I am getting a dog

So I have decided that I am going to get a dog. A dog that had been with me since I was just a little kid passed away a few months ago , He was a black Labrador. I have been thinking a lot about what kind of dog I should get and I am leaning towards a Labrador or a Icelandic sheepdog but if any user want to recommend me another type which they have had a good experience with I am open to successions. I love dogs, been around them all my life and it extremely hard to see them go away but I enjoy the time I had with them and I think I can never truly be happy unless I have a dog around me.

And a Rottweiler is Always a good choice

I love dogs. Take good care of him!!

Good luck with that. Dogs are awesome. I wish you the best.

Unless you are one of these assholes who ties their dog up to a pole while you go shopping/drinking. In that case you can burn in hell.

Beagle. They are the absolute best companion dog for a man.

@Atramentous: hey thanks, I will look into that. I even think there is a someone selling Beagles in my town.

I had a collie as a kid and he was the funnest little guy to have around the house. I was very young and even still I have fond memories of him.

You should go to a local rescue to get a dog, they will probably have super young dogs, and old dogs who will spend their whole lives living in shelters. Good luck on finding a new buddy!!! :D

Whatever dog you get, name him duder... or Luchadog.. then your life's objectives are complete

This.

I agree on collies if you don't go to the local rescue.  My friend has 2, they're very smart and amusing/awesome to be around.

I had a boston terrier that passed last year.  That was the smartest and best damn dog I've ever had and when I get another dog I'd like to have another one.

I'm trying to get rid of mine.  Die already goddammit!!!

I would do that but we don't have that kind of shelter here we have found no use for it.

Labs aren't very good dogs... get a border collie, they're good dogs!

edit: get a mix actually they are the healthiest and usually free or very cheap

@Toxic: If it's going to be an inside dog, get one that doesn't shed. You'll thank me later.

Dogs are pretty cool alright. I have cats myself. Not really much of a dog person, but good luck with it and take care of it duder!

Whatever kind you get, don't BUY a dog, rescue one. Don't do anything to keep those puppy mills in business.

This. Rescue dogs have bags more character.
Incidentally, this is my dog. I miss him (he's alive, just other end of the country). He has Labrador, Bloodhound, a few other hound types, and some very, very distant Shepherd in him.
EDIT: That is a large sofa, and he's just recently turned 2.

Yes, besides if you go mutt, they're much healthier over all.

Newfoundland dog.

@Mrnitropb:  That's not her dog, she's lifting her skirt and showing you her beaver.

Sorry.

Not really looking for an inside dog, I enjoy taking them out for walks an such and I am not going to keep him in a doghouse outside. I think that is just cruel.

I had a pair of Jack russels until one recently passed away, the other is quite old now, but still really active and lively. Definitely recommend one of them, lot's of personality and active, and small enough to not be a real hassel, and loyal as hell. Only downside (if you could call it that) is they're hunting dogs, ours would hunt down rabbits in their younger days and even fish. Cleaned out the local telecom of rats too. I reckon they'd be perfect for you, an active dog but really made for inside.

Nothing beats a labrador IMO.

exact same thing happened to my dog a few years ago.

I have a  lab mix and he's a very nice, calm dog. He's 13 years old and is still very healthy, although he's become really lazy >.>
Another dog I have is a crazy mutt. Some ridgeback, some pitbull, and a bunch of others. She's the sweetest dog around people, but is extremely territorial and aggressive towards other dogs.
My friend has a German Shepherd mix who's the coolest dog I've ever seen. He's loyal, calm, and has a good presence around other dogs.

I have no experience with purebreds and whatnot, and I hate small dogs. So I'm biased towards big ones like shepherds and retrievers.

@Toxic: I prefer bichon frise. We had a family dog that we put to sleep several years ago due to old age. My new dog, which we got for free 4-5 years ago, is also a bichon frise. He's very quiet and only barks when someone comes home, he doesn't shed, he looks adorable, and his tail is unmatched.

Link. Bichon frise. 5 years old.

 always a good choice

I would go with the Labrador.
Also make sure you don't have sex with it.

That's not the Rotti's fault though,
That's just because assholes tend to like the breed.
They are really very, Loyal easy going dogs.

get a golden retriever. they are the best kind of dog.

Posted by superpope

Get a purebreed, a mix or a mutt, but please rescue it. Get it from a rescue organization or your local shelter. Shop around and you can find the right dog for you. Most shelters are full of great dogs that families couldn't afford (or didn't deserve.)
Plus its almost always cheaper than buying from someone who breeds the poor things for money.

For purebred dogs, rescue organizations are great ways to get the perfect dog... they try to match dogs with people so that they dont get them back again. For mutts and mixes just go to the shelter.

I had a poodle growing up, about 20LB, I can tell that's probably not the type of dog you are looking for but he was a wonderful companion. He lived 17 years, it was a wonderful experience. I will definitely be getting a dog once I am settled down at one point again.

Get a wolf. You know you want a wolf. You should go out and capture a wolf. RIGHT NOW!

Yeah I like beagles a lot as well. That would make for a good choice. I have a Lhaso Apso cross Bison and she is awesome, great choice if you have a limited amount a space for a dog and you can't have a bigger breed.

Icelandic Sheepdogs are pretty awesome.

German shepherd FTW
I myself have a Greyhound, not the best type of dog if you're gonna keep it in yer house though.
Also i hate how people stereotype Rottweilers and German Shepherds as "bad dogs"... bad dogs are raised that way.. not born

Nothing better than a cat. You don't have to clean up his poop
