MLAA obsession + inFamous + personal stuff update

MLAA, the game changer?

So recently I've been watching a lot of the Killzone 3 gameplay videos and I was wondering how can Guerrilla be making such a huge step in graphical quality taking into account Killzone 2 was already crazy. The thing is that they are now using MLAA in their in-house engine instead of Nvidia Quincunx (QAA), the effect is said to be similar to MSAA 16x in some cases and MSAA 4x in the worst with very little artifacting here and there, for example in fences. This is a huge quality increase from QAA which has the effect of MSAA 4x at the performance cost of 2x with some texture blurring. The MLAA magic is that it can be fully offload to the Cell's SPUs because it works with the screen image like a post processing effect instead of being part of the rendering pipeline, freeing a lot of work of the RSX and making almost all jaggies disappear, without the Quincunx blurring(watch some GoW III retail version or KZ 3 videos).

What I've been thinking is that there is a SPU that is only used to run the XMB and the system OS, couldn't just Sony now that the ps3 has been hacked and that pirates have some version of the jailbreak device running roms let developers use this SPU to improve the quality of games?, like warning the user that the XMB will be disable while they play that kind of game and free some time to offload part of the MLAA duties to it, it could also work with every game of the ps3 library because you are using a SPU that was previously only assigned to the XMB and now it is running some form of MLAA.

The firmware update only needs to check if that old game is using MSAA, if the game has no anti-aliasing at all, you just would have to use the XMB in game and activate the use of MLAA with the warning that after doing it the XMB will not work till you turn off your ps3. With new games the use of this SPU could be added in the normal job scheduling of the game, freeing even more work of the RSX  and other SPUs.  It's a pity that the eighth SPU is completely locked and/or faulty in the ps3 Cell, MLAA it is believed that only uses 1/1.2 SPU raw power to work and the benefits of that resource could extend the ps3 life a lot.

We will have to wait for the release of KZ3 and Infamous 2 which are said to be using the Santa Monica implementation of this technique and see the improvement, both games are already looking way better than their last iteration in the graphics department

inFamous

I finished inFamous with good karma last sunday, the ending was amazing and left the door opened for more than one sequel, the plot which seemed crazy and had a lot of holes, was wrapped up very well leaving you a lot of questions but also making sense with the event of the first game, it's a shame that this new franchise didn't sell a lot because it is clear that at least a trilogy was planned from the beginning and SuckerPunch kinda created it's own open world sub genre. If you can buy it and play it before inFamous 2 comes out it would be a fair prize for a developer that took the risk and created a new IP and delivered a very polished game.
What really bothers me is that Prototype is a piece of shit and some people picked that up instead of inFamous, it was so bad that I started playing it when it was released and it's one of the few games that went to backlog since february. If you enjoyed Prototype then inFamous is a AAA to you, Prototype was subpar.

Personal stuff

Dad's health update: He will be entering surgery on Wednesday at 12:00 am Georgetown Time, it will last between 7 and 8 hours, the duodenum and the head of the pancreas will be removed, then with some of that material they will do a biopsy to confirm it's cancer, according to the doctors he will have a "normal" life with a normal diet and has chances to live well for some years, we have to see if that statement changes after the biopsy results are done

Thanks to all of those that wished me luck

The darkest hour

So, my dad has almost been fully diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, I discovered his skin was a bit yellow last Monday night so he went to the hospital,  there is still a tiny hope it's not cancer because a biopsy has not been done yet, he will be entering surgery soon to check if there is a hidden calculation blocking something (no calculation was discovered with the images tests so far).
If he has head pancreatic cancer then his life expectancy is very short, I have no brothers and I'm a university student so I don't know what will we do for a living, it's really scary that my only concerns lately have been gaming (I bought a ps3 and a bunch of games recently)  and uni and now maybe I will be facing the challenge to get a job, finish uni+ working, life can change drastically at any time, I was planning to blog about inFamous great ending and my experience so far with Killzone 2 (I wanted to experience the multiplayer before Killzone 3 arrives) and now I'm blogging about my dad having cancer.

The Multiplayer syndrome

The unpolished tacked on crap

You know what, I'm fucking tired of developers feeling the need to add some unpolished boring multiplayer mode to every single game that is released these days, wasting their limited budget on making a mode that will only last a few weeks or even days!, just to get an extra 0.5 Metacritic score, if you are not completely sure you have the material and the manpower to deliver a compelling and lasting multiplayer experience then just get over it, focus on your 8 hour game and don't be ashamed of it.

AND The milking

Really? Another COD? Bobby Kotick you little...
Really? Another COD? Bobby Kotick you little...

The other side of the coin of this industry syndrome is releasing a lot of sequels of popular multiplayer games, we were happy with Modern Warfare 1 for example, then we appreciated the "improvements" of MW2, do we need another modern fps iteration of the Call of Duty franchise?. The other case is the Halo franchise, Halo 3, Halo ODST firefight and Halo Reach, can you say that Reach will be the Halo definitive multiplayer experience of this generation?, please Microsoft don't be stupid and wait till you release your next console it happens.

Now let's talk about things done the right way, take note Bobby Kotick.

The commitment

A good example of support is what Zipper has been doing with MAG, adding a bunch of features and tweaking the game till the point that the experience is very different and improved from the original (I hope they don't come up tomorrow with the announcement of MAG 2.. ha!, that would be funny), trying to keep it fresh so this multiplayer-only game does not suffer a quick death. Leaving the Zipper example aside, the unquestionable kings are Valve and Blizzard, Valve with the awesome additions to games like Team Fortress and the Source engine long cycle that keeps defining how a game engine should be made and evolve, Blizzard with Stacraft 1 and Diablo 2 patches that kept coming out even after 10 years, yeah, unbelievable.

The Culture founders

Yeap, we played it for 12 years
Yeap, we played it for 12 years
You can say when a game was a masterpiece if even after 5 or 10 years people keep playing it, remembering the time when it was released, arranging some obscure LAN parties just to play and talk about the game, telling stories about epic matches and moments with them. That is the difference between Starcraft and Counter Strike and the horrible future I predict to the COD franchise, we really appreciate NOW the "improvements" of the anual iterations but the magical and the cultural iconic games are only the ones that one day that you thought was going to be just another day, you visit your favorite gaming site and find out that the sequel was announced, yes!, after so many years!, you can't even imagine how the graphics would be like, your head start going bananas, the hardware is now 1000 faster, you can even see yourself as a kid playing the first iteration of that franchise and now as a grown up  you are going to buy that game day one and you will feel younger again.

The naive hope

Let me buy one of these things and use it for like... forever?, please?
Let me buy one of these things and use it for like... forever?, please?
I really hope Reach, Bad Company 2, Killzone 3 and MAG (this applies to Starcraft 2 and Rock Band 3 too if you want) stay as this generation last iteration of every style of  multiplayer fps game, we don't need any more sequels, we need commitment and support,  cheap or even free map packs, new game modes and classes to keep it fresh. Devs have to build themselves a reputation so we can trust them and then finally announce a sequel to make us go nuts, they have to learn that Rome wasn't built in a day, just look at Valve, don't rush things, take your time, make us feel that our $60 dollar investment was worth it.

Ps3 batch 1

So after going through a batch of university exams I finally could give my new ps3 some use, starting with Heavenly Sword a game that everyone bashed when it was released but that I always wanted to play after watching the dev diaries and the trailers

Heavenly Sword

It is clear that most of the design choices concerning to level and gameplay were greatly influenced by Sony that wanted a AAA to show off the power of the ps3 and attract the graphics savvy gamers out there. The game tries to render a bazilion amount of enemies on screen (in the hundreds level) and give the m

otion capable sixaxis some use and I have to say that it succedeed in both things, the sixaxis use of this game is great and should be considered for future ps3 exclusives, the best example is shaking the controller when you are knocked down and you are still on the air to perform an air recovery that ejects you towards the enemy that attacked you, giving a very fun sense of urgence if you are low in health and you want to optimize your movements to make it to the next checkpoint.

 Heavenly Butt

In general, combat is pretty much God of War-esque and I really like the momentum you gain with your movements, you really feel that Nariko is waving a heavy sword and that she also has some weight, coming out of a quick spin with your chains and the performing a heavy attack with the big version of the sword is not the same as performing the latter alone.
Speaking about the story, the game starts at the very end of your journey and then the whole game is based on flashbacks about how Nariko ended up in that situation. There are some plot holes but that in my opinion gives you the clue that Ninja Theory wanted this IP to be huge and make several games out of it but they expected this one to sell a lot, I even remember the NT CEO on an interview saying that they had to sell more than 10 M to break even, and yes you remember the small install base of the ps3 during 2007 so this dudes were expecting every ps3 owner to buy their game.

Leaving aside the stupid goal they had imposed to themselves, the game sold pretty well and making a sequel would be a great decision specially now that the console has a huge user base compared to three years ago, they could even put the first game in the same BD of the new one, a strategy that Level-5 will implement with White Knight Chronicles, give that BD crazy space some use! and also realize that reusing your in-house ps3 engine has no cost!, just make that sequel!

Resistance 2 Multiplayer

 Ugly dude, ugly rendered
 Ugly dude, ugly rendered
The thing is that I got this game even without owning the first one just because it was a bargain and I said "well, Resistance 1 multiplayer must be dead by now, let's try R2's" and Oh god, this game mp is a disaster, graphics are horrible, weapons just don't feel right, there is no sense of weight and power on them and they also look like if they were designed by some ten year old kid. Quick scoping and making headshots is crazy, unbalanced and overpowered, add 60 dudes in the same map and you have created the worst multiplayer experience I have had in my life, spawning and blowing up 5 dudes head like if they were nothing and then being killed 5 times in a row 5 seconds after you have respawned, that gives you an idea of how messed up this game is. The coop mode is better but it still uses the same crappy weapons and everything so you can't expect much from it.
I can't say nothing about the singleplayer because I still have to get the first one, I really want to give this IP and Insomniac the benefit of the doubt  taking into account that I have already played Resistance Retribution on the psp and that  Resistance 3 screens are looking good, with a good art direction twist.

What can be said about t his game after almost 3 years, best new ip opener ever, amazing graphics but most of all, amazing character animations and physics, they succeeded at making you feel that you are interacting with the objects, clipping is non existent, I don't really know how they do it, th ey are wizards! and I'm so hyped because I know that Uncharted 2 is like this one x2. I will be buying Uncharted 2 GOTY edition in a few weeks, the idea of not owning the black label original version of the game is killing me but 35 bucks of DLC is too much to refuse.

InFamous

I'm currently playing this one, I'm very impressed so far but it seems that it will run out of steam before the end, I already have the powers and my trophy/achievement whoerism is making me do things that are really hurting my experience like collecting some stupid audiologs and trying to max out every power even without really needing them, Cole is already overpowered.

To finish this blog I must state that my gaming heart is going bananas, I only had a gaming capable PC in 2008 and now I own every single console but the Wii, there are so many good games that I have to finish and so many important university stuff to do!! and I want to get Vanquish and Eslaved a lot but I have to stay with the plan and beat old ps3 games first.

Thank you for reading this non-native English speaker mess, see you around

The returning to the source

So yesterday I bought a 250GB PS3 Slim, taking advantage of the price cut this and the 120gb had due to the new SKUs that came to replace them recently (160gb and the 320gb Move bundle). I have to say that I'm impressed with the quality of the product, the unit appears to be pretty solid and manufactured with the finest materials, something that his eldest brother the 360 Elite can't claim of itself. First time I'm using a Dualshock controller in my hands since I stopped using my old ps2 fat circa 2003-2004 (when I went crazy with mmorpgs), the first feeling was 'Thanks Microsoft for introducing your gamepad', yes the Dualshock 3 is not as comfortable as the 360 gamepad.

 Ps3, 360, DSL, PSP3000, Tifa Lockheart and a mess

The day before I bought the console I got 3 used games just to be ready and test it, as you can see they are MGS4, Ninja Gaiden Sigma and LAIR, I only wanted MGS4 but when I was chatting with the dude to arrange when and where to pick it up he ask me if I wanted the other 2 games for a little more cash, I jumped in cause NG Sigma and LAIR where games that I was eventually going to buy.
But not all is rosy, I'm having some HDMI audio problems, the sound is cutting every 10-15 second for a fraction of a second, I sent an email to the retailer and he said that it is probably caused by a low quality HDMI cable, what might be true because I bought a cheap one (It's the same cable that I've been using with the 360 since February) and when I remove the cable it is very very hot on the ps3 end, that is probably causing some thermic noise, to solve this I will be getting a high quality 1.4v cat 2 cable today.

I'm still trying to figure out if I need PSPlus or not, as a late PS3 user all the discounts and free stuff could be very useful, I never got into Xbox Live because I believe that paying to play using p2p is just crazy, running matchmaking servers cost is almost non-existent and buying games on demand is something that I will never do, I like to have physical copies of my beloved games.
To sum up I'm very happy with my purchase and I regret not jumping earlier into what seems to be the best system this generation so far, cutting edge technology (It does everything???), free online and REAL exclusives, yes, games that can only be played using this platform, unlike the 360/PC usual exclusives

Edit: I just received the high quality HDMI cable and it solved the audio problem!

DOW 2 Beta Impressions

It´s been some time since I post something, I played a lot The WItcher:EE but then I left it because I wanted to cut this video game addiction to star thinking about studying a bit for the finals that are at the gates but then this Beta was out and I HAD to play it.
I was a big DoW fan, I played a lot of DoW , DoW:Winter Assault and DoW: Dark Crusade and missed SoulStorm because the two races that were introduced were not as interesting to me as the rest, but yeah I loved them and I must say that Relic has done a lot of good things to the RTS genre adding some cool mechanics instead of the regular base building and resource gathering type of RTS, that's the reason why I didn´t bother to get Red Alert 3 despite Gemma Atkinson, the british sexual entity was part of the actors crew.
A lot of ideas and hilarious things were going on in my head when I imagined a sequel to this franchised a thousands of times like perhaps a whole new engine and some new mechanics from Relic, bigger armies and more eye candy was like a must in my head since I constantly remembered watching a lot of great replays in which the battles went crazy with unexpected come backs and hectic combat.
This time Relic took the easy path, grab the new mechanics implemented on Company of Heroes and throw them over the table and cover them with the already 3 year old Essense Engine, which keeps being pretty cool but it just does not sound and look enough to the sequel of a popular 2004 game which already has 3 expansions and a crazy race count.

Well, let´s make a more deep look at this Beta which is in fact the version that went gold with some features locked, like private custom games and of course, the campaign mode.

Races and balance

The game features 4 playable races, Space Marines, Orks, Eldar and Tyranids. The last of them was a popular request to the first game, but Relic was not sure to bring that Race with the old engine because of the unit count, which is in fact the most annoying thing about this sequel, every Squad has now fewer units and the Tyranids seems to have 50% more units that every Race in DoW 1 had, so if you were expecting an increase on scale, that is a huge dissapointment including that you are going to wonder "Couldn´t they just add the Tyranid race to the old game??, their excuse was crap".
You can choose from 3 Heroes from each race and everyone will unlock some race powers that can be activated after raising some kind of meter which goes up after killing dudes, also the Heroes manage in a WC3-esque way, with skills and gear that you can buy depending on the Tier you are and they also can level up. This Hero thing is a good improvement since the first one but it also means that they have removed the diversity of units you can spawn, for example with the space marines  now you can have a Force Commander, an Apothecary or a Techmarine selected, but in the old game you could also have the chaplain and the Librarian. Writing about unit diversity, there are fewer units for every race than the previous game and there is also less options to enhance your squads than before
The balance seems OK, but there are crazy overpowered skills or units here and there, that are ridiculous, like the Eldar guardians plasma grenades, that can wipe out an entire squad of another Tier 1 unit (and they are very cheap too), although that is counter with another ridiculous things about others Races that may appear in Tier 2 and 3, having advantage over the rest at the early game is not fair and you will see why.

Gameplay mechanics

Take the WC3 hero, the cover, retreat, suppression systems of CoH, the strategic point based resource gathering from CoH/ DoW and the paper/rock/sicssors infantry-stationary guns-tank thing of CoH too, add 0 building managing and you have this game, its like an obvious decition to grab the "best" of their own franchises and maybe rip of the hero thing from blizzard and the no building thing from World in Conflict and hope this game will be better than DOW 1, great mistake, that´s reminds me of the new Spyro the Dragon which now has some Krato´s fighting style, please Devs, stop stealing features of popular games thinking that they will automatically make yours better.
First of all, when you are playing, you will have fun like the first 5 hours of MP online gaming till you discover that everyone including you have found the optimal way to play each race-hero option, it's like it is FIXED, there is no option here, an strategy is the best and is unique, the order of the strategic points you are going to take, the first units you are going to spawn, the gear you are going to buy and the exact moment you are going Tier 2, and yes 2, because most of the matches don´t even go to Tier 3 because of the new Victory Point Control CoH-esque way of playing.
There are 3 Victory Points that you have to capture in order to reduce the points of your enemy, if you have all of them you will win faster, if you have 2 and them one, slower, and if you have the same both will remain where they are till someone claims another point. This way of playing encourages you to go and fight all the time, which is good, but it does not let you choose the quantity of initial points like CoH did, here there are 500 and you will wish you could choose 750 and 1000 or more.
The mode is fun but it´s cursed that whoever wins the first skirmishes and take advantage, there is little and no hope for the other team to come back. You screw it before the 5 minutes of a match and you know that you are doomed, there are some exceptions with some people making miracles and coming back but they rely on the mistakes that the "defenders" of the territory could make, if the other team/player is good, he will not let you come back despite how well you are trying, so the only thing you can do is watch your victory points go down quickly.

Graphics

The game is powered with an improved Essense Engine (the CoH engine) and I could max out the settings with my 9600 gt which is not a high-end video card so if you have a better card or even SLI/CrossFire I assume that you can play this game with some crazy resolutions without any framerate drop. The models are good, could have more poly count but it´s still an eye candy game. The big problem relies on the tiny map -squad direction Relic went with this game and the physics are not as good as in CoH, basicly because the maps are so small that there is no thing to be blown up or crushed properly in them, a few buildings to garrison your units and some things you can use to cover.

Misc

You have to use Live to play online and it works pretty well, lag is users problems, people trying to play with shitty ISP or shitty PCs but you can call an election to kick them of the match if they are ruining your game.
There are 5 maps I think, 3 for 3vs3 and 2 for head to head ( i have only played 2 head to head matches so maybe there is another one), Relic says they will let you download new ones a week or two after the game is launched
Several bugs are present but they may dissappear with an obvious patch the first week after releasing (remember that this beta was already the final code when it went gold)

Conclusion

I am not going to lie, this game is good but is not as good as DoW/CoH fans were expecting ( if you go the community forums where the beta is discussed, you will see that there is a lot of people that thinks the same), if you have not played any of those games or only CoH, then maybe it will blow your socks off anyway but later if you get the Relic Pack on Steam and play the original, you are going to see that the franchise was dumbed down a lot and that it`s not as good as a sequel of a 5 year old game should be (in terms of improvement), but well, let's hope they release some tools and add more maps with patches, perhaps when more races are introduced (with the typical Relic expansions)  then the diversity will make it the game you were looking for. Go download the beta and see if you like it, it´s free now on Steam till it launches late this month.

The full gaming has started

Tomorrow I will end my university year, and what a great year, no doubt the best since I started studing, I made a great group of friends, had some pretty interesting classes, played a few but great games, upgraded my pc and bought a laptop, a Logitech mouse and a Dell LCD screen, it was great in every way.

Well as I said i was playing Gears of War and CoH:OF, I finished the Gears campaign on hardcore 3 days ago, it was fun but as a I said before a big dissapointment, my expectations were high because of all the Xbox hype around that time-exclusive game (The first one, 2 we all know it´s only on the 360). The CoH expansion was great, in every way, great campaigns and a great addition to the MP, with new ways of gameplay in the form of the rush based Panzer Elite and the defense-based british army. What a pain in the ass are the british in MP, with the howies and the priest firing free long range artillery but I admit it encourage players not to turtle and play the game as it was thought, taking strategic points and moving your forces around the map trying to cut the enemies supplies.

I started playing Devil May Cry 4 pc edition and I am not having a lot of fun, but well I will have to beat the game I have already started it XD, I want to finish it fast so i will be buying the MS wireless 360/PC gamepad, that will also be useful when I finally buy a 360 (I was waiting for the Jasper model to come out), it will also be good to play assassins creed and some Neo Geo emulated games (yeah I now it is bad, but I don´t want to spend money on 15 year old games).

Well, merry christmas and happy new year, my month of full gaming has started and I have a lot of games in my wishlist, Fallout 3, The Witcher, CoD:WaW and more. I promise I will be writing some user reviews.

A bit worried about CoH:Tales of Valor

As I said in my las blog post, I am just playing 2007 Company of Heroes standalone expansion, Opposing Fronts, it turned out to be what a CoH fun expected, more gaming mechanics, more factions, great campaigns. Today when I was making my daily run of websites to read some news, previews, reviews, etc, I read GS hands - on of the second standalone expansion pack of this great game, great and NOT BROKEN game.

New features revealed:

3 Mini campaigns,
Direct Aiming mechanic: An fps view of your unit to shoot
New units for all factions

First of all, we were all expecting russians as the new allied faction and maybe Italians or something like that as the Axis, I know, they may be trying to keep that western front feeling of the game and they have always based the franchise on keeping it real and not inventing, and watching a russian army defending ardenes in MP, would destroy that feeling, but come on DIRECT AIMING, if I want to shoot a gun or drive a tank then I just play some ww2 fps like a call of duty or something, I don't expect that kind of experience while I am enjoying the best RTS franchise out there (believe me, it is).

The other thing is that new units for all factions, how is this going to be implemented?, as you may remember in the other Relic RTS, WH40k:Dawn of War + Expansions , each of them were standalone and you could access only the factions of the ones you got on MP, but you could still fight against a faction that you didn't own (after a huge patch every time an exp was released). Now you will have new units for the 4 available armies in CoH + CoH:OF, if someone owns the new Tales of Valor, it may have some kind of gaming advantage over those which can't in fact build that new units???, that is a complete and horrible mistake.

Well, the 3 mini campaigns, they could be good but a sp campaign has no replayable value, RTS games are meant to last in time with  their compelling and fun MP, yeah I enjoyed a lot the original Normandy campaign and the OF axis one that i am playing right now is very well done too, but this as I said, it's an RTS, you get what you paid when you kick some asses over the net or side by side in a lan party with your friends (yeah, we keep doing those, we are old i know ).

Opposing Fronts Hands - On

After like 400mb of ingame updates, I started with the Axis campaign, defending their ass during Operation Market Garden, I like the fact that they kept that real feeling about the original game, with the characters speaking german during the cutscenes, I would like the gameplay speeches to be real german too, but well, I think that THQ were very brave to release a game in which you play as Nazis during a battle which was won indeed, defending from the allies assault during market garden was their very last victory.
Graphically I feel there is some improvement but it could be the fact that I played the original one in my old 17'' CRT monitor. What was really improved was physics, during the first Mission you have to defend your Flaks 88 and Flak guns, and since the mission started you are destroying enemy aircraft which dinamically destroy the ground and may even damage your base and your units, the damage on the ground is really really cool.
The cutscenes have the typical conversation of Nazi Germany, throwing phrases about german race superiority and things like that, I liked that, this games showes the truth and does not try to be the game that suites every kind of people, an Axis Campaign and this dialogues could be offensive to people which was invaded by Germany or people which indeed likes Nazis and don't want that kind of things being shown, but no matter who is offended, history is history and i think THQ doesn't dissapoint, it seems to be a great expansion for the 2006 goty game.
I will post something else when I finish both campaigns (the other is from the British side, liberating Caen) and play some MP.
