Questions to ask yourself while playing.

I found these on Gootecks.com that he wrote about what to think about while playing. I never really thought some of these things and Im hoping to start doing so. I really want to take my game further and this just might be the thing I need.

Offense

  • If this move hits, what will I do after?
  • If this move misses, what kind of damage will I take (or where will it leave me on the screen)?
  • How can this move be evaded?
  • If this move blocks, what can they punish with?  Did they punish it last time or is this the first time I’ve shown it to them?

Defense

  • What move are they most likely to throw out right now (taking into consideration their lifebar, the range you are at, the character they’re playing, etc.)?
  • What move, if any, can I punish with if I block?
  • What are they most likely to follow up with if this move hits me?
  • What are they most likely to follow up with afterwards?
  • Is it better to block or try to counter?

Wakeup

  • What is the risk of blocking?
  • What is the risk of doing a wakeup move (such as Shoryuken, Flash Kick, etc.)?
  • Did they attack me last time?
  • How likely are they to throw?

My trip to Gearbox to play Borderlands.

I would of wrote this a month ago but I had to sign some papers saying I wouldn't talk till today. So ya, Im writing this at midnight so I could write this asap. Also im putting this in General discussion because it covers more than just the game.

Last month I was one of the lucky two to win the contest held here on the big Bomb. It was really the first only contest I had won. Good thing I live 30 minutes away from Gearbox's studio.

Look were im at!
Look were im at!

I arrived about 25 minutes early at the studio located at the Bank of America building in Plano, Texas. Walking in I noticed another man standing with a cameria and was messing with his phone. I asked him if he was there for the play session and he was. We started talking about the game and what other games we had been playing recently. Turns out he was from Shacknews.con and was one of 8 people, including myself, that had one contests from different sites. One being Giantbomb, Destructiod, Shacknews, and the Gearbox forums.

At around 4 Steve from Gearbox came down and showed us to the room were we would be playing. It full of three things I love most: Pizza, Soda, and video games. So just walking in I was happy. The other

contest winners had already arrived and were getting ready to play. All of them seemed really excited about the game and were asking

questions even before we started playing. The guy next to me though, a contest winner from Destructiod, was sooo annoying. He kept saying stupid commentative things about the game every 5 sec. Man that guy was annoying.

Anyways, on to the game. To start out bluntly, Borderlands is an AWESOME game. From the graphics to the gameplay it feels solid. The way the combat works is engaging and fun, and the quest system, while not anything new, moved quickly and at a fun pace.

You start out with a standard machine gun and handgun. Im not sure if your able to pick from the beginning but we all started out as the character Roland. The soldier of the game with talent tree branching from Medic, Support, and a DPS spec. He has the ability to send out a turret that do many things from heal to supply ammo.

Other playable classes/characters include.

  •    Mordecai- The hunter of the group. He's better off with a Sniper rifle. He is, from what I saw, primarily a DPS class.
  • Lilith- The mage of the group. She has a "Phase Walk" that lets her become invisible to enemy and can attack them while in this phase.
  • Brick- The tank of the group. His main role is the take the damage for the group. His ability is to take a TON of damage and deal massive amounts of damage also.

One thing you can do at the beginning is to change the color of your class. While not the biggest feature it was nice to see some customization to a named character.  A little Robot teaches you the basics but Ill let you guys figure out the rest. I dont want to completely ruin it.

Playing alone I got up to level 6 in about 30 minutes. Not bad for leveling compared to other rpgs. The quest system will net you the most xp but killing things will also get you a fair amount of xp. While Im on the topic of killing things. This game is a strong M rating. The first time I did a melee attack the guy's head EXPLODED! It was awesome and this also happens when you get headshot and what not. Now back to the quest system. As I said before it has a nice flow to it. Now there is some running between wave points but thats expected. It has a very WoW feeling to it, but that makes it a good thing cause WoW's quest system is very strong and fun. The loot also is very Diablo-E. It can drop off anyone and anything and I is all seperated by color. How the loot works in multiplayer is Snake loot which means first come first serve. So be quick on getting loot! They did say they would change it if too many people said something about it.

GET OUT OF MY SHOT RANDY!
GET OUT OF MY SHOT RANDY!

At about the hour mark of playing we were asked if we would like a tour from Randy Pitchford himself and other members of the staff. The offices themselves were very casual. Full of action figures and video game merch. Randy's office was the best by far. With old video games everywhere it seemed more like a museum. The other offices were full of people ether working on Borderland or other projects that we were not allowed to see. They were constantly erasing things off of dry boards that they said we were not allowed to

Randy Pitchford gets punked!
Randy Pitchford gets punked!

see. As we walked to the front desk they had a big stack of posters that they had just got in that day. We all got one and they were signed by Randy and other members of the staff. Along with a t-shirt and sticker. (Ill post a large picture of the poster at the end of this blog.) I could of done without the sticker but what-evs it was free. As we were getting our poster signed I noticed that Pitchford had a cloths pin on his back. Like someone was playing a joke on him. I didn't say anything to him because I thought it was funny but someone else said something to him and the cloths pin said Shacknew.com on it. Damn why didnt I thing of that...Anyways we saw their central server and that was only inte    resting because of the gnome that lives in there. Over all it was a nice office.

When we returned we went on to 4 player co-op. I kept on playing Roland because in past games like this one I usually pick the medic. Gameplay moves fast and furious. People are shooting left and right while ammo and loot is falling all over from dudes you kill. The key to the gamplay was to stay together because later in the game the bad guys get really hard to take down. It also doesn't help that there is a bunch of them on screen at a time most of the time. Playing the medic was fun but there was one flaw: the other people wouldn't stay still. How the medic heals is ether A) Throws out his turret and the turret heals people B) When the medic kills someone the gets a ring around him that heals party members C) You shoot your teammates with your gun. That last option is really the only big one because the turret is on a cooldown and you don't kill that many people because of your low damage output. There is a problem with shooting your teammates to heal them is that they dont stay still for very long. That makes shotguns and rocket launchers the better tools for healing. You also cant heal yourself which is a bummer. I told them that though so they might change it.

I could go on forever talking about what I saw and played but ill leave that to questions if anyone has any. So please ask a-way.

Another note: If I have said too much please tell me and Ill delete this. If that doesnt happen then good. This took forever to type.

Here is the poster I got.

Look at the damage! (My top 5 favorite things about Evo 2k9)

Looking back at Evolution 2009 I have to say that it was a supreme event. Better that the Olympics. Better than the X Games. It might have been as well funded or even televised, but still seems like a complete success. I still go back to Ustream and watch all that action and even see stuff I didn't before.

I have come up with my personal favorite moments. Im not talking whole matches but some of them are whole matches. All of these come straight from Ustream bookmarks, lucky me they had all my favorites, so if you click on one of the videos it will link you all of the videos. That being said I would say not to buy the IGN thing. This is free, that is not.

5) "Dan from Japan" (Ryu) vs. Sanford (Cammy) This match just made me say, "Wow, thats some crazy Cammy!" Not only was Sanford's execution solid but also his psychic counters. The crowd also is sheer hype.

 4) The Evo Flowchart Ken

Its always great to see a crappy Ken. Now the Blanka he was fighting wasn't that great either, but whatever it made me laugh.

3) Yeb's Amazing Match

Yeb is one of my favorite Gen players along with JibBo, this match beats out all of the matches JibBo had. The combo for the win in the second round made me want to stand up and cheer.

3) STRAIGHT OF THE MATRIX!

In the match during the 5v5 team match for SF4 there were some great moments but the best for me is during the match before Saber and Alex V. When Saber does a tatsu over Alex's super Dogface gives one of the greatest lines ever. The whole match was great but that moment made me love it even more.

1) LOOK AT THE DAMAGE...oh wait.

Triforce is one of the most annoying people in the fighting game sense. His commentary during the matches was the most annoying of the tourny. Iloveyou Joe hit a ultra on an Akuma player ( i dont remember his name) and Triforce seems to think Joes has it. Next thing you know Joe lost. All because he was being a dumbass. This moment is my favorite because it sure did shut Triforce up, and gives us one of the best quotes of Evo.

Anyone else have any favorite moments? Post video if you can. I want to see them also.

No SF4 scene in North Texas = Me super depressed.

So I was doing some research on the old internet today and found something out. There is absolutely no SF4 scene in North Texas. No arcades have it. No one is hosting tournaments. There arn't people who are just making dates for people to come out and play. All of the Texas scene is ether in Austin or Houston and I don't feel like driving 4 hours just to play for one day.

Now there was a tourny back in June but from what I read it didn't turn out so well cause no one showed up and people had their sticks stolen.

Im really depressed about this people. If anyone can find some sort of information about anything im talking about thats going on in North Texas please let me know. I really don't want to drive.

Better yet if anyone is willing, and lives in the DFW area or is willing to drive, we should host something. I might just have to go to SRK to make this happen.

The decline of the Street Fighter 4 forums.

Ok ive been on these forums sense the game came out. Ive seen its scrub filled days and it really informative days. Recently though its going into it know-it-all asshole stage. Im usually the one to keep his mouth shut but this is gettting out of hand. I finally feel the urge to tell everyone that what Ive been thinking forever now.

Im getting tired of hearing that Ken sucks and that anyone that uses him is a scrub, and Im getting tired of people talking a big talk but not doing anything to prove it.

The first subject is the Ken problem. Im not defending Stang, he is a big boy and can handle himself, but I am telling everyone to let the Ken subject die already. If someone want to play Ken let them. People have no right to tell others who they can and can not play or tell people they are stupid for playing that character. Let it go people. Yes Ken's SRK does have crazy good frame start up but that goes for Ryu's SRK also. The only difference is that Ken's does more damage. I am just like everyone else and dont like getting hit out of my block strings but I am smart enough to learn that it is going to happen and to adapt to it. I will agree with Stang though and say get your links down people. If you are getting hit out of your combos then they are not coming out correctly. Lastly why do people hate Ken so much when Ryu is like Ultima said "easy mode". Ken has to work for his ultra setup unlike Ryu who can wipe his ass and his ultra comes out and hits. This whole Ken thing is getting really stupid and pointless and is killing my brain cells.

If you want to look at characters that need work then your can put the entire cast in there. Every character has a dumb weekness or a seemingly "unfair advantage". For me i hate the hit boxes on certain characters and i think Blanka's ball and electricity is too safe. But i also know that i have other combos i can do on those weird hit boxes and that i can us C. MK to get Blanka out of electricity. Characters have flaws people. This is true for every fighting game period.

Furthermore im seeing a lot of people talking a big talk and not really doing anything about it. Come on people show your skills in the game not your skills at trash talking.  Post some matches, screenshot, photos of your ghetto tvs (like mine), something.

Also, a little off topic, im noticing a lot of Abel players coming out of the wood work on the site. Am i missing something about him? Does he have a crazy secret power that i dont know about?

I dont want to sound like an asshole just a voice of reason. Understand were im coming from people. I love this game and these forums and im not going to let stupid shit stop me from participating in both.

SpecialBuddy vs LordofUltima

Guess this one was coming sooner or later. We had some matches last night and to say the least they were interesting. Not the best showing from both of us expecially me. My combo execution was off the whole time but oh well.

There were 19 videos i pulled from over 2 hours of footage i took. The ones i uploaded though were the best in my opinion to show the different mixups and combos we both use. I would suggest watching as many of them as you can cause there is some great ones in there.

Tthe Sagat vs Akuma match about half way in is pretty good. Ultima pulls some crazy mixup that blew my mind.

Gen combos (and one mixup)

So ive been meaning to do a Gen combo video for a while now. I finally found some time to do it so here it is. I choose Guile to beat up on cause hes a punk and pink Gen is awesome. I use these combos in different situations but dont really feel like going into detail so ill just leave it up to everyone else to figure out. :P I didnt hit all the hits for the dragon kick but you should get the picture.

Also im not all that great at Gens mixups yet so i only knew one that was worth anything. I threw it in at the end of the video along with the worlds longest taunt!

Gen why do you have to be so crazy?

As the only Gen player who is active on the forums I try to look for all sorts of combos that I can use. Gen does have some crazy combos that require stance changes just for one attack sometimes.

But there is one combo that I have tried to pull off which is S.MK-->Hands but decided to forget trying to learn cause of one thing: It requires me to wear a glove. It requires you to press MK then quickly slide your fingers to input exactly 5 inputs ending with a HP input. This is required cause after doing it once you can do the combo again with strick timing. What makes it even more frustrating is that this is considered one of Gens B.N.B combos. Yes I know this sounds crazy but if you dont wear the glove it can tear up your fingers pulling it off. It does have a piano style but that is more complecated.

Here is a video of what im talking about:

But this what could happen if the combo is done correctly and in the right moment. You will see what i mean at about 1:05 but the whole match is good:
