Top n games of 2017

Ideally a living list of my favorite games of 2017. Hopefully this will help me keep track and remember why these games are awesome.

List items

  • Huh. It's been awhile since Giant Bomb inspired me to sprint through a video game franchise (looking at you MGS / Persona), but man I LOVED this game. Slight correction from persona 5 below, this game kept that dumb smile on my face long after I finished it!

  • I finished this one! No game has kept as big a dumb smile on my face as Persona 5. Just hearing the almost any track from the OST brings back wonderful memories. Despite all of it's many many issues, no other game has made me this happy in a long time.

  • What an awesome experience so far. Very few games have ever had my mind racing with possibilities whenever I get an upgrade. The music, the art, the feel. This game is a wonder start to finish.

  • I finished this one! Horizon is very cool. The story fascinated me, gameplay was incredible, all of the sidequests I played were very interesting.

  • Specifically War of the Chosen. Really puling me back in, very much enjoying this game.

  • Definitely alot of great moments! Will add more later

  • Combination of a VN and a sports game. Really great so far, only a few hours in however.

  • Liked this alot more than I thought I would. The side missions regarding the effects of beacon were great!

  • Haven't finished yet, only 3 hours in. Loving it so far though.

(edit) Made it to the Margeurite fight. So far this game is very good at maintaining high levels of tension, slowing things down for a moment, and then immediately seizing upon that reprieve with an encounter.

  • Probably about 20 hours in. Loving it so far, I have always played Fire Emblem as my "fun time sink while doing something else", but this is the first in the series I have wanted to give my full attention to. Writing is pretty great, VO is excellent, digging this game alot.

  • Only an hour or so in, but so far it seems awesome.

  • About 12 hours in, still on the 2B route. Still waiting for it to turn.

  • Been awhile since a game made me cry. Angus and Bea both really spoke to me on a level most games have never even touched. That said, I found the main plot ending very souring, and the experience as a whole was very uneven.

  • First game in ages I have pre-ordered. Excited to play this one!

(edit) Having completed it, I almost see why people said to play Y0 last. Very cool as a way of preserving the history of the series, but the story / gameplay / music / writing felt much worse than 0. Still an interesting ride, but it definitely wears its "2005"ness on its sleeve.

  • Picked this up in the sale, haven't touched it yet!

  • Story mode is very fun, gameplay is very fun!

  • Rating fighting games is hard. They will all sit at the end of the list for now.

  • Surprisingly fun! While it's not the next Rocket League, Disc Jam has been an extremely fun game to play with my girlfriend.

  • An incredibly weird experience.

  • Huh this comes out fully this year. Here it goes!

  • Played the first two hours and didn't really like what I saw. I'll come back to it once the rest of my library thins out.

  • Having been a very competitive UMVC3 player (made it out of my pools at Evo 2016), this game was just never going to click with me. Despite all of it's flaws, I always had a really great time with UMVC3, but I am finding this game to be much more of a bore. A real bummer for myself, but I am happy others seem to enjoy it!

  • I really hated this game and the fact I accidentally subbed to EA Play for 4 months.
