GOTY 2011

I tried to do a top 10 list, but a lot of the games I played this year just aren't from 2011. Costume Quest and LIMBO were superb, and Borderlands was really fun to play split-screen. I have a whole shwack of games that I've bought but haven't yet finished, like Trine 2, Fractals, Deus Ex, Saints Row the Third, and The Old Republic, but I can't very well put games I haven't played that I expect to be good on this list, now can I.

List items

  • A game that finally does shades of grey correctly. It's also drop-dead gorgeous, interesting, and down right fun.

  • As soon as I finished this game, with tears in my eyes, I started up a new game plus so that I could see the last few minutes with the alternate ending.

  • Punch. Punch punch punch cape cape. I'm not very good at this game but I can't stop playing! The combat's just so much fun, and the story isn't bad either.

  • It's a bit sad for me that this game isn't #1, but hey, it was a good year for games. I've still sunk in well over 100 hours, and I'm just crazy for all the open world stuff. It's just that I thought the other games were better this year.

  • Just a fantastic, hilarious game. And as if that weren't enough, the two player mode is so much fun (*waves*)

  • I've never had any desire to play a FPS, excluding the Half-Lifes. This game appealed to me so much that I borrowed a PS3 and rented it, both firsts. I was amazed at the grown-upness of the story.

  • I love playing split-screen games with my husband. This one made us yell at one another a whole bunch ("I said I needed the health! You're at full health!") but the humour and Saturday-morning cartoon extremes were a nice juxtaposition to the seriousness of most games this year (Saints Row the Third is sitting in my pile of shame).

  • I don't care. I know, this was a real let down after Dragon Age:Origins. I know that dwarfs kept dropping from ropes in the sky. And I know that Bioware should have done better. I still liked playing through DA2, felt attached to the characters, and wanted more when it was over. Not every game I played this year can argue that.
