Site For Sounds - Red Dead Redemption (Part 1)

Red Dead Redemption is one of those games that definitely pushes the limit with the capabilities with sound. All the little things you can hear in this game is mind boggling. Anyone who’s playing this game or just finished knows this has production value. Red Dead Redemption defines what it’s like to have an excellent headset or a total kick ass surround sound system when you play. But like usual, I can only tell you what it sounds like on my Turtle Beach Headset Ear Force X4 Headset.

With any good western story, you need to have a horses. Rockstar definitely went into detail with horse graphically , but of course I want to talk about the sound. When you’re trotting with your horse hooves you can hear the difference between when you’re on a main path, off road, crossing a wooden bridge. The swamp lands near the Thieves hideout is always a nice touch hearing the steps of the horse make small splashes as move along. My personal favorite sound the horse foot step makes is when you’re trotting in the snow. Just hearing the hooves pressing down and compacting snow underneath it is pure sound heaven.I haven’t had this fun playing a game with a horse since, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Let’s not forget what Rockstar is very good at, the small details. Some people think that skinning the animal get boring due to it’s lengthy animation. This may sound evil, but with surround sound headset, it really rocks.  You hear the knife puncturing through the meat and blood splattering, along with blood spraying on the screen. One top of that you John Marston making some sly remark like, “Lets me take your coat madame.”

I really applaud the sound department team for noticing small things especially when you walk around a town. In town of Chuparosa I walked in between a set hanging pigs and you can hear the rope holding them up build tension. To me that was just pure audio candy. It’s all the small details that count for audio enthusiast to appreciate.

My personal favorite thing to travel off course and huff it on foot. In the middle of the desert, sometimes you can hear wolves in the distance howling. The birds chirping or random gun fire from a distance. It’s fun when cougars and barracudas come out to attack you. They’re so fast and you won’t know they’re attacking you until you hear their growls. It sometime makes me jump.

I could get into the music department, but that’s a whole other blog entry in itself. If you can get your hands on surround sound headset, do yourself a favor and have play one night with with Red Dead Redemption and indulge yourself into audio heaven.

Favorite SFX: Springfield Rifle shots.
