Sega Genesis Games

A list of games I've either played and loved in the past or would be willing to try if I had the opportunity.

List items

  • Quite possibly the best game ever created (for Sega Genesis, at least), this adventure has you chop down grass to get coins, collect and team up with animals, and use their special powers in strategic ways to defeat the bosses.

  • The Phantasy Star franchise has continued in ways I don't like, but none of that can take away from the pure joy of what's possibly the best RPG ever created: Phantasy Star IV. I also enjoyed Phantasy Star I through III to varying degrees. The multi-generational branching game Phantasy Star III is highly underrated.

  • My favorite game in the franchise is "Shining Force II." Along with Crusader of Centy and Phantasy Star IV, it ranks among the very best of the Sega Genesis games I played back in the day.

  • There are apparently five games across multiple platforms, but I think the best one might be "Ecco: The Tides of Time" a.k.a. Ecco II. It's like the first game, but with more story. Almost nothing can beat playing a dolphin in a video game.

  • Here's the granddaddy of them all: the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. No Sega Genesis list would be complete without it. Sonic 1-Sonic 3, plus Sonic & Knuckles, were the best, but I've played other Sonic games, both in the Genesis era and beyond.

  • Here's one where you play as a pony that you customize yourself! It was fun to play with colors then have that pony run around, I honestly don't remember much about the gameplay, but it was worth a rental for the custom ponies.

  • This character is linked to eight games on GiantBomb, but I only remember the Sega Genesis game. Perhaps the others are re-releases. I played a LOT of platformers back in the day -- they were easy to pick up and put down quickly. Ristar had to be the best, even though I probably put more hours into Bubsy games.

  • There were a few different games, as I recall. There were a lot of different features and power-ups for Bubsy.

  • Unapologetically a '90s mascot, I still had fun playing his games because he was a cheetah. Not sure Cool Spot could compete.

  • Aero the Acro-Bat may very well be my first Sega Genesis game rental from the local library. Had I started with the A's?? In any case, these were fun games, but kind of frustrating, too. Perhaps I was too young to fully appreciate them.

  • When I said there's almost nothing that beats playing a dolphin in a video game, I have to admit, playing a velociraptor may come close! I think the game I remember most is "Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition."

  • Who could forget ToeJam and Earl? This game series was creative in that you played through levels with both characters, switching as necessary based on whose special talent was the most useful at any given time.

  • Mondays, amirite? Garfield had some Sega Genesis games and, being a huge Garfield fan, I wasn't going to miss them.

  • A great cartoon on Nickelodeon. The rest of my list could probably be defined as either X-Men, Disney, or a game licensed for something I love. This one is the latter.

  • Loved the movie, so there's a good chance I played this!

  • There was a Simpsons arcade game that may just have been the best arcade game ever -- I always played as Lisa.

  • Whenever we went to an arcade for a summer or school trip, I always looked for the Darkstalkers machine and played as Felicia.

  • Great arcade games. Always played as Storm.

  • This was a great arcade game, too, wasn't it? I remember only wanting to play as my favorite, Donatello.

  • I'm beginning to think arcade games should have their own list. I always played as Chun-Li and memorably beat this blowhard in my freshman year of college who was convinced a girl couldn't beat him. I may've cheesed with with a ton of quick kicks, but honestly, a win's a win, right?

  • I'm fairly certain I liked Tiny Toon games, particularly if I could play as the female bunny.

  • One of the games I played at my dentist's office waiting for my turn. There were also a fair bit of Disney games there, too, including Lion King and TaleSpin.

  • One of my favorite games to play in the dentist's office.

  • Featuring one of the greatest Disney platformers, while simultaneously featuring one of the most frustrating games in Disney platformers. I liked it better than Aladdin, maybe even better than TaleSpin. I don't remember The Jungle Book or Pinocchio at all.

  • Not sure I ever played this, but I'd be willing to try it.

  • I'm not ashamed to say I enjoyed at least one Power Rangers game. Always played as the Yellow Ranger.

  • There were games for Next Generation and DS9 that I wouldn't mind trying.

  • I don't remember playing it, but SeaQuest was basically Star Trek underwater.

  • I honestly don't remember the Spider-Man Sega Genesis games, but I wouldn't mind trying them.

  • I don't remember playing any Addams Family Sega Genesis games, but I wouldn't mind trying them.

  • Here's a game I'd really like to play, even though it was never released in the U.S.
