So here's a super small post on what the core Kingdom Hearts games are and the only essential ones to play.

  1. KH1
  2. KH2
  3. KH: Birth by Sleep - The PSP one
  4. KH: Dream Drop Distance - The 3DS one
  5. KH3

That's it. There are plenty of caveats a KH fan wants to add to this list about secret endings and side stories and phone games but if you're just now getting into the series that list is all you need to know.

@eribuster: Hmmm I guess I wasn't thinking in the more general sense of reviving Nintendo's brand overall. Good point.

@vegeta897: I'm not talking about how successful the app itself will be but specifically if it has the potential to have a knock on effect and sell more traditional Mario games which is Nintendo's stated goal for getting into mobile. With Pokemon Go being different from a traditional Pokemon in such a drastic sense it gives more reason for a given mainstream Go user to check out a traditional Pokemon game because it offers something Go doesn't have. The thing that traditional Mario games have over this product, the thing that's supposed to convince people to get Nintendo hardware, is the type of platforming which isn't as drastic enough a difference in the eyes of the mainstream.

There's little reason for a mainstream customer of this app to go engage with the Nintendo ecosystem for a traditional Mario game where as with Pokemon GO there was a plethora of reasons to get a traditional Pokemon game.

I'm glad that this issue is getting a spotlight especially if this will possibly be a mainstay and allow for a more thorough look at possible solutions.

I've always wondered, for instance, if the improvement of art asset generation would be helpful or not. 3D scans to generate assets and textures for realistic art styles would that help reduce workload or would that simply have the effect of jobs being cut instead of crunch time? Like would anything that isn't a fundamental change to how computer engineering for the entertainment sector is treated on a systemic level have any effect?

Phantom Pain is weird for me because for me the guilt isn't in liking Quite or the game but actually believing that the sexualization does serve a greater relevance to her character arc, not talking about the breathing nonsense, and every time I consider trying to tackle explaining that perspective it becomes difficult to come to a point where such a possible write up doesn't just give fuel to MRA-style assholes.

Like I actually think that the crass sexualization is integrated and part of her character arc but that doesn't by definition justify it or protect it from criticism but I have trouble imagining a way to put forward an interpretation of how her character arc works without that interpretation being used as a shield to criticism. Like if one's own interpretation of a work can then be used as tool to further ignorance than doesn't that imply some fault on the side of interpreter? An act of harm?

If the interpretation could cause harm then some form of guilt on my part is justified no matter how much of an attempt at nuance it may seem from my own perspective.

Like the B&B Corp in MGS4 as you noted seems like a further reinforcement of the commentary in MGS3 where the bulk of bosses now no longer have plot or narrative relevance no longer exist as characters with motivation but instead exist as one note characters existing to serve only as a fight with MGS4 pushing it further by having the bosses literally be models and played by models with model posters as hidden collectibles. Before even getting into if all of that is an excuse for exploitation, it probably was, you first have to confront if deeper meanings even matter if the majority wont notice and will be reinforced negatively on stereotypes.

Guh I feel like even this post could be harmful. I hope this isn't seen as passive aggressive antagonism or disingenuous.

@bananasfoster: I too hate those intrusive articles; when they show up on my desktop unannounced, full screen; Austin's voice suddenly blasting through my headphones, screaming at me to read them. Hopefully someone comes up with a plugin to keep them from just randomly clicking themselves when I visit the front page of giant bomb dot com.

Oh man now I want a plugin that actually gives an alert like that when a new editorial shows up, like someone else said they get buried too easily, I'm sure there's some clip of Austin yelling on the Beastcast that someone can use.

I'm not sure I will ever understand Patrick's dislike of MGS2.
