becoming a video game journalist. I am also really excited about a few games that are going to be at TGS, because, in Japan, Japanese people don't have to worry about any stigmas that pertain to religion; at least not as much as in the US. For this reason, I am really excited to see El Shaddai. This seems like a really unique idea and an idea that is after my own heart.

In two days I will be walking the streets of Tokyo for the first time in almost 18 months. I am so excited about TGS and the possibility to meet some people from the industry. I also have a small shopping list of games that I need to hunt for in Akihabara. I really think that this trip to Tokyo is going to be very fruitful for my career and my game collection. I will stop by at a few local shrines and throw my 5 yen down to see if the gods will bless this trip and bless me with prosperity in the future. If not, hopefully they can just bless me with some good food, good drinks and some good random that likes cute nerdy fat guys. For this kind of event, I'm gonna have to work harder than usual.
