Only album I've listened to that was released this year is Black Clouds and Silver Linings [Dream Theater] and it was all right, their newer stuff hasn't really impressed me that much.

Circus Maximus is due a new album this year, so my eyes are definitely on them. That could be my album of the year if it's anywhere as good as The First Chapter.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Megadeth is also working on a new album that might be released this year, so I'll be watching them too.

I'm surprised no one's said my favorite album yet. Anyway, this is my top 5 list so far.

1. John Frusciante - The Empyrean
2. Mos Def - The Ecstatic
3. Mastodon - Crack the Skye
4. dalek - Gutter Tactics
?. The Lonely Island - Incredibad

I honestly don't know where to put Incredibad. I've actually listened to it more than anything else and wayyy too much fun with it.

I hate modern music. There is nothing on MTV or the radio that is recent that I like.

@Serker: you know i've actually heard good things about this posthumous J Dilla release, but i stayed away since most posthumous releases aren't all that, but i guess i'll give it a try

for me it totally ruined it. it was so damn awful, i was seriously wondering what they were thinking. to cover a hardcore classic that way, i mean if i was a member of black flag i would be pretty ashamed.

I'd say for this year the best thing that has come out is St. Vincent's new album. Heck, I think it's the only good thing.

I was deeply disappointed with Yeah Yeah Yeah's new album. I really like the first two, but this one was just uninspired.

There hasn't been a lot of good Metal albums this year (that I can think of) but one that comes to mind is Waking Into Nightmares by Warbringer.

Oh, Hordes of Chaos by Kreator is really good too. Very intense.

Best records haven't come out yet. New Moneen, Brand New, Look Mexico, and hopefully a self released new Alkaline Trio record all coming in second half of 2009.

@Blaine:

I love Animal Collective! I just don't understand why Merriweather has stirred everyone up so much. Last year's Strawberry Jam album was just as good. Peacebone, Fireworks, Chores, and Derek, were all amazing tracks, but hardly anybody gave it a listen.

Plus, I saw them live a couple of weeks ago and Fireworks was by far the best song in the whole set.

J Dilla's first posthumous album was pretty awesome too. DOOM and Blu have good passes over his beats, and just thinking about how big his unreleased catalogue is makes me so happy, even though he's gone, and his mother is having a hard time handling his estate.

Jay Stay Paid: Highest rated album on Metacritic right now

DOOMs album was sub-par compared to his previous stuff, but a new Madvillainy's on the way and Absolutely was the best track on Born Like This so I can't complain.
Mars Volta also released half a good album ( First 4 songs are the shit, not so much the other 5)

I'd like to throw in the other Animal Collective single.... besides this and "My Girls", I think all Animal Collective is is noise... but they can make some amazing songs if they go a little bit less experimental

Check out Black Math Horseman's Wyllt if you haven't already.

I'd say Late of the Pier's album, Fantasy Black Channel, but that came out in 2008. There really hasn't been anything to come out that really has interested me. The collaboration by N.A.S.A. was really sub par at best. At this point, I am waiting on Deftones' Eros and Massive Attack's "LP5". I was originally waiting for Charles Hamilton's first album, but the guy is a complete douche bag.

I think if NAS went back to his roots and released an album by the end of the year it would be a hit.

@r3b3lr0b0t: I love that grizzly bear song! Such a good band! So I'd put that song and the album Veckatimest in my favourites.

For me the best album is by far Merriweather Post Pavillion by Animal Collective with tMy Girls being the best song/single. Other albums I've enjoyed are Manners by Passion Pit; These Four Walls by We Were Promised Jetpacks; Wall of Arms by The Maccabees (Love You Better is an immense song!).

Can't think of anything else at the moment!

It takes me an excruciating amount of time to get to new albums, and I'm sure had I heard it more than once it would be right up there, because they're a great band.

Same applies to new releases by The Mars Volta, mewithoutYou and dredg.

@jakob187: I don't know which album of Mastodon's I'd say is my favorite.  I'm new to them though, got Crack the Skye and liked it so much I bought Blood Mountain and Leviathan shortly after.

Figure I'll throw in my most recent purchase.  The Devil Wears Prada - With Roots Above and Branches Below and Dance Gavin Dance - Happiness  Neither is amazing or anything but I'm enjoying both of them.

Oh, I'm also mad into Röyksopp, and I'm loving that they're releasing two albums this year. Junior hasn't grabbed me as instantly as The Understanding did, but the tune Vision One is still one of my favourite songs of the year.

@HandsomeDead: Bonkers is a solid tune, and a great way to back up Dance Wiv Me. I second that nomination, fer sure.

For my part, this is the third time I've professed my love of Karnivool's new single on these boards, but I'm donning my purple pimp hat again...

Personally, I don't care about paying full price for an album, as it's all just votes for the record company to see so they'll say "alright, we'll keep these guys around and let them make some more albums".  I'm well aware that the band actually only gets about 3 cents for every album sold, but it still doesn't make me care about price.  If I like it, then I'll buy it.

lol  I keep forgetting that Crack The Skye came out this year.  It's a good album, don't get me wrong...but I don't really think it's a good representation of the Mastodon I know and love.  Blood Mountain was vastly superior to Crack The Skye.

Another album I've been diggin' on lately is Parkway Drive's Horizons, although the album has apparently been out for about two years.  Fucking brutal as Hell.

The last album I'll throw out there is Scar Symmetry's Holographic Universe.  Damn fine Gothenburg album.  Too bad the lead singer left the band, as that guy has a killer set of pipes on him:
