Hold the Dark:

An incoherent excuse for sadism. There are some solid film fundamentals in the cinematography and the performances were good, but it's one of those movies where the director has mistaken "whispered statements full of meaning" for "normal human conversation".

1/5 wolves (which actually barely have anything to do with the movie despite the synopsis)

@babychoochoo: You are definitely asked to make choices without all the facts, and when those facts come to light (often immediately after you make the choice) sometimes the outcome doesn't go well for you. In the second game, the rewards/penalties are mostly non-critical things like items or food or your team's battle set up, but in the first game, side characters live or die because of it.

This is kind of the same conversation as Inception, right? My position on Inception was always that while, yes, the facts support two possible endings, only one of them has any kind of narrative merit. The appeal of the "it's all still a dream" ending is in the fact it gives you uncertainty, but digging any deeper, many of the movie's most dramatic moments become pointless.

I would probably have kept playing those Batman games until the end of time, even if I was mostly indifferent to their other franchises.

I was angry with myself when I finished Ni No Kuni. That's the only one of those games I played.

I'm not saying this to be a jerk: Your review lacks a clear thesis statement. I read probably half of your post looking for the point you were trying to make and gave up when I couldn't find it, skipping to the end. "Pensive and less urgent" could be interpreted as "Contemplative", but of course, this game is much too stupid to be contemplative. I'd recommend stronger language to more clearly direct the reader, and less time describing what happens and more time evaluating it. It's clear from the last paragraph that you did find most of the things you were describing in the game to be negative, but it wasn't before then.

Basically the only old console games I go back to are Mass Effect, so no.

I'm sure people would be less annoyed about the fee if they felt they'd gotten their money's worth so far.

Ashley isn't one of my favorite Mass Effect characters, but I do really like her. Know who my favorite ME character is? Zaeed, who likes to bet on dog fights and wants to let a factory full of innocents die so he can get revenge. So I guess maybe having a moral disagreement with a character doesn't make them a less interesting character to me, and it's weird to me that other people don't work that way.

I was a huge fan of Onimusha 2, kept playing the series after that point but it never quite hit the spot like that again.
