"So bad it's good" and how Deadly Premonition is being sold short

So everyone is throwing their two cents into the ring on Deadly Premonition and I figure it's my turn. Like many I've been religiously keeping up with both Endurance Runs, which takes a bit of time I might add, as well as recently purchasing the game for myself. This is a good time to note that I haven't even reached the hospital in my own playthrough, so you'll see no spoilers here beyond what either Run has already seen. I'm just sharing my experience with this title and addressing those that maybe aren't satisfied with the ironic praise from trolls like Jim Sterling.

 Hmm, Game Party indeed!
 Hmm, Game Party indeed!
This blog also won't spend much time talking about how awesome Deadly Premonition is for its entirely too loud, entirely inappropriate soundtrack or how the awful controls make you want to throw the controller. Critics won't be appeased by the humor in vending machines that only sell saltine crackers (at least they look like saltines) for $35, more than the actual game costs in real life. These points have been thoroughly made in other blogs. Deadly Premonition instead deserves praise on the same level of  The Beatles: Rock Band as a truly heartfelt dedication, in this case to storytelling and entertainment during the 80's and 90's.

I ask this to anyone who believes the value of Deadly Premonition begins and ends with the "so bad it's good" mentality. Have you ever seen such overwhelmingly positive reaction to shovelware on the Wii? In all likelihood, no, you haven't. Game Party (and nearly all its ilk) despite selling over three million copies and receiving two sequels is a terrible video game made only to fool children, mothers, and otherwise ignorant customers en route to dollar signs. My point is that Game Party should be a perfect candidate for the same "so bad it's good" logic, yet this clearly isn't so. Something else, in my opinion the very attitude of the developers, separates the two.

Hopefully this isn't coming across as an angry rant criticizing anyone who thought, for instance, the frame rate during the chase sequence was the funniest thing they'd seen all day. The game is funny, and whether it's accidental or intentional shouldn't be the major concern. What I'm saying here is that the lasting appeal is a different animal entirely. "So weird it's good" seems more appropriate, although as someone who never got into Katamari Damacy I don't think this phrase tells the whole story either. I was thinking of ending this by asking everyone to buy the game but at the risk of sounding like a commercial, just open your minds a bit instead. Explaining the genuine appeal of Deadly Premonition isn't easy, but it does indeed exist.

Nice to see that so many people are actually enjoying it. The game does have a unique charm, and stands apart from other good games because of that.
Yay for Deadly Premonition!!!

I still think I would literally commit suicide if I had to play it for more than an hour. The GB crew make the game bearable becuase they're so funny but I think, to legitimately enjoy this game you would have to be pretty messed up.

It stands apart from other good games by not being good.  If it was an open world adventure game without combat it would be better.  So when half your gameplay is so bad that it detracts from everything else its not good.  Yes Deadly Premonition reaches to be unique, it has a soul to it Dante's Inferno for example lacks.  But just because it was crafted with love doesn't make it a good game.

Well that is exactly how it stands APART from other good games. You know, by being good at something different than other good games. Just my opinion though.

I don't give even half a fuck what all the snobs out there say. I enjoyed the game and feel no need to qualify that with anything. Let the haters go worship at the altar of boring, tired, so-called Triple-A shit like Final Fantasy XIII. I'll be twice as entertained with Deadly Premonition for a third of the price.

let me guess you've never played a game that was not a "triple A title" or a game that got lower than a 9 out 10?

I've played bad games before, but this game is something else entirely. Part of it is that I don't like horror games at all (whether or not you might consider it "scary"), but some is the story parts of the game. The voice acting is beyond horrible and the conversations go about as slow as humanly possible while getting nowhere. Half of the dialogue is mindless crap that doesn't advance the scene in any way, like when York is eating with the hotel owner at the big table.

There is no such as thing as "so bad it's good". Shit is shit. I'm not saying this about Deadly Premonition because I haven't played it, but I have absolutely no interest in the game and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like it if I played it, and I hate the way people are overhyping it and being overly defensive of it. The sooner we can all acknowledge that this is a terrible but somewhat charming and unique game, the better.

This is a good point. It's weird how we will accept a game with good gameplay and an awful story as a respectably decent game, but a game with bad gameplay and a good story gets shit on to no end.

I TRY TO GET OUT OF THE DEADLY PREMONITION DEFENSE FORCE, BUT YOU KEEP ROPING ME BACK IN!!!

It's not a terrible game, though.  Most of the mechanics end up being resoundingly mediocre at best, but there's nothing outright terrible about them that I've seen, nothing that has made me just not want to play the game anymore or made me felt like I'm suffering through some grave injustice to get to the parts I want to see.  Again, if you want to argue that you don't want to play through mediocrity to find the good parts (of which there are many), I can totally see where you're coming from.  But there's a huge difference between mediocre and terrible.

lol I don't have to sit here and explain how bad this game is when 99% of the internet already has. Go play it if you want and I'll go play my "9 out 10 triple A titles". Games that deserve it get those scores for a reason.

@tdk08: I don't think anyone here is trying to compare it to the big-name AAA games. If you do that, of course you won't like it.

From the ERs I'd have to say that some of the voice acting (York and Emily in particular) is really solid. Sometimes understated in a way you don't hear in games much. And some (some) of the plot presentation is quite effective.

Some of the bad stuff seems bad on purpose and some of it just seems straight up bad.  But there's some good stuff in there too.

I'd totally be playing this right now if I had a 360.

Also: I don't think the weird prices are necessarily on purpose. Probably just bad localization.

@Turtlemayor333: Did you actually read Jim Sterling's review of Deadly Premonition up on Destructoid? He doesn't just enjoy the game ironically, but is genuinely appreciative of it's unique charm.
That 10/10 wasn't an ironic joke. He genuinely believes the game deserves it. I'm inclined to agree. It's like nothing else out there and I'm enthralled by it. Wish it was out here in the UK.
