Sony steps into free-to-play with PS+

Boom!
Boom!

I just downloaded the one hour demo of Need for Speed: Most Wanted from PSN and some would even say that I am just renting the game. I play $50 a year for PS+ like the rest of the hungry masses. I know that all of my $50 doesn't go only to demoing games, I get a lot of great games that I can play through to completion. Recently, with that $50 a year, I have been getting games like Payday: The Heist, Blitz, King of Fighters XIII, and Gotham City Impostors. Games that I wouldn't have gotten if it wasn't for PS+.

It was the last one of those games that really got me thinking about this free-to-play model that Sony has going for it. When I downloaded Gotham City Impostors it was going free-to-play on PC and around that same time PS+ had a free download of the game too. I had been wanting to play the game for a while so I got into it one weekend and I ended up playing it a lot. So much so that I started to buy XP boosters to unlock the weapons and gadgets that the other players had already unlocked. I realized, after my PSN Wallet had reached 56 cents, that I had spent around $30 on those boosters. I had another realization that, when I always whispered to myself I would never be one of those people who payed for boosters, I had been caught; hook, line, and sinker.

I am happy about the $30+ dollars that I spent in-game. I had a great time paying that game. I am glad that I could support Monolith in that way. But, I am starting to see this further pushed out into bigger games. I am still waiting on the download of Need for Speed: Most Wanted, but I can see myself buying this game after I play an hour demo. I love Criterion and I haven't played a "real" Need for Speed game since the first Underground on PS2. I did play Shift (once again, through PS+), but I am glad I didn't buy it because the driving in that was way too squirrelly, even with all of the assists turned off, for me. With Criterion on their game, I could really see myself getting into this game.

With these two services working in tandem, I think we are seeing an all new Sony. A Sony that is quietly positioning themselves as the kings of Service, which, I think most people will agree, is going to be the main fighting ground of the next console war.

Since PS+ was announced at E3 in 2010, the service has been making all of the right movies to position itself as "The" premium service among it's competitors. I really believe that it has done this handedly. Alas, it is too late in the game to prove itself as the top dog of this generation, but with the new roll-out of the PS Store and some of the decisions that Sony has been making with it's PS+ program I can see that Sony is preparing for the next console war that will be disc-less, utilizing more of "the cloud," and integrated through services like PS+.

@kmg90: I'm not sure why your thread got locked. It seems pretty sound to me.

I also don't think anybody has belittled you yet. Except the first dude on your thread that asked if you were serious, he might have been...a little. I think the big problem is that most people aren't going to fiddle around with their network settings just to get this problem fixed. Most of the people who have this problem also took 4 or 5 hours to set up their Wi-Fi router.

The crux of the situation is P.R. Microsoft's stuff downloads fast for most people, while PS3's downloads slow for most people. For people with two systems, it is easy for us to understand because both the systems use the same internet, but one is faster than the other when we download demos or games.

I would send your research to Sony and show them what is going on. I'm sure it is easier for them to fix than asking people who don't even know what a DNS server is to set one up.

I am still fascinated that people have speed issues with PSN, when its not Sony's problem*, its the end users (ISP) DNS servers that point to overloaded, far away CDNs..

I just downloaded Resident Evil 5 Gold in 45 mins

* Yes I know that thread is locked, but over 3 years of networking experience has pinpointed the problem to DNS servers... and I don't appreciate my experience and knowledge belittled before someone actually tries my instructions in the thread

Why is Xbox live more consistent with speed? Well when you have a backbone of CDNs built up for the millions of PCs, Applications and services that Microsoft has developed over the past 15 years(Windows Update, MSN etc.) you tend to build a infrastructure with a lot of edge servers

Sadly I'm at a point my life where free* games aren't such a good deal anymore. Got more money than time.

Tell me about it. I have Assassin's Creed 3, Halo 4 showing up today, books I need to read and I have time for none of it!

@WarlordPayne: I agree with you. There are some people who would argue that because we pay $50 a year for PS+ we are playing for the demos. I have edited the text to better explain that thought.

I wouldn't really call the 60 minute demos "renting." It's not possible to complete the games, you get 60 minutes of playtime and that's it, it's a great demo but it's just a demo.

Sony has also been dabbling in free to play for a long time, well before playstation plus, they didn't seem terrified of it like Microsoft was.

That said, I wholeheartedly agree that PS+ is an incredible service. I used to pay for Gold for the online multiplayer and the sales, but now that I've got a functional PS3 again it's Playstation Plus all the way.

I had rather extreme issues concerning download speed from the PSN as well, until I stumbled upon a certain thread on this very board.

Long story short: Ever since I began running Privoxy on my PC and run my PS3 "through it" I download at full-speed. All the time. Good stuff.

PS+ is great, especially since they started the game collection around this years e3. However, they really need to do something about the way they throttle download speeds. Especially since they want to do all of these Day 1 downloads.

Yes, PS+ is awesome if you're not one of the unfortunate PS3 owners who get super-slow download speeds on PSN. Took me two days to download Just Cause 2. Xbox Live downloads are much quicker for me, but I stopped paying $60 a year just to play online. Don't get me wrong, I love both of my consoles, but it's frustrating. I don't really have any complaints for Steam.

I have heard the same thing from my friends in the US. I live in Japan and have a 200 Mbps Internet connection. I just downloaded Most Wanted and it took a little over an hour. I can't really complain.

I also love PSN and am glad Sony had that hacking issue a while back which caused them to step up their online game to save face. Kudos to them for during things around.

I never had an issue with speed on PSN but I hear a lot of people complain about it. I live in Canada and maybe my location doesn't have a lot of people ramming the servers...I dunno.

@BraveToaster: I know what you are saying. I have been contemplating XBL for awhile now. I really want to lose my Gold, but I am always playing online on Xbox. I wish they offered more for the $60.

Word to this post.

True it's a case of too little too late, but it's good to know finally that yes Sony can have a great program. Exciting to look ahead and see how close/awesome the services will be across Steam/Live/PSN.. uh, eShop?
