training to be an MMA fighter #1 (after my last blog series)

So go ahead and read my other blogs if you need but basically i did my first cage fight. I lost to a much stronger guy. I was way more technical but he was 20 pounds heavier and just strong as hell.

Ive decided to fight again. I really love doing it. But i must get stronger. I need mroe conditioning and body hardening.

New training schedule will be basically. Run 4 miles or so, do jiu jitsu, lift weights, then mma training. 5-6 days a week.

Ill post blogs randomly updating my progress.

I decided once i hit my goal weight of gaining 10 solid pounds of pure muscle while doing this cardio and mma training, i will do another fight.

Its going to be a long tough road. But i want to be really good at this. Not just mediocre.

Damn dude, sorry to hear about the loss. I know how much of an advantage size/muscle can be in a fight. Good for you for continuing on with it, good luck with building up and giving it another go.

How was he 20 pounds heavier? Did you not use weight classes in your fight?

Unless you're an expert at Jiu Jitsu and one of the other martial arts you'll always be beaten if you're fighting across weight classes.

@tunaburn: That's awesome man, really glad to hear that you're gonna stick with it. Be an inspiration for the rest of us. And hey, if you could throw some workout tips/routines down here for the rest of us (i.e. me), that'd be lovely as well.

All lost there first fights, so wouldn't be arsed lad even if you lose if you like doing it, do it, if you can't hack the getting beat part and worry to death throw ya hand in now.

Just my two cents.

Good stuff sir. Even if you were to decide not to fight again I think this is the right choice to make.

Gaining lean muscle mass is never a bad thing, fight or no fight.

if youre talking about steroids then no, but i will be doing protein twice a day.

because i weighed in at 130 and so did he. but i walk at 130. he cut from 150 for it. i am decent at jiu jitsu. its my main training.

its supposed to be posted today.

@ItBeStefYo said:

really? its the most used martial art in mma.

@VinceNotVance: well, heres what we did for a 30 minute blast last night. each activity was 1 minute. no breaks.

YOUTUBE ANY OF THESE IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE

jog

windsprint

jog

high knees

jog

forward jumping jacks

double leg hops

jumpsquats

forward gallops

backward gallops

forward lunges

backward lunges

forward bearcrawls

backward bearcrawls

sideways bearcrawls

other side sideways bearcrawls

normal pushups

wide grip pushups

diamond pushups (close grip)

alternating falling pushups. (on your knees straight up. fall to left. push up all the way to your knees straight up. fall to right. repeat)

spiderman pushups

crunches

bicycle crunches

leg lifts

flutter kicks

horizontal flutter kicks

windshield wipers

pelvic lifts

sprawls (by far the worst part)

and last thing is hold a handstand against a wall. not a HEADstand. a HANDstand.

hope that helps a little. thats not the same workout we do every day obviously. but we do that usually once or twice a week. if you just want to get in shape that will most definitely be good for 3 days a week. with jogging 3 more at least 2 miles jogging. but you want to be doing like 3-4 after a while. and taking a day off. you will be cut my friend. toned in other words.

im no doctor or professional trainer. thats just what the guys i train with that arent actualy fighting, but like to train do.

then if you want to bulk up. you need weights.

Jui-Jitsu is probably the best martial art to learn as a smaller fighter when fighting against bigger opponents, just look at Royce Gracie in the early days of the UFC, he completely dominated everyone.

You probably answered this earlier in the series, but how old are you? You've been training for a relatively small amount of time, but if you're young and keep at it, you will soon be more well trained than most of your competitors. And yea, i'd think if you got up some muscle and then cut it'd help a ton. i know the jiu jitsu thing is that bigger guys don't have a huge advantage over smaller guys, but that kinda goes out the window in MMA. anyway, much respect. very few people have the guts or dedication to try what you're doing, but almost all of us day dream about it. good luck and keep us updated!

Remember this. When your 45, hurt everyday, and have nothing but some skewed sense of pride to show for these fights, you'll regret destroying your body.

On another note. I hope you don't hurt yourself. (knock out teeth, screw your ears up, screw your brain up, screw your joints up, or break anymore bones)

Good luck.

I'm glad to hear your going to continue! Even though you did lose, I was wondering if you could PM me, or post the video of the fight, I would like to see it.

It is quite terrible that his size advantage was that big, thats the problem with fighting at your natural weight, that wrestling mentality of cutting weight puts you up against a much larger man when you get into the cage. Just try gaining some more muscle, or consider fighting at flyweight, I wish you good luck!

@Sumbog: yea he was supposed to of posted the video today but he didnt. im guessing tomorrow then. ill be posting it. in its embarrassing glory. yea it took this beating for me to fully realize the size advantage even in your own weight class. i need to gain some muscle weight and cut down a weight class like everyone else.

@BigChickenDinner: my trainer is 39 and doesnt hurt everyday. hes done dozens of mma fights. i train with a guy who is 43. he is still doing great. youre takling about something you have no idea about. im going to be able to look back at my life when im 45 and say i did what i set out to do. i did something most people cant/wont do.

what are you going to be able to look back and say about your life?

That I joined the Marine Corps Infantry and was the best damn fucking shot with a M249SAW a Gunner of Marines has seen in the past 15 years. Not to mention a better machine gunner than those Marines who were machine gunners. An Expert on the rifle range twice. But really it accounts for jack shit. Just like beating up on people in a ring.

I really find it hard to believe those guys aren't hurting everyday. My left elbow is hurting right now and I only Hyper Extended it during grappling. My knees are stiff from skateboarding and highschool football. I guess its possible, But I really find it hard to believe

I'm no physician, but I actually don't think MMA is one of the worse sports for your body. I think soccer or football are worse, since you're moving at higher speeds and being tacled at higher speeds too, easier straining things.

Keep working hard. Gaining that extra muscle will do you good. It's better to lose weight for a fight than to gain it. Even if the other guy is dehydrated at the weigh-ins, get some water in him and he's in a different weight class. That's how Benson Henderson beat Frankie Edgar by slowly losing weight and building his size back up on fight day instead of what Frankie does by always staying around 155lbs. When you find a good routine the results of your fights will turn out better. Good luck.

@Pacmanlh: benson trains 30 minutes from me. we compete in the same jiu jitsu tournaments 4 times year. hes a nice guy. he competes at 171 in jiu jitsu but fights mma at 155. big difference.

its pretty damn rough. getting punched, kicked, kneed, elbowed, choked, joints broken, but long term it actually isnt as bad as football or boxing. only the short term injuries.

@BigChickenDinner: so basically what youre saying is no matter what you do in the long run it doesnt mean anything. you joined the marines. im competing in mma. when were 45 will we both be happy with our decisions? noone will know until then. dont bash on me now man. lets discuss this in 20 years.

@tunaburn: Raising a Child means something. Causing harm for entertainment means nothing. Killing people for a paycheck means nothing other than your a terrible sick human being with no compassion. So basically what I'm saying is HURTING people for fun or personal gain or for some fucking ego boost means jack shit. Your 26 right? act like it and don't put fucking words in my mouth. I'll be 21 in a few months, how can I understand this and you cant? I'm not bashing on you, I'm trying to let you know, permanent injury is a very real threat.

But like I said, I really doubt people can get the shit beat out of them multiple times and have no sore joints or long term damage, if you can explain to me how 2 years later my hyper extend elbow is fucking sore, yet these dudes have no issues at their age? Ever hear of Cauliflower ear?

And if you think cauliflower ear is a serious issue then you have no idea what you are talking about.

*sigh* The whole, "there's no point in this, your just hurting your self for no long term reason other than pride" seems like a good message to try and give someone. But what ever, let people do what they wish blindly.

It just angers me to see society put activities like this on a pedestal, for no reason that their own personal pleasure. He seems militantly opposed to the idea that permanent injury is possible, I'd like to try and let him know, it can happen. Cauliflower ear may not be serious but it looks nasty and is permanent. He also likes to try and passively aggressively be a dick. So I'm gonna be of a bit dick back, just the way I am.

@BigChickenDinner: youre still crying over your elbow 2 years later? maybe youre just a pussy. ive had ribs broken. my shoulder dislocated and had my elbow hyperextended at least 5 times now. i feel good.

by the way im not hurting people for fun because i love hurting people. its part of the sport. same with boxing, football, hockey, soccer, rugby, wrestling, and a ton of other sports. we both signed up for it because we love doing it. i wouldnt try to talk you out of your hobbies would i? blow all the guys you want. i wont try and talk shit about it.

also i have a daughter. a beautiful 6 year old daughter. she gets straight A's and is working her way up in tae-kwon-do. i guess ill look back at that when im an old man like you said?

of fucking course injury can happen. its a risk reward system. its fun as hell to get in there and train and just do it. some people dont mind a few injuries here and there. also cauliflower ear can be drained. its not permanent really. you should do research first. more people die every year from shark attacks than have died int he history of MMA fighting.

god i wish i could block people..... i wont be replying to you anymore.

Cauliflower ear (complication of hematoma auris, perichondrial hematoma, or traumatic auricular hematoma) is a condition that occurs when the external portion of the ear suffers a blow, blood clot or other collection of fluid under the perichondrium. This separates the cartilage from the overlying perichondrium that supplies its nutrients, causing it to die and resulting in the formation of fibrous tissue in the overlying skin. As a result, the outer ear becomes permanently swollen and deformed, resembling a cauliflower.

Because an acute hematoma can lead to cauliflower ear, prompt evacuation of the blood is needed to prevent permanent deformity. The outer ear is prone to infections, so antibiotics are usually prescribed. Pressure is applied by bandaging, helping the skin and the cartilage to reconnect. Without medical intervention the ear can suffer serious damage. Disruption of the ear canal and ear drum is possible. The outer ear may wrinkle, and can become slightly pale due to reduced blood flow; hence the common term "cauliflower ear".

Researched.

Also Randy Couture's ears look the way they do because he thinks it looks cool.

Good for you for deciding to continue. I can respect that kind of perseverance and dedication.
