Platforms: The Past

Platforms I used to own.

List items

  • My first system and the beginning of video games as far as I'm concerned. Came bundled with Zapper (nintendo gun) and Duck Hunter for awesomeness in a box. Also enjoyed Mario games.

  • Sega Genesis was my second, and perhaps greatest, platform ever. Though the Playstation later stole all the glory, the Genesis will always be home to Sonic, Phantasy Star, Ristar, and so much more. Endless hours of entertainment and bewonderment.

  • In the twilight of its life, this add-on to the Sega Genesis provided me with two main game memories: some Knuckles game in the Sonic series and a game about hummingbirds. Yes, I said hummingbirds. So yeah, this platform mostly fell flat. Oh, and Sonic 3-D -- but let's not go there! I think I spent more time cleaning it and trying to get it to work than playing it. Did my parents really spend $100+ on this? Hope not! Hopefully my joy later on at the Playstation made up for the disappointing investment in the 32X.

  • I took the lessons I learned with Genesis and applied them to Playstation. I'll never forget that first Christmas morning with my Playstation spent playing Beyond the Beyond -- a launch title for the original Playstation that absolutely blew me away. How little we knew, then, the true power of the Playstation... and Final Fantasy VII.

  • After pure amazement (Nintendo NES), childhood glee (Sega Genesis), and glorious adolescence (Playstation) came the system of my teen years, the Playstation 2. Though superior graphically, with an endless array of games and backwards compatibilty with the PS1, the Playstation 2 represents a bittersweet phase in my gaming life -- lots of great games to play, not much time to play them, as school and other real-world concerns eventually took over. Gone were the glory days of endless hours spent in front of the Playstation, replaced with the occasional Friday/Saturday gaming binge and SATs. I've still got this hooked up, with lots of games I bought but never got a chance to play.

  • I believe my first Game Boy Advance was a hand-me-down from my sister, who was ahead of me when it came to handheld gaming. I later used it and Game Boy Advance SP (which I bought myself) to retrogame lots of old Gameboy games, including the main draw: a Phantasy Star compilation. I don't really play them as much anymore, which is a shame. They were my first college-level game systems, too, which was perfect for my hectic lifestyle on the move (the PSP later filled that void as well).
