The Zelda video is full of inconsistencies. First he says, a certain type of enemy or trap doesn't work that well in 3D, then he suggests exactly the same trap to be used in a 3D Zelda game. A lot of his criticisms directed at OoT could also be directed at ALttP. And ironically he constantly bashes SS, even though it changed the combat exactly the way he wanted. If you are skilled enough, you can end most battles quickly.

I get the feeling, this guy has no idea what he is talking about.

@pyrodactyl: The point is, on a PC you can chose between high graphical fidelity at the cost of some frames per second and higher framerate at the cost of graphical fidelity. Console games don't offer that choice, but there is no good reason why they shouldn't. He may sound like an arrogant PC master race smug, but his points are valid.

Also some console gamers might not even realize the difference. I've played a lot of TF2 and my framerate is usually above 60 fps. But on a few occasions on larger maps with many player models on the screen my framerate can drop down to something between 25 and 35 fps, and it feels like shit when it happens. If you play a game at 30 fps locked, it isn't that bad and you get used to it. But dropping down from 60 to 30 will give you eye cancer, and you will be less accurate.

Anybody familiar with CotGW? They've had a good discussion about the Nintendo issue and feminism in video games in their latest podcast.

http://www.twitch.tv/cotgw/b/526809825

A good point they made was, that it's also about intent. Most developers just want to make a game without any social commentary or malicious intent. Nintendo has always been very careful not to offend anybody.

I think there is some miscommunication.

It's like when you leave 100.000$ in your car for everybody to see, and the next day you wonder why your car disappeared. People would say: "Well, why did you leave 100.000$ in your car? Were you asking for it to be stolen?" This is treating the criminal like a force of nature. No matter how much we speak out against thieves, there will always be thieves (maybe until we reach the Star Trek age). It's neither tolerating theft nor is it blaming the victim. It's a method to prevent bad things from happening in the future. Don't leave that much money in your car.

But the comparison doesn't hold in this case. If you want to get your video game on Steam, what other choices do you have? The only thing you can do, is to expect and prepare for some trolling and outrage from teenage boys. Getting her phone number is in another league though, I have to say. That's some creepy shit.

How do you stop them? Do something? Something what? Speak out against them? I think everybody who visits this website would find such behaviour disgusting. We all think, that it's wrong. But it's always implied that we are somehow responsible. Because it is always gamers, as a whole, who are harassing women. Not some insecure teenagers from 4chan. The videogame community.

I'm not part of that community. It doesn't even exist. Leave me out of it!

We get it Patrick, you're real modern, I love that you're allowed to continue to use Giantbomb as your outlet for pushing your over the top agendas out into the world.

Over the top agendas as in talking about video games and the video game industry?

lol ur attitude, and those like it, really suck

The Mattie Brice article isn't about video games at all.

Once again a major hype-title, GTA V, has been released, every gaming site is talking about it non-stop, and I don't care one bit. I feel left out. :(

See you in a month.

The problem I have with this whole thing is that I don't understand what the hell kind of "change" that "conversation" is supposed to have. All I saw is a developer cautiously trying to calm any fires before they could start because Anita Sarkeesian made an absurd statement about how Spelunky apparently considers women as equals to dogs, or something. That doesn't solve anything.

When I think of "discourse" I don't think of "two people smiling and then ultimately accomplishing nothing." I think of, you know, something actually coming out of it. I don't really know why we should fall head over heels for civility for civility's sake. That "conversation" accomplished nothing. Derek Yu's response is the worst possible outcome of this Tropes vs. Women in Gaming junk, because it's now making developers afraid of their own mechanics and acting like they have to apologize or worry they're offending someone for doing nothing offensive at all, all because of some person on YouTube putting words in their mouths.

How is this helpful or constructive in any way? But hurray! Civility! Everyone held hands!

What I find most baffling is that we're talking about Spelunky here... It uses a lot of old Indiana Jones clichès and is clearly not meant to be taken seriously. It's a joke. A parody. You're supposed to laugh.

But the "paragon" of feminism tweeted about it, so we better back down in shame.
