I think it may just depend on who's doing the localisation graphics. A friend of mine does translation graphics for visual novel games and when I asked him about this, stated that he refuses to use them because, "they look like shit"

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@ajamafalous: Ahh, nice. I think Riven definitely holds up better than Myst, but at least from what I remember of it, it's certainly more difficult and in some places more obscure than Obduction - I think they streamlined a lot of their designs for the better in this game, but Riven certainly has it's moments.

@ajamafalous: Haha, i should have also referred to that, and it's something that could have been fixed I think if they didn't let you type the number 3 into the bridges to make them work, thus allowing the code to be guessed without understanding it.

I'm actually referring to The Gauntlet. Although i thought the teleportation to the last section of Hunrath was cool, that puzzle felt the most arbitrary and tedious by far. I honestly feel they should have just placed some settlement there so Maray looked like a place that's lived in, and replaced the puzzle with something simpler that lets you into the caves in Hunrath.

I kinda secretly hope they patch this later down the line to make for a better experience, as I think these two elements are the only major issues with the game.

And yeah, despite those, I think it's still better than both Myst and Riven in making the puzzles make sense and fit well into the world.

@ajamafalous:That's what I thought too.

It is actually used though for some of the super-backers, to unlock very specific easter eggs, but you first have to make the machine fall off the lever, then input this code (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab8GtuPdrUQ), then guess one of around 65, 20-digit codes. If the lights turn green, you've entered a correct code. Return to Farley's house and turn on the projector to see the easter egg. The only code that's been made public is 34729-20764-58390-20234

These easter eggs seem more like a personal note rather than something anyone else could find cool, but theres a great Steam guides page that detailed this (http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=752129037)

@fetterdave: Yeah, I totally get that, it is a shame. I currently run a Hackintosh for better graphics performance and would love to just play all my games on the same operating system I work on, but even with those that are compatible, they take a significant performance hit.

Hopefully Apple will start using decent graphics cards in the future :/

I finished the game a few days ago and loved it - In the end it took me around 13 hours to complete, and that was with some mis-guided assumptions near the end that caused me to solve some puzzles in a very convoluted manner. That one puzzle near the end killed the pacing of the game and would have been far better without it and there were a few smaller issues dotted around, but I think this is their best work yet.

I was impressed the most by the story, which was designed and integrated into the world extremely well. Although i'm a fan of The Talos Principle, i think this game has an edge over it just because the puzzles are really well integrated into the world, and both they and the game environment have a more nuanced role in telling the story, rather than being abstract.

Also...(spoiler)... the whole overlapping world concept was INSANELY COOL 0w0

@fetterdave: Yeah, this sadly seems to be a limitation with Unreal Engine 4 and Apple's graphical framework called Metal, which is only compatible on very recent hardware (2013 onwards, hence the Obduction MacOS hardware requirements). I think they may be able to compile their graphical shaders using OpenGL, but Apple have seriously neglected their support for it which complicates things.

Current Mac hardware still only supports old versions of OpenGL and not very well, plus with some of the more advanced shader and graphical features built into the game, i'm not sure if it's technically feasible for them to build OpenGL-compatible shaders.

Furthermore, with the age of your iMac and the fact that the majority of graphics cards in Mac hardware are pretty underpowered, i'm not sure if it would run on your computer at an acceptable framerate, even with compatible shaders.

It sucks, but there's various technical elements at play here, most of which are outside the developers control :/
