@Zidd: I'm not seeing a lot of information about what happens to AirPlay when the screen locks and, unfortunately, I don't have an Apple TV to test with. That said, I'd be happy to look into it as best I can. Can you let me know what model iPad and Apple TV you're using? I've also seen some reports that if you manually turn off the screen instead of letting it time out then the video will keep playing. Would you mind trying that?

@Hooded: Adding an option to lock rotation has been on my to-do list. I'll see if I can get it into the next release.

@sleeping143: Would you mind providing a few more details? Stuff that would be helpful would be:

  • What device you're using
  • How it's failing (Is there an error message? Does it try to load for a while or just fail instantly? etc)
  • What quality you're trying to play and if other quality settings fail as well
  • One or two specific videos that are failing

@hermes: This is regarding the Android version, correct? If so, you can view a list of downloaded video from the main menu by pressing your phone's menu button and select "Downloaded Videos". From there you can play or delete anything you've downloaded.

@Hooded: Thanks! I'm working on an update that will bring, among other things, a new icon. I'm hoping to be able to send it off for approval in the next couple of days.

Thanks, everyone! I love getting feedback.

Regarding future plans, the number one thing I'd like to add is the ability to download videos. I have some ideas for how to go about it, but it's a non-trivial task and will likely take some time. Adding thumbnails is also on my to-do list, though it's a lower priority than downloads. That said, I may end up tackling it first since it should be substantially easier.

@Niall_Sg1: I found the bug that was preventing HD playback and have submitted an update. Thanks for reporting the issue!

@ShaunassNZ: It's been on my mind to change the icon to incorporate the Whiskey Media logo to sort of match the Android version, so I'm probably going to give that a go with the next release. I definitely appreciate your offer though!

@sirchode: That's a lot of suggestions! No promises, but I'll see what I can do.

@fwitness: Your mention of Apple TV caught my eye. This past weekend I released an iOS version of Whiskey Media Video Buddy and it supports AirPlay. It doesn't have the ability to download videos yet, so it wouldn't be a viable replacement for Instacast while away from WiFi, but it should be up to the task of sending video to an Apple TV.

I'm pleased to announce that Whiskey Media Video Buddy is now available for iOS. Previously an Android exclusive, this free app aims to make watching videos from any of the five Whiskey Media sites on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad as convenient as possible. How? I'm glad you asked:

Everyone is able to:

  • Stream all non-member-exclusive videos from each site
  • Save your place in a video and resume from that spot later
  • Send video to AirPlay-capable devices like an Apple TV

Additionally, paid Whiskey Media members can:

  • Access the subscriber-only videos
  • Access HD streams for every video available
  • Download videos to watch later

There are also two limitations I should mention:

You must be running iOS 5.0 or better. This is my first time working with iOS and only targeting the most recent version of the operating system simplified things immensely.

Videos can only be streamed over WiFi. App Store policy effectively requires that Whiskey Media Video Buddy use HTTP Live Streaming when using the cellular network for data and, to the best of my knowledge, Whiskey Media does not currently support HLS. For those interested in details, see section 9.4 of the App Store Review Guidelines and the "Requirements for Apps" section in the "Using HTTP Live Streaming" portion of the HTTP Live Streaming Overview

If you own an iOS device and are a fan of Whiskey Media's video content then I encourage you to head on over to the App Store to check it out. If you have any questions or comments please don't hesitate to drop me a line.

@mrlogical: There are a couple of terms in the developer agreement for Amazon's Appstore that I'm not crazy about (notably the annual fee, since I'm only distributing free apps), so I haven't signed up yet, but maybe I can meet you halfway. I've uploaded the installer for Whiskey Media Video Buddy v1.3.1 here and if you follow Ryan Whitwam's tutorial on Tested you should be in business.

If you do give that a try, please let me know if everything works. I expect it should, but since I don't have access to a Fire I can't say for certain.

@jozzy: Yup. It has a grid-layout on large screens to take advantage of the extra space and will use Honeycomb-style menus if you're running 3.0+

@natetodamax: The process is a little slower than I'd like, but it's the best way to protect the premium content at the moment. If/when a better option opens up I'll implement it, but for now security has to take priority.

@sirchode: Probably not from me. I'm not currently equipped for iOS development and that's unlikely to change any time soon. Sorry.

And thanks to everyone for checking it out!

I'm the developer of Whiskey Media Video Buddy, a free Android app that aims to make watching videos from any of the five Whiskey Media sites as convenient as possible. It was initially released on September 16 and I've continued working on it since then. With last night's release of v1.2 it now contains every major feature I had planned. What are those features? I'm glad you asked...

Everyone is able to:

  • Watch public videos from all 5 Whiskey Media sites
  • Save their position in each video so they can easily resume later

Those with paid Whiskey Media memberships also get to:

  • Watch the subscriber-only videos
  • Access the HD version of each video
  • Download videos for convenient offline viewing

Since the major development work is done I thought now would be a good time to try to spread the word, so I'm posting threads in the forums for each Whiskey site. There's been a thread on the Tested forums for a while so you can pop over there if you're interested in seeing more details about each release. Better yet, you should head on over to the Android Market so you can try out Whiskey Media Video Buddy for yourself!

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to post a reply, PM me, send me an email, tweet at @cszucko, or hit me up any other way you can think of.

@iam3green: Thanks for the feedback!  It's been a fun project to work on and I'm hoping some other gamers out there can get some use out of it.

@EnchantedEcho:  I'm really glad to hear it's working for other regions.  I didn't see any reason why it wouldn't, but without a foreign account to test with I couldn't be 100% sure.   Thanks for the offer of a review too!

@ProjectMayhem:

No offense taken.  You don't know me from Adam and, for better or worse, Android's lack of oversight on their app market would totally let me do nefarious things.  For what it's worth, I'm willing to state on record that the only things I do with the login information are store it, encrypted, on the phone, and transmit it to xbox.com.  You can still browse and search the Marketplace without signing in though, so you could also use the app just to check out the Deal of the Week or New Releases.

As to the single post, I've been reading the site and listening to the Bombcast for awhile, but I'm not much of a forums guy so I never registered.  Giant Bomb just seemed like a good way to try to get the word out about my app.  I do appreciate you voicing your concern.

xMarket
xMarket

xWhat?

xMarket is an Android app I've been working on for the past few months.  With it you can access the Xbox Live Marketplace right from your Android phone (provided your phone is running at least Android 2.2, aka Froyo).

What can it do?

The major features are:
  • Browse the Marketplace by title, release date, rating, or number of downloads
  • Search the Marketplace
  • Check out the current Deal of the Week
  • View and modify your download queue
  • Check your MS Points balance
  • Redeem prepaid cards
All features should work for all Xbox Live regions, though testing for regions other than the good ol' US of A has been limited.  If you're an international user I'd love to hear what does and doesn't work.

If you'd like to give the app a try (and I hope you do), you can head on over to the Android Market and search for "xMarket" or just use the QR code up in the corner.  It's available for the low-low price of zero dollars.

Finally, if you've got any questions or comments I'd be happy to address them.
