@jayspadez: Nah, Steam's usually good. It's just that GOG and Gamersgate do some great promotions too - people should check 'em all out occasionally. PCGamer.com makes it easy, since they usually have a feature called "Weekend Game Deals" every friday. Gamersgate seems to get a ton of games that aren't released in our territory too, which is weird, but there are some gems. Like a PC version of Sega's Billy Hatcher - I didn't even know Sega ever made that for PC until I went to Gamersgate.

Btw, so you missed the deal on Giana Sisters over at GOG. I don't want to sound like a commercial for the site or nothing, but let me point you to a current, rather insane, deal they got going on concerning their library of Interplay games. Pay what you want, get 8 games. Pay above the Average, get 20 games. Pay $35, get 32 games. It's really, really insane, and it's going on for 8 more days. GOG does stuff like this occasionally, and their prices are excellent regardless. Plus, DRM free! And they're the only place you can get some versions of classic games that play on modern OS'.

Okay, I'm seriously sounding like a commercial for 'em now, so I'm gonna stop :)

Giana Sisters is awesome so far though - staying on topic!

So, are they talking about re-releasing Doom 3? Or patching BFG Edition to improve the version on disc? Personally, I'd just like to see them patch BFG Edition so that you can play with old "Flashlight OR Gun" combo - I appreciate that they wanted to address the complaints leveled against Doom 3 at the time, but I was never one of the complainers. I also don't think BFG Edition is a deal breaker, but it's silly that you can't choose how you want to play Doom 3. Patrick brings up a good point about Vanilla Doom 3 being moddable, but I'm talking about the PS3 version here - I'm a console gamer. Still, id should work to make this whole situation, on PC and consoles, more ideal. I mean, it's not like Doom 3 is a new game. Maybe they should've axed, "The Lost Mission" entirely and focus on delivering the best version of Doom 3 possible...

I played it. Pre-ordered on GOG to save a few bucks. My laptop is pretty old - I got it in 2007 - but after some tweaking with the settings, it ran fine. It's actually weird because there are no options in the game; you have to mess with Settings outside of it, before actually starting the game. But whatever, minor annoyance. Runs fine now - that's the point. Which is great, because it's pretty awesome. It's a really, really solid platformer; it almost feels as good as an actual 2D one. The visual style is awesome, and the dual world switching adds an "Ikaruga" element to the action. It actually gets intense pretty quickly - I sort of miss the slowdown my laptop was having with it initially :) You have to switch worlds pretty quickly to get through obstacles and to take advantage of the right girl (because one can do a hover/twirl jump, and the other can do a fire attack that also lets her bounce off walls). The soundtrack too is fantastic; compositions by the legendary Chris Hulsbeck (just like the original game!), done in Chiptune AND covered by some punk band. Sounds amazing.

Giantbomb Quick Look'd the Giana Sisters DS game. I'm sure they'll Quick Look this one too so you can get a look at it Funzzo. But it's still only $11 something on GOG if you want to buy it. I recommend it.

Can you guys start Quick Looking some GOG titles? There are many shows that look back at classic console games - Continue, Replay, even Giantbomb tried it with those Game Room Quick Looks and that Time Trotters thing -, but no one seems to look at the classic PC games that GOG is trying to keep relevant. Modern mainstream games suck and lack ambition. Looking back at what the PC was doing in the 90's and 80's would be interesting as shit. Stuff like Outcast was trying to do things Mass Effect doesn't even do. And it would certainly be a shock to the kiddies to see adventure games - that's right 12 year olds; they used to make games where the main point WASN'T to murder thousands of faceless, personality-free tools.

How the fuck did Second Life generate $75 million in 2011? Who the fuck plays Second Life besides weirdos? And there's nothing they moved onto since it came out? It looks like shit, like Everquest 1. How are those weirdos still playing Second Life?

I can't even read the rest of the article yet. That information is staggering. I need a minute here, Patrick...

EDIT: Okay, read on. Patterns looks legitimately interesting. It's no GameGlobe, but it looks interesting in it's own right. Don't agree with this statement though, Pat: "It all reminded me of LittleBigPlanet, except not restricted to a platform directed at hardcore players.". Sackboy and friends are Sony's most Nintendo-like IP; they attract all audiences. The editor maybe hardcore, but the LBP games are for everyone.

So, are the rights for KoA: Reckoning up for sale now? Because, c'mon - it's not like Rhode Island will ever make a sequel. I'd like to see someone snap that up. Perhaps Ubi Soft; they don't have a big RPG franchise, although they do possess Might & Magic.

That's all I care about. I wonder if anyone will purchase the rights to Kingdoms of Amalur and, maybe, the work done on Copernicus. If someone is looking to get into the MMO Space, a 60% complete one has got to seem attractive...

@Patrick Klepek said:

who genuinely enjoyed the last Medal of Honor, flaws ‘n all. With the last one, at least there was a genuine attempt to try something different.

Anyone else have as huge a problem with statements like this as I do? Patrick's such a punk sometimes - you can tell that, as a gamer, he grew up on the Xbox1 and has no concept of innovation. I mean, shit, the FPS' of the late 90's were genuinely creative. There was an arms race between studios like Monolith, id, Epic, 3D Realms and Lucasarts seeing who could outdo each other. Both in terms of technology (3D engines, AI) and game design; it was never going to be enough to merely rip off the Lightning Gun from Quake, Epic needed to make something way better (the Redeemer in Unreal).

Not ONE of these military innovates AT ALL. There is NOTHING different - they're all following the template from the first Call of Duty. The level designs are not identical, but besides that, what exactly is "something different" to you? Because they're all covering the same territory. They all take place in the same settings - generic bombed out city 1, generic bombed out city 2, generic dusty middle eastern country, etc. They all feature the same western soldiers. They all feature the exact same guns AND enemies (do you like you generic terrorists in Afghani or Russian flavors?), AND vehicles. And the same stage designs (hooray! A turret sequence AND a sniper stage! INNOVATIVE!).

So do you think it tried something different because you have a very narrow idea of what first person shooters are, Patrick? Or because Gamestop or someone did a PR-approved interview with EA and the tools working on Medal of Honor TOLD YOU they're making something different? Either way, you're wrong.

Kotaku put up a live blog. They announced some other games, but nothing interesting. A lot of variations on Monster Hunter games... even a new Gundam for Vita that's some sort of hunting game. Where you battle Gundams of different scales? That's... the saddest thing in the world, to be honest.

They didn't bring Final Fantasy XIII 3. No actual Monster Hunter (guess that's sticking to Nintendo consoles for the time being). No Ground Zeroes or Metal Gear Rising. No God of War, Sly Cooper 4, no Playstation All Stars.

Just a handful of Vita games. Still some PSP stuff. And the hardware announcements. So all they talked about was Soul Sacrifice, God Eater 2, a port of the 3DS Senran Kagura game (a more pervy game than Dead or Alive Xtreme even), a years-late port of the super disappointing Muramasa: The Demon's Blade (screw you critics. Just cuz it's different doesn't mean it's awesome. What a waste of money. There's NO level design there; just empty rooms and mindless one button combat), Valhalla Knights, and a Tecmo Koei game called Touikeden.

WTF Sony? The Vita is screwed. This was a sad way to start off TGS '12. Please be better, rest of show...

Super Creepy Pokemon Hack? Someone mentioned that - kotaku or joystiq, I wanna say - like 3 years ago. That's not exactly fresh or new. Lame. I look forward to hearing about new creepy gaming stuff now, thanks to stories about stuff like Slender and the SCP games. Going into Halloween, I hope you find more stuff that's surprising and fresh, Patrick. What are you going to link to next week? The Majora's Mask CreepyPasta, "Ben"? 'Cuz that's a few years old too.... I'm sure if someone hasn't heard it, you should probably make them aware of it. It's generally pretty excellent. It's just old.

Oh well, so the news stories are... old news. At least you came through with Steam Greenlight and Kickstarter stuff. Saw Papier suggested when I pledged twenty bucks to Project Eternity. I'll probably kick a few bucks their way too... but next month, when I have cash to spare. Good thing they have 26 days to go. They... they need a lot more than they have now.
