@animasta: When Greene had a shocking start for England in 2010 a lot of people responded to this kind of statement by saying that removing the keeper after one poor performance is likely to make the morale of the team take a massive nosedive, so I'd be surprised if they did, but who knows? It was a really poor performance on his part. He just fell apart by the end. Maybe Van Persie concussed him.

Pretty exciting way for the world cup to continue though! I've always liked the way the netherlands play football, and tonight was a pretty good example, in the second half they were just so energetic, it was nice to see!

@otakugamer: There's a difference between getting fired up about "a game" having a white guy protagonist and "almost every game" having a white guy protagonist.

Yeah sure. No difference whatsoever. Why does AC Unity get scrutinized then and every other game that was displayed on that video? For shame? The games are being judged purely because of the fact that they have a white guy protagonist. Sounds like no difference to me.

In the case of Unity, I believe the controversy stemmed from the fact that the pre-emptive incredibly lame and demonstrably false excuse from Ubi was that having a female protagonist option would "double their work", as if the only thing they changed from AC IV was dick swinging physics or something. There are very few games that even come close to having the same amount of man-hours put into their development as the AC series (I finished IV over Christmas, but I'm pretty sure the credits would still be rolling if I hadn't turned my 360 off), and I'm no programmer, but slightly adjusting character models and animations doesn't seem like the most challenging task in the world.

Look, just imagine, for a second, that the big bad Social Justice Warriors win and almost every game has a black woman as the lead character for no real reason. How would you feel? You'd be pretty pissed, and want to change it, right? Can you not understand that right now that is exactly what the situation is, only in reverse?

People don't hate or want to get rid of white male protagonists. They just don't think that white men are so interesting that they should be the focus of pretty much every major release, is all.

For my part, I thought their second excuse was the worse one, that the story is about the main character, and that in co-op everyone is playing that main character and so putting in a woman wouldn't fit with the vision. That's just seems like a terrible portent for the co-op elements of the game anyway. If you don't have the vision to work your gameplay into your narrative, maybe one of them needs to change.

I'm also kind of thinking that the least interesting stories in previous AC games have been those of the protagonists, Connor being the one possible exception for me (although so many people found the character himself dull that maybe it doesn't matter! Even the "best" of them, Ezio, is more a success because the character is affable. I don't think anyone was raving about the paper-thin revenge motivations that set him up to be an assassin. The stories of the protagonists have only ever been a thin pretense for inserting them into a historical narrative.

I find it difficult to hear the name Neymar without wondering why they've got an architect on the squad.

If we're going to break this down all serious like: I thought the photoshops were hilarious in themselves, but found the words a little tough to swallow. Reminded me of that buzzfeed style of basically talking about everything like a 15-year-old valley girl. It's a style that really irritates me because it always strikes me as an attempt to say "I am totally earnest about how much I love these things," in a register that is so artificial and over the top that it belies an Irony that went out of fashion years ago. I think this is what people used to call the new sincerity, but personally I prefer straight, even if the register is used in irony!

Honestly though, I feel like the most negative reactions are taking themselves too seriously!

Why was that Croatia goal disallowed? I didn't hear the reasoning.

ITV commentators are saying its probably for a foul on the keeper when the croatian player jumped into him.

Adrian Chiles seems genuinely worried that the protestors are going to hang him from a lamp post.

I take it back, this is more than playing for fouls.

Can't help but feel that Brazil are playing for fouls at the moment. Not diving, but really making the most of any small opportunity to get one. Always a bit disappointing to see that
